Mine is the same. At first I thought mine was faulty because of how loud it sounds at high speeds. That's the way it is. I have noticed that it's quieter when you take off the fabric pre-filter front, but then you can't use this model without that. I think it has to do with too much airflow resistance, not a tight enough seal around the filters, and a not strong enough motor.

It works well in smoke (campfire, burnt food, things of that type) so I would assume it works well with exhaust. Common city pollutants would depend on what it is. It has a carbon filter to remove smells if that is important to you.
