Introduction to your Touareg

Driver Controls

1. Cruise Control

To activate, pull the stalk toward you. Braking or pushing the stalk away will cancel cruise control.

2. Climate Control

The Climatronic® heating and cooling system works automatically to heat or cool the vehicle cabin and regulate airflow and fan speed as needed.

3. Phone Button

Displays the Phone main menu or accepts and ends phone calls.

4. Voice Recognition (Microphone Button)

Pressing the Voice Recognition button activates the Voice Recognition function, allowing you to make Bluetooth phone and navigation commands.

5. Windshield Wiper Stalk

Windshield wiper function allows for rain-sensing wiper, low speed, continuous wipe operation, and high-speed continuous wipe operation. Also controls the rear wiper and the front and rear windshield washer functions.

6. Navigation Hard Key

Navigation main menu allows you to Enter an address, locate an Intersection, review Previous Destinations, access your Address Book, find a Point of Interest, or select your Home address.

7. Driver Information Display

When the ignition is switched on, you can display trip computer information and control a variety of vehicle functions using the multifunction steering wheel.

8. Steering Wheel Left Side Controls

Microphone Button - Activates Bluetooth® Voice Recognition or mutes the radio.

Phone Button - Displays the Phone main menu or accepts and ends phone calls.

Increase or Decrease - Volume settings for radio, navigation system notifications or phone calls.

Arrow Buttons - Can be used to change radio stations, scroll through radio presets, or select the next or previous media track.

9. Steering Wheel Right Side Controls

The buttons on the right side of the multifunction steering wheel are used to access functions in the instrument cluster:

OK Button - Used to select settings for features in the instrument cluster display.

Menu Buttons - Used to move up and down through the instrument cluster menus.

Up/Down Arrow Buttons - Navigate inside a specific menu.

Back Arrow - Return to previous selection.

Enter a Destination

Press the NAV hard key.
Press Destination on the touchscreen.
Press New dest. on the touchscreen.
Press Address on the touchscreen.
Press City/zip on the touchscreen. The keypad will appear. Enter the city or zip code, and press OK.
Press Enter Street on the touchscreen, use the keypad to enter the name of the street and press OK. Then follow the same steps with Enter House Number on the touchscreen.
Press Start Route Guidance on the touchscreen to display the route.

Change the route settings

Press the SETUP hard key.
Press Navigation on the touchscreen.
Enable 3 alternative routes by selecting the option on the touchscreen.

The alternative routes will be displayed after entering a destination.

NOTE: You can change the route settings before or after entering the address.

Optional RNS 850 Touchscreen Navigation

SiriusXM Traffic updates with incident coverage of most major roadways nationwide and provides alerts on major accidents, construction, and road closings. If a traffic problem affecting the route is reported during route guidance, an alternative route is calculated if the navigation system determines it would save you time.

To receive traffic reports: Press the microphone button on the steering wheel and after the prompt say, "Read Traffic Reports." Press the NAV hard key to stop the RNS 850 from reading the traffic reports.

Memory Seats

Saving Seat Position to Memory

Turn the ignition ON and adjust the driver seat and mirror position to your preferred positions.
Press and release the SET button.
Press and hold memory button 1, 2, or 3 until the chime sounds.
Test by changing the seat position and then press and hold the memory button to move the seat to the save position.

NOTE: If the ignition is ON or the driver’s door is closed, you will have to press and hold the desired memory button until the stored position is reached

Key Fob Profile - Activation

In order to save seat settings to a remote, the remote has to be activated.

Press and hold any of the memory buttons (1, 2, or 3) until the seat stops.
While holding the memory button, press unlock on the key fob until you hear a chime.
The key fob is now activated.

NOTE: This process only needs to be completed once per remote

Assigning Driver's Seat Position to a Remote

The seat position assigned to a remote is different than the memory seat function. When activated, each key fob remembers the last known seat position upon vehicle locking. If the seat is adjusted after this process in any way, the last known position is erased, and the seat reverts back to a default position.

