Gettingto KnowYour
MicrowaveOven
This section discusses the concepts behind microwave cooking. It also shows you the basics you need to know
to operate your microwave oven. Please read this information before you use your oven.
HOW YOUR KENMORE ULTRA WAVE TM MICROWAVE
HOOD COMBINATION WORKS
Microwave energy isnot hot. Itcauses food to make
itsown heat, and it's this heat that cooks thefood.
Microwavesare likeTV waves, radiowaves, or
lightwaves. You cannot see them, but youcan see
what they do.
A magnetron in the microwave oven produces
microwaves.The microwaves move into theoven
where they contact food as it turns on theturntable.
Magnetron
_J
Conventional microwave ovens operate on HIGH
power only. To achieve a 70% power level in a
conventional microwave oven, the oven operates
70% of the time at HIGH power and 30% of the
time OFF.

Oven cavity
Metal floor Glass tray
The glass turntable ofyour microwave oven lets
microwavespass through. Then they bounce off a
metalfloor, back through the glass turntable, and
are absorbed bythe food.
Microwaves pass through most glass, paper, and
plasticswithout heatingthem sofood absorbs the
energy. Microwaves bounceoff metal containersso
food does not absorb theenergy.
ULTRA WAVE TM Inverter Microwave System
ULTRA WAVETM Inverter Microwave System gives
you better microwave cooking performance for
defrosting, cooking and reheating foods quickly
and uniformly.
The ULTRA WAVETM Inverter Microwave System
is proven technology that delivers a constant
stream of microwave power - true high, medium,

For the best cooking results
Always cook food for the shortest cooking time
recommended. Check to see how the food is
cooking.
Stir, turn over, or rearrange the food being
cooked about halfway through the cooking time
for all recipes. This will help make sure the food
is evenly cooked.
If you do not have acover for adish, use wax
paper, or microwave-approved paper towels or
plastic wrap. Remember to turn back a corner of
the plastic wrap to vent steam during cooking.
Radio interference
Using yourmicrowaveoven maycause interference
to yourradio,TV, or similarequipment.When thereis
interference,youcan reduceit or remove itby:
Cleaning thedoorand sealingsurfacesoftheoven.
Adjusting the receivingantennaof theradio or

for one minute. Ifthe dish gets hot,do not use it.
Some dishes (melamine, some ceramic
dinnerware, etc.)absorb microwave energy,
becoming toohot to handle and slowing cooking
times. Cooking in metal containers notdesigned for
microwave usecould damage the oven, as could
containerswith hidden metal (twist-ties,foil lining,
staples, metallicglaze or trim).
Operating safety precautions
Never lean on the door or allow a childto swing
on itwhen the door is open.
Use hot pads.Microwave energy does notheat
containers, but the heatfromthe food can make
the container hot.
Do not use newspaper or other printed paper in
the oven.
Do not dryflowers, fruit, herbs, wood, paper,
gourds, or clothes in the oven.
Do not starta microwave oven when it isempty.
Product lifemay be shortened. Ifyou practice
programming the oven, put a container of water in
the oven. It isnormal forthe oven door to look
wavy after the oven has been running for a while.
Do nottry to melt paraffin wax in theoven.
Paraffin wax will not melt in a microwave oven
because itallows microwaves to pass through it.
Do not operate themicrowave oven unless the
glass turntable is securely in place and can move
freely. The turntable can move in either direction.
Make sure the turntable is correct-side up in the
oven. Handle your turntable with carewhen
removing itfrom theovento avoidpossibly
breaking it. If yourturntable cracks or breaks,
contact your dealer for a replacement.
When you use abrowning dish, the browning
dish bottom must be at least3/16 inch above the
turntable. Follow thedirections suppliedwith the
browning dish.
Never cook or reheat awhole egg inside the
shell, Steam buildup in whole eggs may cause
them to burst, and possiblydamage the oven.
81ice hard-boiledeggs before heating. Inrare
cases, poached eggs have been knownto
explode. Cover poached eggsand allow a
standing time of one minute before cutting into
them.
For best results, stir any liquid several times
during heating or reheating. Liquidsheatedin
certain containers (especiallycontainers shaped
like cylinders) may become overheated. The liquid
may splash out with a loud noiseduring or after
heating or when adding ingredients (coffee
granules, tea bags,etc.). This can harmthe oven.
Microwaves may not reachthe center of a roast.
The heatspreads to the center from the outer,
cooked areasjust as in regular oven cooking. This
is one of the reasons for letting some foods (for
example, roasts or baked potatoes) stand for a
while after cooking, or for stirring some foods
during the cooking time.
Do not deep fry in the oven. Microwavable
utensils are not suitableand itis difficultto
maintain appropriate deep-frying temperatures.
Do not overcook potatoes. At the end of the
recommended cooking time, potatoesshould be
slightlyfirm because they will continue cooking
during standing time. After microwaving, let
potatoes stand for 5 minutes. They willfinish
cooking while standing.
Electrical connection
IIf your electric power line or outlet voltage is
less than 110 volts, cooking times may be longer. Have a qualified electrician check your electrical
system.

