Important Installation Guidelines - Portable Heaters
The installation of Portable gas heaters is restricted in some States of Australia. Restrictions sometimes include:
• Minimum room sizing (volume of room in cubic metres)
• Minimum ventilation requirements
• Limited to a certain gas type (Victoria LPG only)
• Maximum heater size 18 MJ’s on Natural Gas and 25 MJ’s on LPG (South Australia)
• Maximum 2.5ng/J NO

emissions (Victoria)
• Not permitted in new installations/homes (Victoria)
Some other key points that should be noted include:
• Portable gas heaters cannot be installed in bedrooms, bathrooms or hallways
• The gas hose & power cord cannot be positioned through a doorway into an adjoining room
• Portable heaters cannot be operated from an LPG gas cylinder in the same room
• It should be noted that minimum room sizing varies between thermostatically controlled Convectors and
manually controlled Radiant heaters
• All installation of bayonet points, room sizing & ventilation is to be in accordance with the Australian
Standard AS5601 – Gas Installations