Unlock and start the vehicle with an activated remote. Make sure the second remote is at least 20 feet away to prevent signal crossing.
Adjust the seat and mirrors to your desired position, or use memory button if programmed.
Turn the ignition OFF, exit the vehicle and close the driver's door.
Lock the vehicle with the activated remote. Seating position, including mirrors and lumbar, is now assigned to this remote.

Important Safety Instructions and Warnings: Memory Seats

Improper use of seat adjustment controls can cause severe personal injuries.
Always sit properly at all times before starting to drive and while the vehicle is moving. Make sure all passengers, especially children, are properly seated whenever the vehicle is moving.

Important Safety Instructions and Warnings: Key Fob

20 mm button cells and other lithium batteries will cause serious personal injury and even death within a short time if swallowed.
Always keep remote control vehicle key fobs with batteries, spare batteries, as well as dead button cells and larger 20 mm batteries out of the reach of children.
Get medical attention immediately if you suspect that a battery has been swallowed.
Improper use of remote control vehicle keys can result in serious personal injury.
Always take the key with you when you leave the vehicle. It can be used to start the engine and operate vehicle systems, such as the power windows, leading to serious personal injury. Children or other unauthorized persons could also lock the doors and the luggage compartment.
Never leave children, disabled persons, or anyone who cannot help themselves in the vehicle. The doors can be locked with the remote control vehicle key. This could result in people being trapped in the vehicle in an emergency. For example, depending on the time of year, people trapped in the vehicle can be exposed to very high or very low temperatures.
Heat build-up in the passenger and luggage compartment of a parked vehicle can result in temperatures in the vehicle that are much higher than the outside temperatures, particularly in summer. Temperatures can quickly reach levels that can cause unconsciousness and death, particularly to small children.
Never remove the key from the ignition switch while the vehicle is moving or rolling to a stop. The steering wheel will lock and you will not be able to steer or control the vehicle.

Cruise Control

Activate

Pull the cruise control stalk toward you (ON position). The speedometer icon will appear in the multifunction display.

Set Cruising Speed

1. When you get to your cruising speed, press the SET button at the end of the stalk.

Your speed will appear next to the speedometer icon.
The green CRUISE light will appear in the instrument cluster.

2. To increase/decrease your speed to the nearest increment of 5 mph, tap the stalk up or down.

3. To increase your speed by 1 mph, pull the stalk toward you (RESUME position). To decrease your speed by 1 mph, tap the SET button.

Cancel and Resume

To cancel cruise speed, press the brake pedal or slightly push the stalk away from you. The CRUISE light will go off.
To resume, pull the stalk toward you. You'll resume cruising at your saved speed.

The speedometer icon and your set speed will appear in the bottom margin of the multifunction display. The icon and set speed will become more prominent when cruise control is activated. Your speed will remain in memory until you turn off either the cruise control or your Touareg.

Optional Adaptive Cruise Control

Helps maintain a safe distance between you and vehicles in front of you, eliminating the need to reset your cruise control after braking. When you approach a slower-moving vehicle in front of you, ACC will automatically slow down to that vehicle’s speed and maintain a safe distance. When the vehicle is no longer present, ACC will accelerate back to the stored speed.

There are four preset distance settings that can be adjusted using the distance switch on top of the stalk. The default is distance three and will reset to that each time you turn on the ignition

NOTE: Available on select trim lines.

Important Safety Instructions and Warnings: Cruise Control

Using the cruise control when it is not possible to drive safely at a constant speed can be dangerous and can lead to an accident and serious personal injury.
Never use cruise control when driving in heavy or varying traffic or when you cannot keep a safe distance between you and the vehicles ahead of you.
Never use cruise control on steep, winding, or slippery roads (such gravel roads, wet roads, or snowy or icy roads) or on roads with standing water.
Never use cruise control when driving off-road or on unpaved roads.
Always adjust your speed and the distance you keep between you and the vehicles ahead of you to the road, traffic, weather, and visibility conditions.
To help prevent unintended operation of cruise control, switch the system off when it is not being used.
It is dangerous to use the resume feature when the previously set speed is too high for the existing road, traffic or weather conditions.
When traveling downhill, the cruise control may not be able to maintain a constant speed. The vehicle will speed up because of its own weight. Downshift and/or use the foot brake to slow the vehicle.
Failure to heed warning lights and instrument cluster text messages can cause the vehicle to break down in traffic and result in a collision and serious personal injury.
Never ignore warning lights or text WARNINGS.
Always stop the vehicle as soon as it is safe to do so.

