#1 Can you put the ambilight on a steady colour or does it
change all the time please?

I have the 58" version and if its the same as mine (which
I'm sure it will be) then you have a number of options.
1) Follow Video (replicates colours on the screen and
projects
them through the LEDs on the back)
2) Follow Audio (pulses with the audio)
3) Lounge Light (You pick a colour and it lights up one
static colour)
4) Follow Flag (you set up the desired country and it
projects flag colours on the back)
5) App - Not quite sure what this setting is.
6) Off

#3 What is the sound quality like? Do I require a sound bar?

Sound quality is OK. Perfectly serviceable however a
soundbar would transform it.

#4 My 58inch tv doesn't show the volume level on screen
when i change the volume using the remote. is that
normal?

If you are using a soundbar, and using the soundbar remote
to turn it up and down it doesn't show the volume level on
the TV screen
