CLEANING DECK
Cleanundersideof the mowerdeckonce aseasonto preventbuild-up
of grassclippingsor otherdebris. Followstepsbelowfor thisjob.
1. Disconnectsparkplugwire.Draingasolinefromlawn moweror
placea pieceof plasticunderthegas cap.
2. Tip mowersothat it restson the housing,keepingthe mufflerside
down.Referto Figure14.Holdmowerfirmly.
Nevertip the mowermorethan 900inany directionanddo not leave
the mowertippedfor any lengthof time. Oilcandraininto the upper
partof the enginecausinga startingproblem.
3. Scrapeand cleanthe undersideof thedeckwitha suitabletool.
Donot spraywithwater.
IMPORTANT:Donot usea pressurewasheror gardenhoseto clean
yourunit.Thesemaycausedamageto bearings,or the engine.The
useof waterwill resultin shortenedlife and reduceserviceability.
4. Putthe mowerback on itswheelsonthe ground.Ifyou hadput
plasticunderthe gas capearlier,makesureto removeit now.
REPLACING REAR FLAP
To replacerearflap,proceedas follows:
1. To removerearflap, lift reardoor,removescrew,and pressflap in
oneither sideto removefromhole.SeeFigure16.
2. Removescrewandflapfromoppositeholeandreplacewithnew
flap inthe oppositeorderand mannerof removal.
BLADE CARE
When removingthe cutting bladefor sharpeningor replacement,
protectyour handswitha pair of heavyglovesor use a heavyragto
holdthe blade.
Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterfor cracks,especiallyif you
strikea foreignobject. Replacewhennecessary.Followthe steps
belowfor bladeservice.
1. Disconnectsparkplugbootfrom sparkplug.Turnmoweron its side
makingsurethatthe airfilterandthe carburetorarefacingup.
2. Removethe boltandthe bladebellsupportwhichholdthe blade
andthe bladeadapterto theengine crankshaft.See Figure17.
3. Removebladeandadapterfromthe crankshaft.
4. Removebladefromthe adapterfor testingbalance.Balancethe
bladeon a roundshaft screwdriverto check. Removemetalfrom
the heavyside untilit balancesevenly.Whensharpeningthe
blade,followthe originalangleof grind.Grindeachcuttingedge
equallyto keepthe bladebalanced.
Anunbalancedblade willcause excessivevibrationwhenrotatingat
highspeeds.It maycausedamageto mowerandcouldbreakcausing
personalinjury.
5. Lubricatethe enginecrankshaftand the innersurfaceof the blade
adapterwithlight oil. Slidethe bladeadapterontothe engine
crankshaft.Placethe bladeon theadaptersuchthatthe side of

the blademarked"Bottom"(or with part number)facestheground
whenthe moweris in the operatingposition.Makesurethatthe
bladeis alignedandseatedon thebladeadapterflanges.
6. Placeblade bell supporton theblade.Alignnotcheson the blade
bellsupportwithsmallholesin blade.
7. Replacehex boltand tightenhex boltto torque: 450 in. Ibs.rain.,
600 in. Ibs.max.
Toensuresafeoperationof yourmower,periodicallycheckthe blade
boltfor correcttorque.
BELT CARE
NOTE:Severalcomponentsmustbe removedin order to changethe
mower'sself-propulsiondrive belt.Seean authorizedSearsService
Centerto haveyourbelt replaced.
