#1 How to log into the Google Play Store to install apps on Philips Android TV?

Situation

The TV is running with an Android operating system. Additional apps can be installed via the Google Play Store, which is accessible after it is connected to an existing Google account. The TV will stay connected to the account until the user disconnects it manually.

Checklist
Make sure that:

● The TV has a stable internet connection.

● The TV is updated to the latest available software version.

● Optional: A device with a connected Google account is available.

Answer
To install apps from the Google Play Store, first you need to log into it with your Google account.

GOOGLE PLAY STORE LOG-IN:
To sign in on the Android TV using a Google account, follow the steps below:

2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 Android TVs
Open the “Home” menu with the button on the remote control and go to the Apps shelf.


Follow the below steps:
Use the arrow keys on the remote control to navigate to the Play Store icon and press “OK” to enter the Google Play Store.


Remark
The Google Play Store is by default the first icon. However, the order of the icons change when apps are used. The most often used apps will be moved to top left.

Note: Once connected to the network, the Android TV will check with the Google server for updates. If available, the updates need to be installed first.

2. Choose sign in method
USE YOUR PASSWORD
You can sign in by providing the login information directly via the ‘Use your password’ option on the TV. This will require manually typing in the e-mail and password of the Google account.

USE YOUR PHONE OR LAPTOP
You can also synchronize the account of a phone or a laptop with the TV without having to type the account information into the TV by choosing the ‘Use your phone or laptop’ option on the TV.


Follow the below steps:
● Go to g.co/AndroidTV on your web or mobile browser

● Enter the code visible on the TV screen into the webpage on the phone or laptop screen


Next:
● Once the code is confirmed, Android TV will display that the device is now connected

● In the browser of the phone or laptop browser, click Continue

● Choose the Google account to sign in with

● A confirmation message will appear on the TV screen. An additional sign-in confirmation will be shown in the web browser on the phone or laptop.


Next:
Android TV will continue to the Terms of Agreement and Location settings.

APP INSTALLATION VIA GOOGLE PLAY STORE:
To install any App from the Play Store, follow these steps:

1. Enter the Google Play Store
After a Google Account has been added to the TV, the Google Play Store can be accessed within the TV’s Home menu.

2. App Installation
When in the Google Play Store, use the arrow keys on the remote control to browse through the apps by categories or use the search function to quickly find a specific app.

Select an app in the store and press the “OK” button on the remote control. Select ‘Install’ and press “OK” on the remote control to download and install this app on the TV.

3. Start the app
After the installation is complete, the app can be selected in the Home menu under [Apps] or [Top Apps & Games]. To start an app, highlight its icon and press the “OK” button on the remote control.

#2 How to update the software of Philips TV via USB?

Situation

A software update is useful:
• when problems occur on the television
• to get the latest features

Answer
To update the software on the TV, follow these steps:

1. Insert an empty USB flash drive into a computer
• Format the USB flash drive to FAT32 (right mouse click >“Format”)

• Note that Android software updates can be around 1GB, ensure you have a USB flash drive that has enough free space for you to save the software on


2. Open a web browser
Go to the Philips website and navigate to your product's support page (e.g. while reading this FAQ article, click on 'Support' on the navigation panel above).

Note Make sure that you have selected to correct model of the TV set.

3. Check the software on the web page
• Select the option “Software updates” in the page.
• The dedicated software for this TV model will appear, showing the version number


4. Check the current software version on the TV
Only update the software if the version mentioned on the website is higher than the software version installed on the TV. Click the file, accept the terms of use and save the file xx_xx.zip on the computer


5.”Unzip” To USB
For example: right-click on ‘xx_xx.zip’ and select ‘extract to’. It will ask where to save, select the USB flash drive.

6. Plug the USB into the television when the TV is ON
Do not switch off the TV during the update procedure!


9. Wait 5 - 15 minutes
• The screen will turn black for 5 to 10 seconds while the TV closes all apps.
• The software will now be updated. A message is shown “Installing system update” and a progress bar shows the status of the software update.
• The update will take 5 to 15 minutes, depending on the size of the update file.

• When the update is completed, the screen will go black for 3-5 seconds.
• The Philips logo will show
• After the TV is fully loaded, switch the TV OFF and ON again

#3 What to do when the TV does not respond to the infrared remote control?

Situation

The TV is not responding to the Philips remote control commands.

Checklist
Make sure that:

• the by-packed Philips remote control is used (no universal remote control)

Answer
To find out why the TV is not responding to the remote control, follow these steps:

1. Verify if the TV’s ON/OFF button is functional.
Press the button/joystick on the back of the TV to check if the TV responds.

Does the TV respond to the button(s) on the TV itself?

• Yes. Proceed to step 2 to verify the functionality of the remote control.

• No. Proceed to step 3 to check if the TV’s functionality can be restored.

2. Verify the functionality of the remote control
Proceed as follows to check if the remote control is functioning correctly:

2.1 Change the batteries

Place new batteries in the remote, preferably alkaline non-rechargeable batteries.

2.2 Does the LED light on the TV light up when pressing the button on the remote control?
• No, the LED does not light up: the remote control (or its batteries) is not working correctly. Proceed with step 2.3.
• Yes. The remote control is working correctly; if the TV still does not respond to the remote control proceed to step 3.

2.3 Camera test

Test the remote control with a digital camera or the camera on a Smart Device. Infrared light cannot be seen by the human eye, but it is visible when looking through the preview screen of a camera or a smart device.

Note: the following steps are not possible with an iPhone/ iPad camera! Those have an IR filter.

• Switch the camera ON
• Point the infrared LED light of the remote control to the lens of the camera
• Press a button on the remote control
A white light should be visible on the preview screen of the camera when a button is pressed on the remote control.

• If the light is visible, the remote control is producing a signal. Proceed to step 3.
• If the light is not visible, the remote control is not working. Proceed to step 4.

3. Verify the functionality of the TV
Proceed as follows to check if the TV’s functionality can be restored:

Perform a reset

• Unplug all cables and accessories from the TV such as:
antenna cable, HDMI cables, CI+ module, surround systems, etc.

• Unplug the TV’s power plug from the wall socket and wait for one minute after the LED light has switched OFF. After one minute only reconnect the power plug. Switch the TV back ON with the remote control. If the TV does not respond, press the button/joystick on the TV to switch the TV ON.

If the TV starts up and the remote control is functional again, the external devices can be connected to the TV again, one by one. Verify after each device is connected if the remote control is still functional. An external device can be the cause of the issue. Ensure that the software of the TV is up-to-date.

If the TV does not start up or still does not respond to the remote control, proceed with step 4.

To be able to control the TV when the remote control is defective, proceed as follows:

• Install the Philips TV Remote app on a Smart device:

• Pair the app with the TV by clicking the TV model name. Insert the code displayed on
the TV into the phone/tablet app.

If the TV does not respond to the remote control after the steps above, contact the dedicated Philips TV Support department. If possible, please have the following information ready:

• The model number of the TV
• The serial number of the TV
• The purchase date
