#1 Does this ice maker keep the ice frozen or is it a glorified cooler?

It keeps the ice frozen. No drain needed, just a water line.

#2 What is the noise level? Could it be installed in an open floor plan kitchen?

The first one was very noisy. I made an audio of it and sent it to Whynter. They found it out of tolerance and I returned it (at my expense.) The second one works fine and if very quiet. The refrigerator makes more noise.

#3 Can the Icemaker mechanism be removed so that it will just function as a mini freezer? I know that some units like this one can be used that way.

The model has not been tested without that feature, as it is designed to work as an ice maker. We feel obligated to let you know that any modifications/changes to the unit in any way will void your warranty.

#4 Does it self defrost?

No, but mine has been running in an non a/c environment for 8 months with no need to defrost. It is opened and closed 30 - 50 times a day.

#5 This says Marine ice maker, can this be installed in a residence?

I suppose it could. It is made to fit in an opening in a boat, but could be installed in a residence with the right adjustments. It has a feeding tube from water supply just like the icemakers in the home.
