BEFORE FIRST USE
For best results, follow these steps before using your Slow Cooker for the rst time.
1. Remove all packaging materials from inside and outside the unit and check to ensure
that all parts are accounted for.
2. Read and remove any stickers on the unit except for rating label on the bottom, which
should remain on unit. Read all directions.
3. Wash the cooking insert and lid with warm, soapy water. Dry thoroughly. Wipe down
the interior and exterior of the base with a damp cloth. WARNING: Never immerse the
Slow Cooker base or its plug in water or any other liquid. The cooking insert and lid are
dishwasher safe. The Slow Cooker base is not dishwasher safe.
Slow Cooking
Slow cookers allow for true hands-off cooking. You can simply add ingredients to your
Slow Cooker, turn it on, and enjoy a ready-to-eat meal hours later.
1. Prepare your food for cooking. Place Slow Cooker on a at, sturdy surface near
an outlet. Be sure the cooking insert has been lowered into the base.
2. Add food to the cooking insert. (See General Cooking Tips, p. 10 for more information
on how to best arrange foods for optimum results.) NOTE: Do not ll insert less than
one-quarter full or more than three-quarters full.
3. Put lid on and plug in Slow Cooker.
4. Turn the temperature control knob to LOW or HIGH according to how long you want
your food to cook. For most foods, the results will be the same whether cooked on
HIGH or LOW; LOW just takes longer, so choose according to your schedule.
NOTE: WARM is not a cook function and should only be used for keeping already-
cooked foods warm.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

8
5. Cook for the amount of time specied in your recipe. Check foods for doneness
according to current food safety guidelines, then enjoy. If you would like to keep your
cooked food warm, turn the knob to the WARM setting. NOTE: If removing the insert
for serving, place it on a heatproof surface. CAUTION: Insert handles are hot. Use
potholders when handling insert.
6. When nished, turn the Slow Cooker off, unplug it, and let it cool completely
before cleaning.
Slow Cooking with Initial Sear
Though putting uncooked ingredients into the Slow Cooker is the easiest way to cook
with it, you can add more avor by searing foods—cooking them over high heat to
brown—rst. This step is especially benecial when cooking meat. Fortunately, the Slow
Cooker’s aluminum cooking insert is stovetop safe, which means there’s no need to dirty a
separate pan for searing.
1. Place cooking insert on a gas or electric stovetop burner. NOTE: The insert will not
heat on an induction stove. Heat the insert as desired or instructed in your recipe.
(This may include adding oil.)
2. Add your food to the insert on the stove. For best results, don’t crowd the pot
(brown in batches if necessary).
3. Brown food on one or all sides as instructed by your recipe. NOTE: Do not use metal
utensils to stir or mix as they can scratch the nish. Metal utensils may be used to
add food to or remove food from the insert.
4. Using potholders to hold the handles (they are hot!), carefully pour off any excess
grease, if necessary. (TIP: Do not clean away or discard any browned bits on the
bottom of your pot—they add avor to your dish. Simply add a little of the recipe’s
liquid and scrape them up to incorporate into the dish.)
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS

9
5. Once food is seared, carefully lower the insert into the Slow Cooker base, then add
any remaining ingredients as needed. NOTE: Do not ll insert less than one-quarter
full or more than three-quarters full.
6. Put lid on and plug in Slow Cooker.
7. Turn the temperature control knob to LOW or HIGH according to how long you want
your food to cook. For most foods, the results will be the same whether cooked
on HIGH or LOW; LOW just takes longer, so choose according to your schedule.
NOTE: WARM is not a cook function and should only be used for keeping already-
cooked foods warm.
8. Cook for the amount of time specied in your recipe. Check food for doneness
according to current food safety guidelines, then enjoy. If you would like to keep your
cooked food warm, turn the knob to the WARM setting. NOTE: If removing the insert
for serving, use potholders when handling insert and place it on a heatproof surface.
9. When nished, turn the Slow Cooker off, unplug it, and let it cool completely
before cleaning.

