DFT Installation Instructions
Floor Installation
In accordance with recommended flooring installation practices, it is important that the sub-floor on
which the tile is set is suciently rigid It may be necessary to install an underlayment such as backer
board and/or mesh and mortar to achieve a solid application surface to ensure the floor is stable,
smooth and clean Tile experts typically require a 1-1/4" (32mm) thick sub-floor base for ceramic tile
Consult your local building department, tile dealer, the Tile Council of America or the Tile, Terrazzo and
Marble Association of Canada for methods and materials NOTE: If using metal mesh, always apply a
scratch coat prior to laying cables — as the metal mesh can be sharp enough to cut the heating cable
Warm Tiles cables are normally installed using a 3" spacing (3 tabs) between cable runs (Standard
Heating Cable Spacing) However, for rooms located above unheated areas or concrete slabs, the
recommended spacing is 3" – 2"– 3" – 2" (3-2-3-2 tabs), etc, between cable runs (Alternating Heating
Cable Spacing)
Before installing cable and strapping, ensure that all surfaces on which the Heating Cable will lie are free
of any sharp edges, debris or other restrictions that may cut or otherwise damage the heating cable
Carefully measure, locate and mark the mid-point of the Heated Area This will be a useful reference line
later, as it should coincide with the "half of cable marker" (Note Figure 6 below)

AREA

Plan the cable layout on the floor It may be helpful to outline the cable path on the sub-floor using a
suitable marker
The heating cable should be within 1-1/2" (38mm) of any vanity kick plate The Border Dimension
(outside walls, cabinets, etc) may vary between 1-1/2" to 6" (38mm to 150mm) depending on the cable
coverage range and the size of your room
To simplify mortar troweling later, consider installing cable runs parallel
to the longest wall in the room.
