C. STARTER ROPE REPAIRAND REPLACEMENT
A Starter rope that breaks next to the pulley 6,
can be repaired.
Replace the starter rope if the rope breaks more 7
than 2-3 inches away from the pulley as the rope
will be too short to repair properly,

is undertension. If the spring pops out, it will
requireconslderabletime andeffort tOreinstall.
Forthisreason,youmaywant toletyourSears Ser-
vice Center handlethis repair.Ifyou do tryto repair
thestarter ropeandtherecoilspdng pops out,take
the unitto your SearsService Center.
Rei_ove the fourscrews on the side of the fan
housing. Figure38.
_CAUTION:J Do not mix chrome-colored fan
housingscrewswiththe black-coloredcylinder
shroud screws.Other than color, these screws
are similar in appearance; but if interchanged,
they can strip out andlor cause permanent
engine damage.
Remove the fanhousing.
Ifthe starterropeisbroken,proceedtostep'14"]fthe
starterropeisnotbroken, releasethe tensiononthe
spring asfollows:
a. Pult aboutt2 inches of rope from the pulleyand
catchtheropeinthenotchasshowninRgure38.
b. Tumthepulleycounterctockwise _ untilthe
spring tensionisreleased.
Unthread thepulleyscrewinthecenterofthe pulley
withaS/32" ai_enwrenchunti!the pulleyassembly
can be removedfrom the_anhousing.

counterclockwise_ . Removethe oldrope.

makesurethestarterdog, retainer,cam and wave
washer are positioned and installed properiyas
showninFigure39. Ifpar_ havebeencteaned,apply
a small amountofgreaseto bothsidesofthecam
andwavewasher.
Makesure thecam:isinstalled Onthestarterdogin
thedirectionshow_inFigure39.Alsomakesurethe
wavewasherissealedaround thetopouteredge of
the retainerand notcaughtbetween the top ofthe
retainerand thepulleyscrew.
Catchtheropeinthe notchinthepulley.Figure40,
"rum the pulley clockwise _ to wind up the
spdngu_t itwillturnnomorewithout forcing.Donct
/etgoofthepu/ley.Letthe pulleyunwindonefullturn
and releasetheropefrom theslot.Continuetohold
pulley.
Holdthepulley, pul! thestarterropetothefu!textent
oflengththenlettheroperewind s!owl_
Reinstallfan housingand thefour chmmecotored
screws.Tightenscrews securely.