AUTO DEFROST
Four defrost sequences are preset in the oven.
The auto defrost feature provides you with the best
defrosting method for frozen foods. The cooking guide
will show you which defrost sequence is recommended
for the food you are defrosting. For added convenience,
the Auto Defrost includes a built-in beep mechanism
that reminds you to check, turn over, separate, or
rearrange to get best defrost results.

the DEFROST cycle. At this time, open the door and
turn, separate, or rearrange the food. Remove any
portions that have thawed. Return frozen portions to
the oven and touch START to resume the defrost cycle.
Operating Tips
For best results, remove fish, shellfish, meat, and
poultry from its original closed paper or plastic
package (wrapper). Otherwise, the wrap will hold
steam and juice close to the foods, which can cause
the outer surface of the foods to cook.
For best results, shape your ground meat into the
form of a doughnut before freezing. When defrosting,
scrape off thawed meat when the beep sounds and
continue defrosting.
Place foods in a shallow container or on a microwave
roasting rack to catch drippings.
Weight conversion table
You are probably usedto food weights as being in
pounds and ounces that are fractions of a pound (for
example, 4 ounces equals 1/4 pound). However, in
order to enter foodweight in Auto Defrost, you must
specify poundsand tenths of a pound.
Ifthe weight on thefood package is infractions of a

weight to decimals.

SURE SIMMER
Your microwave oven lets you simmer soups,
casseroles, stews, and other liquid foods. All you do
is set a simmer time and your oven will bring your
food to a boil and then simmer it for the time you
specify.

SENSOR COOKING
SENSOR OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
SensorCook allows you to cook most of yourfavorite
foods without selecting cooking times and power
levels.Theoven automatically determines required
cooking time for each food item. When the internal
sensor detects a certain amount of humiditycoming
from the food, itwill tellthe oven how much longer to
heat. The display will show the remainingheat time.
Forbest resultsby Sensor, following these
recommendations.
Foodcooked with thesensor systemshould be at
normal storage temperature.
Glass Tray and outside of container should be dry
to assure best cooking results.
Foodsshould always be covered loosely with
microwavable plasticwrap, waxed paper or a lid.
Donot openthe door or touch the "STOP/CLEAR"
key during the sensing time. When sensing time is
over, the oven beeps twiceand the remaining
cooking time will appear in thedisplay window. At
this timeyou can open the door tostir, turn, or
rearrange the food.
SENSOR COOKING GUIDE
Appropriate containersand coverings help assure
good Sensor cooking results.
Always use microwavable containers and cover
them with lidsor vented plasticwrap.
Never usetight-sealing plasticcovers. They can
prevent steam from escaping and cause food to
overcook.
Match the amountto the size of thecontainer.
Fillcontainers at least halffull for best results.
Besure the outside of the cooking container and
the insideof the microwave oven aredry before
placingfood in the oven. Beads of moistureturning
intosteam can mislead thesensor.

Caring for Your Microwave Oven
To make sure your microwave oven looksgood and workswell for a long time, you should
maintain it properly. Forproper care, pleasefollow these instructionscarefully.
For interior surfaces: Wash often with warm, sudsy
water and a spongeor
soft cloth. Use only mild,
nonabrasive soaps or a
milddetergent. Be sure
to keep the areas clean
where the door and
oven frame touch
when closed. Wipe well
with clean cloth.
Overtime, stainscan
occur on the surfaces as the result of food particles
spatteringduring cooking. This isnormal.
For stubborn soil, boil a cup of water inthe oven for 2
to 3 minutes. Steam will
soften the soil. To get rid
of odors insidethe oven,
boila cup ofwater with
some lemonjuice or
vinegar in it.
For exterior surfaces and control panel: Use a soft
cloth with spray glass
cleaner. Apply the spray
glass cleanerto the soft
cloth; do notspray
directly on the oven.
NOTE: Abrasive
cleansers, steel wool
pads, gritty wash
cloths, some paper
towels, etc., can
damage the control paneland the interiorand exterior
oven surfaces.
To clean grass tray and support, wash in mild,

To use of the metal rack:
The metal rack gives you extra space when cooking
in more thanone container at thesame time.
1. Place rack securely in the four plastic supports.
Rack must not touch metal walls or back of
microwave oven.
2. Place equal amounts of food both above and
below rack.
To avoid risk of property damage:
1.Do not cook with rack on floor ofthe oven.
2. Use the metal rackwhen cooking equal amounts
of foodat the same time.
3.Do notuse rack to pop popcorn.

