Using the Touch Control Dial
Touching the Dial
A magnified image of the touch control dial displays on the LCD
monitor when you place your finger on the dial. Circling your finger on
the dial allows you to configure the functions assigned to each button.
Circling Your Finger on the Dial
You can select categories or images by circling your finger on the dial.
Circling counterclockwise works the same as the button and
circling clockwise the same as the button. (It may also work as the
/ buttons with some functions.)
• Functions that cannot be configured are shown in gray.
• The dial display (Touch Icons) can be turned On/Off in
the (Set up) menu (Advanced Guide p. 26).
• When Touch Icons is set to [Off], the icon of the function
being touched appears in green on the LCD monitor.

Indicators
The camera indicators light or blink under the following
circumstances.
Upper Indicator

Charging the Battery.
Charge the battery before use under the following circumstances.
• When using the battery for the first time.
• When the "Change the battery pack." message displays.
1. Insert the battery into the battery charger.
2. Plug the battery charger (CB-2LX) into a power outlet, or
attach the power cord to the battery charger (CB-2LXE) and
plug it into a power outlet.
• Battery charger model names and types vary by region.
Never do the following while an indicator is blinking green.
These actions may corrupt image data.
• Shake or jolt the camera
• Shut off the power, or open the memory card slot/battery
cover
Green: Ready to shoot (camera beeps twice)
Blinking Green: Time Lapse (movie) recording/Image recording/
reading/erasing/transferring (when connected to
a computer/printer)
Orange: Ready to shoot (flash on)
Blinking Orange: Ready to shoot (camera shake warning)
Yellow: Macro mode/infinity mode/AF lock mode
Blinking Yellow: Focusing difficulty (camera beeps once)

The charge indicator will light orange while the battery is
charging. It will change to green when the charge is complete.
Charging takes approximately 2 hours 5 minutes.

Installing the Battery.

Slide the memory card slot/battery cover and open it (

2. Push the battery lock in the direction of the arrow (c) and
insert the battery until it locks.
To remove the battery, push the battery lock in the direction of
the arrow (c) and hold it while pulling the battery out.
To protect the battery and prolong its life, do not charge it for
longer than 24 hours continuously.

Inserting the Memory Card.
1. Insert the memory card until it clicks into place.
2. Close the memory card slot/battery cover (
a, b).
To Remove the Memory Card
Use a finger to push the memory card in until you hear a click, then
release it.
Ensure that the memory card is correctly oriented before
inserting it in the camera. Inserting it backward may cause
the camera to fail to recognize the memory card or to
malfunction.

You can use SD memory cards, SDHC memory cards and
MultiMediaCards with this camera. These cards are collectively
called memory cards in this guide.

First Time Settings
Setting the Date/Time
1. Press the power button (a).
2. Use the or button to select an item and the or
button to change its value (
b).
To set the daylight saving option, select the icon and use the
or button to configure the setting.
3. Confirm that the correct time is displayed and press the
FUNC./SET button (
c).
The date and time can also be set in the Set up menu (p. 21).
Setting the Display Language
1. Turn the mode dial to (playback).
2. Hold down the FUNC./SET button and press the MENU
button.
3. Use the ,
, or button to select a language and
press the FUNC./SET button.
The display language can also be set in the Set up menu (p. 21).
• A rechargeable lithium battery is built into the camera
to save such settings as the date/time. This battery
charges when the main battery is in the camera. When
you purchase the camera, place the main battery in it
for approximately four hours or use AC Adapter Kit
ACK-DC30 (sold separately) to charge the lithium bat-
tery. It will charge even if the camera is turned off.
• The date/time settings may be lost after approximately
three weeks if you remove the main battery. Reset the
date/time settings if this occurs.

Press the power button.
The start-up sound will play and the
start-up image will display in the LCD
monitor.
• Pressing the power button again turns
the power off.
• To switch to the setting that mutes all
sounds (except for the warning sound),
press and hold the DISP. button while
pressing the power button.
2.
Turn the mode dial to (Auto).
3.
Aim the camera at the subject.
4.
Focus and shoot.
1. Press the shutter button halfway to
focus.
When the camera focuses, it beeps
twice and the indicator lights green
(orange when the flash fires). In
addition, a green AF frame appears in
the LCD monitor on the portion of the
image used to set the focus.

shoot.
The shutter sound will play and the
image will record. The indicator will
blink green while the image is
recorded to the memory card.
Reviewing an Image Right After Shooting
After a shot is taken, the image appears in the LCD monitor for
approximately 2 seconds.
You can continue to display images regardless of the review duration
setting with the following procedures.
• Keeping the shutter button pressed after a shot.
• Pressing the FUNC./SET or DISP. button while the image is dis-
played in the LCD monitor.
To stop displaying the image, press the shutter button halfway.
Selecting a Shooting Mode

Turn the mode dial to the desired mode (a).

