This unit will not have the stainless plate in the back.

#2 what does covertible pertain to on this product.

The convertible means it can recirculate the air back into your home through a filter or it can be vented to the outside.

#3 Is the duct rectangular?

No the duct for this unit is a cylinder. The initial connection is a rectangle however.

#4 Does this item comes with a set of charcoal filters for starters?

The Whirlpool range hood will come with a grease filter.

#5 Distance from cooking surface?

Per the installation guide, the below specifications are listed for the distance between the cooking surface and the bottom of the vent. 24" (61.0 cm) min. for electric cooking surfaces 27" (68.6 cm) min. for gas cooking surfaces 30" (76.2 cm) suggested max. - bottom of range hood to cooking surface
