FUEL GAS ODOR
LP gas and natural gas have man-made odorants added
specifically for detection of fuel gas leaks.
If a gas leak occurs you should be able to smell the fuel
gas. Since Propane (LP) is heavier than air you should smell
for the gas odor low to the floor. ANY GAS ODOR IS YOUR
SIGNAL TO GO INTO IMMEDIATE ACTION!
•Donottakeanyactionthatcouldignitethefuelgas.Donot
operateanyelectricalswitches.Donotpullanypowersupply
orextensioncords.Donotlightmatchesoranyothersource
offlame.Donotuseyourtelephone.
•Geteveryoneoutofthebuildingandawayfromthearea
immediately.
•Closeallpropane(LP)gastankorcylinderfuelsupplyvalves,
orthemainfuelsupplyvalvelocatedatthemeterifyouuse
naturalgas.
•Propane(LP)gasisheavierthanairandmaysettleinlow
areas.Whenyouhavereasontosuspectapropaneleak,keep
outofalllowareas.
•Useyourneighbor’sphoneandcallyourfuelgassupplierand
yourfiredepartment.Donotre-enterthebuildingorarea.
•Stayoutofthebuildingandawayfromtheareauntildeclared
safebythefirefightersandyourfuelgassupplier.
•FINALLY,letthefuelgasservicepersonandthefirefighters
checkforescapedgas.Havethemairoutthebuildingand
areabeforeyoureturn.Properlytrainedservicepeoplemust
repairanyleaks,checkforfurtherleakages,andthenrelight
theapplianceforyou.
ODOR FADING - NO ODOR DETECTED
•Somepeoplecannotsmellwell.Somepeoplecannotsmell
theodoroftheman-madechemicaladdedtopropane(LP)or
naturalgas.Youmustdetermineifyoucansmelltheodorant
inthesefuelgases.
•Learntorecognizetheodorofpropane(LP)gasandnatural
gas.Localpropane(LP)gasdealerswillbemorethanhappy
togiveyouascratchandsniffpamphlet.Useittobecome
familiarwiththefuelgasodor.
•Smokingcandecreaseyourabilitytosmell.Beingaround
anodorforaperiodoftimecanaffectyoursensitivityto
thatparticularodor.Odorspresentinanimalconfinement
buildingscanmaskfuelgasodor.
•The odorant in propane (LP) gas and natural gas is
colorless and the intensity of its odor can fade under
some circumstances.
•Ifthereisanundergroundleak,themovementofgasthrough
thesoilcanfiltertheodorant.
•Propane(LP)gasodormaydifferinintensityatdifferent
levels.SincePropane(LP)gasisheavierthanair,theremaybe
moreodoratlowerlevels.
• Always be sensitive to the slightest gas odor. Ifyou
continuetodetectanygasodor,nomatterhowsmall,treat
itasaseriousleak.Immediatelygointoactionasdiscussed
previously.
ATTENTION - CRITICAL POINTS TO
REMEMBER!
•Propane(LP)gashasadistinctiveodor.Learntorecognize
theseodors.(ReferenceFuelGasOdorandOdorFading
sectionstotheleftandabove).
•Evenifyouarenotpropertytrainedintheserviceandrepair
oftheheater,ALWAYSbeconsciouslyawareoftheodorsof
propane(LP)gasandnaturalgas.
•Ifyouhavenotbeenproperlytrainedinrepairandserviceof
propane(LP)gasthendonotattempttolightheater,perform
serviceorrepairs,ormakeanyadjustmentstotheheateron
thepropane(LP)gasfuelsystem.
•Aperiodicsnifftestaroundtheheaterorattheheater’s
joints;i.e.hose,connections,etc.,isagoodsafetypractice
underanyconditions.Ifyousmellevenasmallamountof
gas,CONTACTYOURFUELGASSUPPLIERIMMEDIATELY.DO
NOTWAIT!