Shooting Modes
AUTO
Auto
The camera automatically selects settings.
MANUAL
Manual
Allows you to select settings yourself, such as the exposure compensation, white
balance, my colors or ISO speed.
Digital Macro
Allows you to shoot when the distance from the lens (at
maximum wide angle) to the subject is within 2 – 50 cm (0.8
in. – 1.6 ft.). The subject can be shown larger than in
standard macro mode because the camera trims the image
edges and zooms in with the digital zoom.
Color Accent
Use this option to
have only the color
specified in the LCD
monitor remain and to
transform all others to
black and white.
Color
Swap
Use this option to
transform a color
specified in the
LCD monitor into
another.
Stitch Assist
Allows you to shoot overlapping images that can later be
merged (stitched) to create one panoramic image on a
computer.
SPECIAL
SCENE
Portrait
Produces a soft effect
when photographing
people.
Night
Snapshot
Allows you to take
snapshots of
people against
twilight or night backgrounds by
reducing the effects of camera shake
even without using a tripod.

[ Color Accent] for recording all colors in black and white except for the
selected color; [ Color Swap] for recording a selected color as a different color;
and [ Time Lapse] for shooting one frame at a time at a set interval.
• The shutter speed is slow in mode. Always use a tripod
to avoid camera shake.
• In , , , , , , or mode, the ISO
speed may increase and cause noise in the image depend-
ing on the scene being shot.
• In mode, shoot with the subject 1 m (3.3 ft.) or more
from the end of the lens.
• To shoot underwater, install the camera in Waterproof
Case WP-DC15 (sold separately).
• We recommend you use Waterproof Case WP-DC15 for
shooting at ski resorts or beaches.

Using the Zoom

The zoom can be adjusted from 35 – 140 mm (focal length) in
35mm film equivalent terms.

Shooting Close-Ups/Infinity Shots

• You can also use the touch control dial to make a selection.

display (Normal).
Macro
Use this mode to shoot close-ups of flowers or small items.
Image Area at Minimum Focusing Distance from End of Lens to Subject
• Maximum wide angle setting: 30 × 22 mm (1.2 × 0.9 in.)
Minimum focusing distance: 2 cm (0.8 in.)
• Maximum telephoto setting: 110 × 82 mm (4.3 × 3.2 in.)
Minimum focusing distance: 40 cm (1.3 ft.)
Infinity
Use this mode to record subjects 3 m (9.8 ft.) or more from the end of
the lens.
• Use the LCD monitor to compose close-ups in macro mode
since images composed with the viewfinder may be off-
center.
• When using the internal flash in macro mode, there is a pos-
sibility that images will not be of the optimum brightness.
The option cannot be set in (Auto) mode.

Using the Self-Timer

• You can also use the touch control dial to make a selection.
• When the shutter button is pressed fully, the self-timer will
activate and the self-timer lamp will blink (when using red-eye
reduction, it will stay lit for the last 2 seconds).
• You can change the delay time and number of shots with the
option (p. 17).
To Cancel: press the button and use the or button to

Changing the Delay Time and Number of Shots ( )

In the (Rec) menu, select [Self-
timer] and press the FUNC./SET
button.

Use the or button to select
[Delay] or [Shots] and the or
button to change the setting and
press the FUNC./SET button.

If the [Shots] option is set to 2 or more shots, the following
occurs.
• The exposure and white balance are locked at the set-
tings selected for the first shot.
• If the flash is used, the interval between shots lengthens
because the flash must charge.
• The interval between shots lengthens when the built-in
memory of the camera fills.
• Shooting will automatically cease if the memory card
becomes full.

Turn the mode dial to (playback) (a).
The last recorded image will display. Or if you have played back
images, the last image viewed will display (Resume Playback).
If the memory card has been switched, or the images on the
memory card have been edited with a computer, the newest image
on the memory card appears.
2.
Use the or button to display the image you wish to
view (b).
• Use the button to move to the previous image and the
button to move to the next image. Holding the button down
advances the images more rapidly, but shows them less clearly.
• Circling your fingertip to the left or right
on the touch control dial selects an
image.

as the print settings, date/time and sounds are set using the FUNC.