Voice Recognition

Phone

Answer an incoming call

The Bluetooth system will interrupt your vehicle's stereo with a ringtone. Press the phone button on the multifunction steering wheel to answer the call.

End a call

Briefly press the phone button on the multifunction steering wheel

Call by name

Press the microphone button on the multifunction steering wheel
After the chime say, "Call", followed by the name of the person you want to call. For example, "Call Mike Brown."

The system will answer, "Calling Mike Brown."

Voice Recognition tips

The name must be said exactly as it is stored in the directory. If the name is not recognized, ensure you are saying it as it is stored in directory.
If multiple numbers are stored per name, you may use the shortcut "Call Mike Brown at work", or the system may ask you to choose (e.g., work, mobile, home, etc.).
If at any time during Voice Recognition you wish to cancel a request, simply press the microphone button on the multifunction steering wheel.

Help

Press the microphone button on the multifunction steering wheel.
Say, "Help", then follow the prompts.
You can say, "Help" after any prompt for the system to give you available options. This will take you to further options (e.g., read phone book, call history or settings).
To end prompts, press the microphone button again.

RNS 850 Touchscreen Navigation

Enter a Destination (Voice Command)

Press the microphone button on the steering wheel and listen for the chime.
Say, "Enter destination."
After the chime, say the entire address beginning with the street number and ending with the state; be sure to say the street number as single digits.
After entering the address, say, "Yes" to start route guidance.

NOTE: At any point when entering an address, you can say, “Start route guidance.” If a mistake or correction has been made in the process of entering the address, simply say, “Correction” to re-enter the information.

Important Safety Instructions and Warnings: Bluetooth® Pairing

Accidents and injuries can occur if the driver is distracted. Speaking on or using a phone while driving can distract the driver from traffic.
Select the volume settings so that the acoustic signals from the outside are still audible (e.g., the sirens of emergency rescue vehicles). Obey all applicable legal requirements.
In areas without mobile network coverage or with poor mobile network coverage, as well as in some tunnels, garages and subways, phone conversations may be interrupted, and it may be impossible to make phone calls - even emergency calls.
In some countries and/or certain mobile networks, emergency calls may only be supported when the mobile phone is connected to a mobile phone package that has a SIM card that is “blocked” and/or has sufficient calling credit on it and adequate network coverage.
A mobile phone on the seat, instrument panel or in other places can be thrown around the inside of the vehicle during a sudden braking maneuver, crash or other accident and cause injury to vehicle occupants.
Never place or mount a mobile phone on doors, the windshield, on or near the area on the steering wheel marked “AIRBAG”, the instrument panel, the seat backrests or the areas between these points and the driver/passengers. Mobile phones can lead to serious injuries in cases of accidents, especially when the airbags are inflated.
Always switch off your mobile phone at gas stations or wherever there is a fire or explosion hazard. The electromagnetic radiation can cause sparks that can ignite fuel vapors and cause a fire
The mobile phone will automatically connect to the mobile network when the Bluetooth connection to the mobile phone package is disconnected.
Using a radio device in the vehicle without a connection to an external antenna might exceed electromagnetic radiation thresholds. This also applies if the outside antenna is not installed property.
Always keep the cell phone antenna at least 8 inches (20 cm) away from pacemakers. Heart specialists advise that cell phones cam adversely affect the way pacemakers work.
Never carry a mobile phone that is switched on in the breast pocket directly over a pacemaker.
If you suspect there may be interference with a pacemaker or other medical device, switch the mobile phone off immediately.
The center armrest can interfere with the driver's elbow movement and thus cause accidents and severe injuries.
Always keep the armrest closed while driving.