MICROWAVE COOKING TIPS
Amount of food
Ifyou increaseor decrease the amountoffood
you prepare, the time it takes tocook thatfood will
also change. Forexample, if you double a recipe,
add a little more than halfthe original cooking time.
Checkfor doneness and, if necessary, add more
time in small increments.
Starting temperature of food
The lower the temperature ofthefood beingput
intothe microwave oven, the longer ittakes to cook.
Foodat room temperature will be re-heated more
quickly than food atrefrigerator temperature.
Composition of food
Food with a lot of fat and sugar will be heated
faster thanfood containing a lot ofwater. Fatand
sugar will also reacha higher temperaturethan
water in the cooking process.
The more dense the food, the longer it takesto
heat."Very dense" food like meat takes longer to
heatthan lighter, more porousfood likesponge
cakes.
Size and shape
Smaller pieces offood will cook faster than larger
pieces.Also, same-shaped pieces cook more
evenly thandifferent-shaped pieces.
With foods that have different thicknesses, the
thinner parts will cook faster thanthe thicker parts.
Place the thinner parts of chickenwings and legs in
the center of the dish.
Stirring, turning foods
Stirring and turning foods spreads heatquicklyto
the center of the dish andavoids overcooking at the
outer edges of thefood.
Covering food
Cover food to:
Reduce splattering
Shorten cooking times
Keep food moist
You can useany covering that lets microwaves pass
through. See "Gettingto Know Your Microwave
Oven" for materialsthat microwaveswill pass
through. Ifyou are usingthe Sensor function, be sure
to vent.
Releasing pressure infoods
Several foods (forexample:baked potatoes,
sausages, egg yolks, and some fruits)are tightly
covered bya skin or membrane. Steam can build up
under the membrane during cooking, causing the
food to burst. To relievethe pressure andto prevent
bursting, pierce these foods before cooking with a
fork, cocktail pick,or toothpick.
Using standing time
Always allow food to stand after cooking.
Standing time after defrosting and cooking allows
the temperature to evenly spread throughout the
food, improvingthe cooking results.
The length of the standing time depends on how
much food youare cooking and how dense itis.
Sometimes itcan be as shortas thetime ittakes
you to remove the food fromthe oven and take itto
the serving table. However, with larger, denser food,
the standing time may be as long as 10 minutes.
Arranging food
For best results, placefood evenly on the plate. You
can do this in severalways:
If you are cooking several items of the same
food, such as baked potatoes, place them in a ring
pattern for uniform cooking.
When cooking foods of uneven shapes or
thickness, such as chicken breasts, place the
smaller or thinnerarea ofthe food towards the
center of the dishwhere it will be heated last.
Layer thin slices of meat on top of each other.
When you cook or reheat whole fish, score the
skin - this prevents cracking.
Do not letfood or a container touch thetop or sides
of the oven. This will prevent possiblearcing.
Using aluminum foil
Metal containers should not be used in a microwave
oven. There are, however, some exceptions. If you
have purchased food which is prepackaged in an
aluminum foil container, referto the instructionson
the package.When using aluminum foilcontainers,
cooking times may be longer because microwaves
will only penetratethe top of thefood. If you use
aluminum containers without package instructions,
follow these guidelines:

MICROWAVE COOKING TIPS (CONT.)
Using aluminum foil (cont.)
Placethe container in a glass bowland add some
water so that itcovers the bottom of the container,
not morethan 1/4in. (.64cm) high.This ensures
even heatingof the container bottom.
Always remove the lid toavoid damage tothe
oven.
Use only undamaged containers.
Do not use containers taller than 3/4in. (1.9cm).
Container must be at least halffilled.
To avoid arcing, there must be a minimum 1/4in.
(.64cm) between the aluminum container and the
walls ofthe oven and also between two aluminum
containers.
Always place thecontainer on the turntable.
Shield with small pieces ofaluminum foil, parts of
food that may cook quickly, such aswing tips and
leg ends of poultry.
Heating food in aluminum foil containers usually
takes up to doublethe time compared to reheating
in plastic, glass, china, or paper containers.
The time when food is readywill vary depending
upon the type of container you use.
Let food stand for 2 to 3 minutes after heating so
that heat isspread evenly throughout container.
Cookingyou should not do inyour
microwaveoven
Do not do canning offoods inthe oven.Closed
glassjars may explode, resulting in damage to the
oven.
Do not use the microwave oven tosterilize objects
(baby bottles,etc.). It isdifficult to keepthe oven at
the high temperature needed for sterilization.
Removing the rack
When popping commercially packaged popcorn,
Remove the rack from the oven; Donot place
the bag of microwave popcornon the rack or under
the rack.
In the case of popping microwave popcornwith
rack, that cancause the fireor damage to your
microwave oven.
