#1 Does this unit have backlit keys, does the display light up?

The unit does not have backlighting on the keys but does have a light-up LCD display.

#2 Does this printer turn itself off (or its wifi direct signal), if it sits unused but plugged in, for a certain amount of time, automatically?

The Brother MFCJ1010DW does not turn itself off when connected to Wi-Fi and still plugged into the outlet. When not in use for a certain period of time, the machine will enter sleep mode. When in sleep mode, the machine will wake up and start printing when it receives a print job or a fax.

#3 Can I print from iPad?

It does support iPad printing.

#4 I set this printer up and added its wifi direct signal to my phone successfully, hours later I see printer turned itself off and no wifi signal,why?

By default the Wi-Fi direct feature will turn off after a certain period of it not being in use. To keep the Wi-Fi direct feature on, you can Do so by turning on the Group Owner setting. To enable Group Owner, press Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Direct → Group Owner → Press On.
