Epson ES-500W Questions and Answers

#1 Can i set this on my kitchen counter and scan incoming mail without having to sit at a pc? will the scanned files be ocred without any user input?

No, you will need to initiate the scan and save the scanned document from your computer. Although it is wireless, it is not a stand-alone scanning solution.

#2 How many feed rollers does this come with, and can they be cleaned or replaced? (My Neat scanner has only one roller resulting is skew problems.)

It has a total of 10 feed rollers. My review has a photo of the paper feed system showing 8 of the rollers. They are accessible for cleaning but I haven't seen a listing for replacement rollers. I discuss feed rollers in my review comparing it to the Xerox competitive model which includes spare rollers and they also list replacements for sale. Good question and an important one that many people who are new to document scanners neglect to ask.

#4 Can it scan to google drive?

You can scan to specific folders and save settings and destinations in presets. So if you have a google drive folder set up that updates and syncs to google drive like I do than yes, it will scan to google drive. That’s how I do it.

#5 Is the es-400 wireless? it says it scans to dropbox, but how does it get there? does the scan go from the scanner to the cloud/dropbox wirelessly?

No, the ES-400 is a USB connected scanner. Scanning to cloud services such as Dropbox is accomplished through the ScanSmart software that runs on the computer. ScanSmart provides a simple workflow for scanning and sending the documents to the cloud account. The Epson ES-500W is the wireless version of the ES-400 and it also uses ScanSmart on the computer to send items to cloud services.

#6 Can this be used to scan id cards?

Yes, you can scan state issued ids and insurance cards in their original format. The PROBLEM is when someone has laminated something like their Medicare card. It doesn’t scan those. They won’t feed through. We have an older scanner we use for those.

#7 Has anyone used this scanner for more than two years (moderate use)? I'm replacing a Neat Scanner that began to fail after about a year.

This is more of a business grade scanner than the Neat from top to bottom. I have a true paperless setup, I scan 99% of all of my documents (bills, receipts, instruction manuals, etc) the first time I handle them then shred the originals. The only thing I don't shred are legal documens but I still scan them. I have a routine that every month I make an offsite backup copy and every year I make an additional archive copy. I've scanned thousands of documents (more than moderate use) and the scanner has performed flawlessly. BTW this is my third scanner of this style, my first Epson.