Convenient settings for shooting, playback or printing can be set with
these menus.

Preparing to Download Images
Items to Prepare
• Camera and computer
• Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk supplied with the camera
• Interface cable supplied with the camera
1.
Install the software.
1. Place the Canon Digital Camera Solution Disk in the
computer's CD-ROM drive.
2. Click [Easy Installation].
Follow the onscreen messages to
proceed with the installation.
3. When the installation is finished, the
[Restart] or [Finish] button appears.
Click the one that appears.
4. Remove the CD-ROM from the drive
when your normal desktop screen
appears.
Double-click the in the CD-ROM
window. When the installer panel appears,
click [Install]. Follow the onscreen
instructions to proceed.
Ensure that you install the software first before connecting the
camera to the computer.

Connecting the camera to a computer.
1. Connect the supplied interface cable to the computer's USB
port and to the camera's DIGITAL terminal.
Lift up the left edge of the camera's DIGITAL terminal cover with
a fingernail and plug the interface cable in all the way.
2. Turn the camera's mode dial to
(playback) and turn on the power.
The camera and computer will be able
to communicate.
Always grasp the sides of the connector when
disconnecting the interface cable from the camera's
DIGITAL terminal.

If the Digital Signature Not Found window appears,
click [Yes]. The USB driver will automatically finish installing
onto the computer when you attach the camera and open a
connection.

Downloading Images to a Computer
A window allowing you to set the preferences will appear when a
connection is established between the camera and computer.
1.
Select [Canon CameraWindow]
and click [OK] (first time only).
2.
Download the images.
• Download the images using the camera or the computer.
• By default, the downloaded images are saved into the [Pictures]
or [My Pictures] folder.
Thumbnails (small versions) of the
downloaded images will display in the
ZoomBrowser EX Main Window. By
default, the downloaded images are
saved into subfolders according to their
shooting dates.
If the window to the right does not
appear, click the [Start] menu and
select [All Programs] or
[Programs], followed by [Canon
Utilities], [CameraWindow],
[PowerShot - IXY - IXUS - DV 6]
and [CameraWindow].

The following window will appear when you establish a connection
between the camera and computer.
If it fails to appear, click the [Canon
CameraWindow] icon on the Dock (the bar which appears at the bottom
of the desktop).

Download the images.
• Download the images using the camera or the computer.
• By default, the downloaded images are saved into the [Pictures]
folder.

Downloading Images Using the Camera
(Direct Transfer)
Use this method to download images using camera operations.
Install the supplied software and adjust the computer settings before
using this method for the first time (p. 26).
1.
Confirm that the Direct Transfer
menu is displayed on the camera's
LCD monitor.
• The button will light blue.
• Press the MENU button if the Direct
Transfer menu fails to appear.

2.
Select , or and press the
button.
• The images will download. The
button will blink blue while downloading
is in progress. The display will return to
the Direct Transfer menu when the
download is complete.
• To cancel the download, press the FUNC./SET button.
All Images
Transfers and saves all images to the computer.
New Images
Transfers and saves to the computer only the
images that have not been previously
transferred.
DPOF Trans.
Images
Transfers and saves to the computer only the
images with DPOF Transfer Order settings
(Advanced Guide, p. 111).
Select & Transfer
Transfers and saves single images to the
computer as you view and select them.
Wallpaper
Transfers and saves single images to the
computer as you view and select them. The
transferred images display as the background
on the computer desktop.

Select or and press the button (or the
FUNC./SET button).

Select images to download and press the button
(or the FUNC./SET button).
• The images will download. The
button will blink blue while downloading
is in progress.
• Images can also be selected during
index playback (Advanced Guide p. 81).
• Press the MENU button to return to the
Direct Transfer menu.
Only JPEG images can be downloaded as wallpaper for a
computer. On the Windows platform, the files are
automatically created as BMP images.
The option selected with the button is retained even
when the camera's power is turned off.
The previous setting will be in effect the next time the Direct
Transfer menu is displayed. The image selection screen will
appear directly when the [Select & Transfer] or the
[Wallpaper] option was last selected.

touch the flash portion of the camera if it has been damaged.
• Stop operating the equipment immediately if it emits smoke or nox-
ious fumes.
• Do not handle the power cord if your hands are wet.
• Use only recommended batteries and accessories.
• The battery charger and compact power adapter are designed for
exclusive use with your camera. Do not use it with other products or
batteries.
Caution
• Do not sit with the camera in a back pocket as it may cause the
camera to malfunction or damage the LCD monitor.
