Max thickness is at 2.25 in. It can go as thin as 0 but I wouldn't go thinner than 3/4 in. I have a 3/4 in particle board desk that I sandwhich between two 3/4 wood for strength. The clamps can leave dents also.

I am measuring the pole at 1.56" outer diameter just above the rectangular base plate. If I recall correctly, the pole is fixed to the rectangular base. I hope that helps.

Weight should be OK. As to the height raised above the desk top: it depends partly on the size and dimensions of your specific monitor. If you look at the back of your monitor, where the mounting plate attaches, there are four screw holes; measuring from the center of those (as though connecting them with an "X") the height above desk top is 17" max. Subtract (from 17") the distance from that point to the bottom of your monitor, and you have the clearance to the desk top.
