My scanner is
connected but it will
not feed my document
or do anything else.
Your document is not set correctly. Insert your document until you feel the top edge of
the document touch the inside of your scanner.
Your document is too thin or too thick. Check that your document is acceptable
(see Document Information on page 5).
If your document is not the problem:
1. Confirm that the USB cable connecting your
scanner to your computer is connected correctly.
2. Re-install the scanner driver from Brother’s
installation DVD.
Paper dust has accumulated on the
surface of the rollers.
Clean the rollers every 5,000 scans.
See Clean the inside of your scanner on page 90.
Too many documents are loaded in the
ADF at a time.
Make sure your document is acceptable for the
machine. See Document Information on page 5.
There are foreign objects in the ADF. Remove any foreign objects or ripped paper from
the ADF.
A multi-feed occurs. Paper dust has accumulated on the
surface of the rollers.
Clean the rollers every 5,000 scans.
See Clean the inside of your scanner on page 90.
Too many documents are loaded in the
ADF at a time.
Load no more than 100 pages at a time.
See Document Information on page 5.
The document is sticky or has a sticky
note on it, which caused a multi-feed.
Use the Carrier Sheet to scan the multifed
document.
The document is
jammed.
Causes may vary. Open the scanner’s top cover and gently pull out
the document. Make sure that no paper remains in
the scanner.
Your document is not acceptable for the
machine (for example, if the paper is
too long).
Make sure your document is suitable for the
machine (see Document Information on page 5).
Use the Carrier Sheet (see Load documents
using the Carrier Sheet on page 13).

My scanner gets
warm.
It is normal for your scanner to emit a
small amount of heat after prolonged
use.
If there is a strange smell coming from the scanner
or the scanner feels hot to the touch, immediately
remove the power cord and USB cable from your
scanner. Contact Brother customer service or your
local Brother dealer. See For customer service on
page 121.
The scan quality is
poor.
Paper dust has accumulated inside
your scanner.
Clean your scanner (see Scanner Maintenance on
page 89).
The scanner resolution is too low. Increase the scanner resolution.