SLOW COOKING TIPS
General
• The important difference between HIGH and LOW settings is how long they take
to bring food to a simmer. Choose LOW when you want foods to cook all day
(for instance, during a work day); choose HIGH when you want foods to cook
in about 4 hours.
• To ensure onions, potatoes, and other root vegetables cook through at the same
rate as other ingredients, cut them into pieces no larger than 2 inches.
• To ensure thorough cooking, place potatoes, onions, and root vegetables at the
bottom and sides of the insert, and place meats on top of them.
• Ground meats should always be browned on the stovetop before slow cooking.
• Avoid lifting lid, except to add ingredients, as it allows heat to escape. Add 15 to 20
minutes to the cooking time each time the lid is lifted.
• If adding quick-cooking vegetables, such as green beans to a slow-cooked dish, add
them during the last 30 minutes of cooking to keep them from becoming too soft.
• If adding sh to a slow-cooked dish, add it during the last 15 to 30 minutes of cooking
to prevent overcooking it.
• Dried herbs and spices can be added at the beginning of cooking. Add fresh herbs
when cooking is completed.
• Thaw foods completely before adding to the Slow Cooker.
• Dried beans should be soaked overnight, drained, and rinsed before being cooked.
Make-Ahead
• Many slow-cooked dishes, like stews and braises, taste even better the day after they’re
made. Simply follow the recipe as written, cool completely, then refrigerate, covered,
in the cooking insert. The next day, remove any solidied fat on top of food, then put

11
SLOW COOKING TIPS
the insert in the base unit and reheat on LOW until simmering.
• Most recipes can be partially prepped the day before. Brown meats as instructed in
the recipe, then add the remaining ingredients. Cool, cover, and refrigerate overnight
in the cooking insert. The next day, put the cold insert in the unit base and cook as
directed, adding up to 30 minutes to your cooking time if necessary.
Adapting Recipes to Slow Cooking
• As a general rule, one hour of simmering on the stove or one hour of braising in
a 350˚F oven equals 4 hours of slow cooking on HIGH or 8 hours on LOW. If the
original recipe calls for more than 1 hour of simmering or braising, cook on LOW for
8 to 10 hours. Individual recipes may require some experimentation. Be sure any meat
is cooked through before serving.
• Because liquid doesn’t evaporate from a slow cooker the way it does a regular pot,
you’ll need to add less liquid for soups and stews. Add only enough liquid to cover
the other ingredients. If the soup or stew seems too thick at the end of cooking, add
additional liquid then.
• Dairy products (milk, sour cream, some cheeses) tend to break down and curdle
during slow cooking. Add these ingredients during the last 30 minutes of cooking or
substitute canned evaporated milk or nonfat dry milk.
• If adding pasta or rice to a slow-cooked dish, partially cook them rst in a pot of
boiling water until not quite tender. Then add them to the Slow Cooker for the last
30 minutes of cooking.

12
CLEANING AND MAINTENANCE
The beauty of slow cooking is that you wind up with just one pot to clean.
1. Unplug Slow Cooker and allow it to cool completely before cleaning. CAUTION:
Insert handles become very hot during cooking. If handling before the unit has
cooled, use potholders.
2. Never immerse base in water or other liquids. To clean the base and temperature
control knob, if necessary, wipe with a clean damp cloth.
3. The cooking insert and lid are top rack dishwasher-safe. They can also be washed by
hand in warm soapy water. The base is not dishwasher-safe.
4. If food residue sticks or burns onto cooking insert surface, remove it from base, ll
with warm soapy water, and let soak before cleaning. If scouring is necessary, use a
nylon scrubbing pad or brush with liquid detergent or a nonabrasive cleaner.
5. Be sure all parts are clean and dry before storing.
6. To store, place cooking insert inside the base and the lid over the insert. Never wrap
the cord tightly around the appliance; keep it loosely coiled.
7. Store the Slow Cooker in its box or in a clean, dry place.
