Humidors are designed to keep your cigars moist. To perform this vital function, a humidor must
maintain an appropriate level of humidity for your cigars. If not, the humidor may absorb moisture
from the cigars, causing them to dry out and compromising the optimal storage conditions required
for quality handmade cigars.

While a hygrometer is not essential for your humidor’s performance, it is necessary to know if you
humidor is functioning properly. The hygrometer measures the humidity level on the inside of the
humidor, and requires a calibration process. Please follow the next calibration steps outlined.

Step 1. Calibrate the hygrometer/Calibrar el higrómetro
Remove the humidification unit from the box and place it in a dish. Fill the humidification unit with
propylene glycol solution (also known as 50/50 solution). Propylene glycol is a safe solution for
prepping your humidor and humidifying your cigars. In the absence of propylene glycol, only use
distilled water. Never use tap water as it can create mold and over-humidification. Squirt enough
propylene glycol into the humidification unit to fill it up evenly. You can add distilled water to the
humidification unit, in addition to the propylene glycol, at the end to ensure the unit soaks up plenty
of moisture. Once full, shake the unit over a sink to drain excess solution, and then place it in the
humidor.

After filling the humidifier, leave the lid closed for at least 3 to 5 days. The longer you wait, the better.
For the best results the box should gradually reach the humidity level. Some cigar lovers will wait up
to 2 weeks before storing cigars in the humidor.

Step 3.

After 3 to 5 days, or longer, check the humidity level in the box. Ideally, your hygrometer should read
75% to 80% relative humidity. This slightly high level accommodates the initial moisture absorption by
the cigars.

When your hygrometer reads 75% to 80% relative humidity, you can store your cigars in the box. We
recommend filling the box to at least half its total capacity to keep the environment in the box stable.
It’s best to leave at least 20% of the interior space open, as more space allows better air and moisture
circulation among the stored cigars.

When having extended periods between smoking sessions, remember that your humidor needs
attention. Maintain a balanced humidity level of 65% to 72% RH. When your hygrometer drops below
60%, its time to rehydrate your humidor using either distilled water or propylene glycol solution, which
provides additional protection against unwanted bacteria. Many hobbyists opt for regular use of
distilled water and periodic addition of propylene glycol solution to their humidification unit every 3 to 4
cycles. Avoid using tap water to prevent mold and mildew, and to prevent your cigars from drying out.
