3 Description
The MyCareLink Home communicator is an
electronic device that transfers information between
your implanted heart device and the Medtronic
CareLink™ Network (an internet-based secure
server). The communicator allows your doctor to
manage your care remotely.
The communicator sends your heart device
information to the Medtronic CareLink Network
using a cellular phone network (by default) or
through your home Wi-Fi™* network (optional
setup)
1
. For instructions on how to connect the
communicator to your Wi-Fi network, see Chapter 6,
Connecting the communicator to your Wi-Fi
network, page 23.
3.1 How do I use the communicator?
By keeping the communicator plugged in and within
3 meters (10 feet) of where you sleep, transmissions
of your implanted heart device data will occur
automatically. Transmissions are automatically
available to your clinic.
If your clinician requests, you can send a
transmission manually. See Chapter 8, Sending a
manual transmission, page 32.

10 Additional information
10.1 Can I travel with the communicator?
If you plan to travel, talk to your doctor to determine
whether you should bring your communicator. The
communicator will work in most locations by using a
cellular connection. However, cellular service might
not be available in all locations.
If you plan to travel to an area where there might not
be reliable cellular reception, you can use a personal
Wi-Fi network. Check to see if the location has a
Wi-Fi network. The communicator does not work
with all Wi-Fi network types. It is set up to work with
most personal networks. To set up Wi-Fi when you
arrive, follow the steps in Chapter 6, Connecting the
communicator to your Wi-Fi network, page 23.
If you will be traveling by plane, you may refer to the

updates to stay current with any security or software
improvements. These updates are installed
automatically, and you do not have to take any
action.
Contact Medtronic if you have reason to suspect a
security incident with the communicator.
Maintain physical security of the communicator.
Lack of physical security puts the communicator at
risk.
The communicator software uses network ports to
send and receive data. Ports are both incoming and
outgoing.
When connecting the communicator to a Wi-Fi
network, follow these security measures:

13 Electromagnetic compatibility
declaration
Testing shows that the communicator protects
against electromagnetic interference that may
cause harm in a typical home healthcare
environment. There is no guarantee that
interference will not occur in a particular
environment. If the communicator causes harmful
interference to other devices or if it is negatively
impacted by other devices, try to correct the issue
using the following actions:
• Place the devices in new positions or locations.
• Increase the separation between the devices.
• Contact Medtronic for help.
If you experience performance issues with your
communicator, try using it at least 3 meters (10 feet)
away from a television, computer monitor or screen,
or wireless communications equipment such as
wireless home network devices, cordless
telephones and their base stations, or
‘walkie-talkies.’ Using your communicator near
these devices could interfere with communication
between your implanted heart device and the
communicator.
Note: "Harmful interference" is defined in 47 CFR
§2.1 by the FCC as follows: Interference which
endangers the functioning of a radio navigation

Interference may occur in the vicinity
of equipment marked with the following symbol:
Note: At 80 MHz and 800 MHz, the separation
distance for the higher frequency range applies.
Note: These guidelines may not apply in all situa-
tions. Electromagnetic propagation is affected by
absorption and reflection from structures, objects,
and people.
a
The ISM (industrial, scientific and medical) bands
between 150 kHz and 80 MHz are: 6.765 MHz to
6.795 MHz; 13.553 MHz to 13.567 MHz; 26.957 MHz
to 27.283 MHz; and 40.66 MHz to 40.70 MHz.
b
The compliance levels in the ISM frequency bands
between 150 kHz and 80 MHz and in the frequency
range 80 MHz to 2.7 GHz are intended to decrease the
likelihood that mobile/portable communications
equipment could cause interference if it is inadvertently
brought into patient areas. For this reason, an
additional factor of 10/3 is used in calculating the
recommended separation distance for transmitters in
these frequency ranges.
c
Field strengths from fixed transmitters, such as base
stations for radio (cellular/cordless) telephones and
land mobile radios, amateur radio, AM and FM radio
broadcast and TV broadcast cannot be predicted
theoretically with accuracy. To assess the

electromagnetic environment due to fixed RF
transmitters, an electromagnetic site survey should be
considered. If the measured field strength in the
location in which the communicator is used exceeds
the applicable RF compliance level above, the
communicator should be observed to verify normal
operation. If abnormal performance is observed,
additional measures may be necessary, such as
reorienting or relocating the communicator.
d
Over the frequency range 150 kHz to 80 MHz, field
strengths should be less than 6 V/m.