Bluetooth®

Pairing

Pairing your phone with the RNS 850

First, check your phone's compatibility at www.vw.com/bluetooth.
Start the ignition and turn on the radio.
Press the SETUP hard key on the RNS 850. Press Bluetooth on the touchscreen.
Select "Search for all Bluetooth Devices" and select your phone from the Found Bluetooth device list (ensure your Bluetooth is made visible on your mobile device).
Select "Flands Free Function." The multifunction display will then show a PIN.1
Make sure the same PIN is displayed on your phone and press OK on the steering wheel. Then press Pair on your phone.”

Pairing your phone with the RCD 550

1. First, check your phone's compatibility at www.vw.com/bluetooth.

2. Start the ignition and turn on the radio.

3. From the Bluetooth menu on your phone, search for new devices and select VW Phone.

4. A connection request will appear on the multifunction display. Press OK on the steering wheel.

The multifunction display will then show a PIN.1

5. Make sure the same PIN is displayed on your phone and press OK on the steering wheel. Then press Pair on your phone.”

♦Some phones may require entering a four-digit PIN (0000) to complete the pairing process.

**You must enter the PIN on your phone within 30 seconds of entering the PIN on the touchscreen; otherwise, the pairing process will restart.

Wireless Audio Streaming

RNS 850 Bluetooth Audio: Initial Setup

1. First, you'll need to activate your vehicle's Bluetooth audio function. You'll only go through these steps the first time you stream audio.

Make sure your device is paired with your vehicle's Bluetooth system.

2. Press the SETUP hard key.

3. Press Bluetooth on the touchscreen.

4. Press Bluetooth settings on the touchscreen.

5. Tap Bluetooth audio (A2DP) on the touchscreen and make sure the box is checked.

6. Scroll down and tap Bluetooth device list on the touchscreen.

7. Select the name of your connected device on the touchscreen.

8. Press Audio player on the touchscreen.

Streaming Bluetooth Audio: RNS 850/RCD 550 (RNS 850: Complete Initial Setup first)

Press the MEDIA hard key.
Press Source on the touchscreen, followed by BT Audio on the touchscreen.

Driving on today's roads demands the full attention of the driver at all times
Driver distraction causes accidents, collisions and serious personal injury
Never let yourself be distracted when setting, adjusting, or using the infotainment System, when using your mobile phone, or when operating the mobile phone controls.
Always drive attentively and responsibly. Use the Infotainment System, your mobile phone, and the mobile phone controls only if road, traffic, and weather conditions permit and you will not be distracted from your driving.
If you cannot use the Infotainment System, your mobile phone, or the mobile phone controls safety while driving, wait until later or find a safe spot where you can pull off the road and park the vehicle.
Always set sound volume levels so that you can clearly hear horns, sirens and other warning sounds outside the vehicle.
Setting the sound volume too high may damage your hearing. This applies even if you are exposed to high volumes for short periods only.
The volume level may suddenly change when you switch media source or connect a new audio source.
Always lower the base volume before switching media source or connecting a new audio source.
Driving recommendations and traffic symbols displayed by the navigation system may differ from the current traffic situation.
Traffic signs and traffic regulations have priority over the recommendations and displays provided by the navigation system.
Always adjust your speed and driving style to road, traffic, weather and visibility conditions.
External devices that are loose in the vehicle or not properly secured could be thrown around the interior and cause injuries during a sudden driving or braking maneuver or in a crash.
Never put or attach an external device on a door, on the windshield or above or near to the areas marked “AIRBAG” on the steering wheel, the instrument panel and the seat backrests, or between these areas and the vehicle occupants.
External devices could cause serious injury in an accident, especially when the airbags inflate.
Connecting cables of external devices may obstruct visibility through the windshield or other windows.
Route cables so as not to interfere with the driver.
Opening a CD or DVD player's housing can lead to injuries from invisible laser radiation.
Always have CD or DVD players repaired only by a qualified workshop.

