CLEANING DECK
Cleanundersideof the mowerdeckonce a seasonto preventbuild-up
of grass clippingsor otherdebris. Followstepsbelowfor thisjob.
1. Runengineuntilit stopsfromlackof fuel.Disconnectsparkplug
wire.
2. Tip mowersothat it restson the housing,keepingthe mufflerside
down.Referbackto Figure17.Holdmowerfirmly.
Nevertip the mowermorethan 900inany directionanddo not leave
the mowertippedfor any lengthof time. Oilcandraininto the upper
partof the enginecausinga startingproblem.
3. Scrapeandcleantheundersideofthedeckwithasuitabletool.Donot
spraywithwater.
IMPORTANT:Donot usea pressurewasheror gardenhoseto clean
yourunit. These maycausedamageto bearings,orthe engine.The
useof waterwill resultin shortenedlife and reduceserviceability.
4. Putthe mowerbackon itswheelsonthe ground.

BLADE CARE
When removingthe cuttingblade for sharpeningor replacement,
protectyourhandswith a pair of heavyglovesor usea heavyragto
holdthe blade.
Periodicallyinspectthe bladeadapterfor cracks,especiallyif you
strikea foreignobject. Replacewhennecessary.Followthe steps
belowfor bladeservice.
1. Disconnectsparkplug bootfromsparkplug.Turnmoweronitsside
makingsurethat the airfilterandthe carburetorarefacingup.
2. Removetheboltandthebladebellsupportwhichholdthebladeand
the bladeadaptertothe enginecrankshaft.SeeFigure19.
3. Removebladeandadapterfrom the crankshaft.
4. Removebladefromtheadapterfortestingbalance.Balancetheblade
ona roundshaftscrewdriverto check.Removemetalfrom the
heavysideuntil it balancesevenly.Whensharpeningthe blade,
followthe originalangle of grind.Grindeachcuttingedge equally
to keepthe bladebalanced.
Anunbalancedbladewill causeexcessivevibrationwhenrotatingat
highspeeds.It may causedamageto mowerand couldbreakcausin(
personalinjury.
5. Lubricatetheenginecrankshaftandthe innersurfaceof the blade
adapterwith lightoil. Slidethe blade adapterontothe engine
crankshaft.Placethe bladeon the adaptersuchthatthe sideof
the blade marked"Bottom"(orwithpart number)facestheground
whenthe moweris in the operatingposition.Makesurethatthe
bladeis alignedand seatedon thebladeadapterflanges.See
Figure19inset.
6. Placebladebellsupportontheblade.Alignnotchesonthe bladebell
supportwithsmallholesin blade.
7. Replacehex boltandtightenhex boltto torque:450in. Ibs.rain.,
600 in. Ibs.max.
Toensuresafe operationof yourmower,periodicallycheckthe blade
boltfor correcttorque.
