ENGINE MAINTENANCE
Spark Plug
Forgood performance,the sparkplugmustbe properlygappedand
freeof deposits.Replacethe spark plug annually.
1. Disconnectthe cap fromthe sparkplug,and removeanydirt from
the sparkplug area.
2. Usethe propersize sparkplug wrenchto removethe spark plug.

3. Checkthegapwitha wire gauge.See Figure13.Sparkpluggap
shouldbe 0.030in (0.76ram).If necessary,resetthe gap.
4. installandtightenthe sparkplugto the recommendedtorque(180
Ib-in[20 Nm]).
5. Attachthe sparkplugcapto thesparkplug.
Air Cleaner
A dirtyair cleanerwill restrictair flow to the carburetorand causepoor
engineperformance,inspectthe filtereachtime theengineis oper-
ated.Youwill needto cleanthe filtermorefrequentlyif youoperatethe
enginein verydusty areas.
Cleantheair cleanerevery25hoursof operationoronce a season.
Replacetheair cleanerannually.
Neverstartor runthe enginewith the aircleanerassemblyor theair
filterremoved.
NOTE:Do notuse pressurizedair or solventsto cleanthe filter.Pres-
surizedair can damagethefilterandsolventswill dissolvethefilter.
1. Removethescrew(A)fromthe top of the airfiltercover(B). See
Figure14.
2. Topreventdebrisfromfallingintothe carburetor,carefullyremove
the air filter cover.
3. Removethefoamelement(C)from the airfilter base.

4. Washthe foam elementin liquid detergentandwater.Squeeze
dry the foamelementin a cleancloth.
5. Saturatethe foamelementwithclean engineoil.To removethe
excessengineoil, squeezethe foamelementina cleancloth.
6. installthe foamelementinto theair filterbase.
7. installthe air filter coveronto theair filterbaseand securewith
screw.