Rear Hatch

Easy Open Hatch

Hands Free Hatch Release

You must be carrying your vehicle key (e.g., in your pocket, hand or purse).
The ignition must be off and any key removed from the ignition.
Quickly move your foot and shin as close to the bumper as possible. Your shin must be in the upper part of the sensor's range and your foot in the lower part.
Quickly move your shin out of range. The rear hatch opens automatically.

There are three additional ways to open the power rear hatch automatically.

Option 1

With the ignition off, press and hold the rear hatch button on the key fob for at least one second.

Option 2

Push the switch on the driver’s door.

Option 3

Press the micro-switch located above the license plate.

Closing the Hatch

There are also three ways to close the power hatch:

Press the button on the rear hatch edge; the hatch moves to the closed position and the soft close mechanism locks.
Press and hold the switch on the driver's door to close.
Press the hatch button on the key fob.

Setting the Open Position

The opening height of the rear hatch can be adjusted.

While the rear hatch is opening, press the rear hatch button on the remote key fob to stop it at the desired height. You may also stop it by pressing the fS] button on the rear hatch.
Press and hold the button on the rear hatch edge until the rear lights blink and a tone is heard.

The opening height of the rear hatch can be readjusted to the maximum height by pushing upward on the rear hatch and then repeating Step 2.

Important Safety Instructions and Warnings: Rear Hatch

Accidents and severe personal injuries can result if you unlock, open, or close the rear hatch when someone is in the way.
Only open or close the rear hatch if no one is in the way.
After closing the rear hatch, always make sure that it is properly closed and locked so that it cannot open suddenly when the vehicle is moving. The closed rear hatch must be flush with the surrounding auto body parts.
Always keep the rear hatch closed while driving to help keep poisonous exhaust gas from being drawn into the vehicle.
Never open the rear hatch when a luggage rack is installed and loaded. If, for example, there are bicycles on a carrier on the rear hatch, it is possible that the lid will not be able to open automatically. An open rear hatch may fall on its own because of the additional weight. The open rear hatch must be supported or the weight must be removed from the luggage rack first.
Close and lock the rear hatch and all doors when the vehicle is not in use. First, make sure that no one is left inside the vehicle.
Never leave your vehicle unattended or let children play around your vehicle, especially when the rear hatch is open. A child could crawl into the vehicle and pull the rear hatch shut, becoming trapped and unable to get out. A closed vehicle can become very hot or very cold, depending on the season.
Particularly in the summer, heat build-up in the passenger and luggage compartment of a parked vehicle can result in temperatures in the vehicle that are much higher than the outside temperatures. Temperatures can quickly reach levels that can cause unconsciousness and death, particularly to small children.
Never leave children or anyone who cannot help themselves behind in the vehicle. They may lock the vehicle with the vehicle key or the power locking switch and lock themselves in.
If the rear hatch is not closed properly, it may open suddenly when the vehicle is moving and cause severe injuries. Stop immediately and close the rear hatch.
Always make sure the rear hatch is securely latched after you close it.
Improper and unsupervised unlocking or opening of the rear hatch can cause severe injuries. Never open the rear hatch when someone is in the way.
If a bicycle or luggage rack is installed on the rear hatch, it may be hard to see that the rear hatch is unlatched. An unlatched rear hatch may open suddenly when the vehicle is moving.
Improper or unsupervised closing of the rear hatch can cause severe injuries.
A closed rear hatch cannot open completely and an open rear hatch cannot close automatically if a luggage rack is installed on it or if it is covered by a heavy layer of snow. In this case, you will have to hold the rear hatch or prop it up to keep it open.
Careless use of the Easy Open feature can cause falls and serious personal injury
Always make sure you have firm footing when using the Easy Open feature and that the surface you are standing on is not uneven or slippery.
Always remember that it will be necessary for you to move backward to let the rear hatch open. Be careful not to lose your balance, particularly when holding things in your hands.
Never use Easy Open feature unless you can use it safely.
