#1 Does this versatile Canon PowerShot have a landscape mode, or a way to set aperture for landscapes, wide depth of field?

Yes. The camera does have a setting for landscape shots for wide angles.

#2 Has anyone gotten past the notorious lens error?

I have never seen a lens error message.
