FINDING MODEL NUMBER
This Operator’s Manual is an important part of your new Lawn Mower. It will help you assemble, prepare
and maintain the unit for best performance. Please read and understand what it says.
Before you start assembling your new equipment, please locate the model plate on the
equipment and copy the information from it in the space provided below. The information on
the model plate is very important if you need help from our Customer Support Department or
an authorized dealer.
• You can locate the model number by standing behind the unit in the operating position and looking at
the rear of the deck. A sample model plate is explained below. For future reference, please copy the
model number and the serial number of the equipment in the space below.

SECTION 1: IMPORTANT SAFE OPERATION PRACTICES
WARNING: This symbol points out important safety instructions which, if not followed, could endanger
the personal safety and/or property of yourself and others. Read and follow all instructions in this manual
before attempting to operate this machine. Failure to comply with these instructions may result in personal
injury. When you see this symbol—HEED ITS WARNING.
WARNING: The Engine Exhaust from this product contains chemicals known to the State of California
to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
DANGER: This machine was built to be operated according to the rules for safe operation in this manual. As with
any type of power equipment, carelessness or error on the part of the operator can result in serious injury. This
machine is capable of amputating hands and feet and throwing objects. Failure to observe the following safety instruc-
tions could result in serious injury or death.
General Operation
1. Read this operator’s manual carefully in its entirety
before attempting to assemble this machine. Read,
understand, and follow all instructions on the machine
and in the manual(s) before operation. Be completely
familiar with the controls and the proper use of this
machine before operating it. Keep this manual in a safe
place for future and regular reference and for ordering
replacement parts.
2. This machine is a precision piece of power equipment,
not a plaything. Therefore, exercise extreme caution at all
times. Your unit has been designed to perform one job: to
mow grass. Do not use it for any other purpose.
3. Never allow children under 14 years old to operate this
machine. Children 14 years old and over should read and
understand the operation instructions and safety rules in
this manual and should be trained and supervised by a
parent. Only responsible individuals who are familiar with
these rules of safe operation should be allowed to use
this machine.
4. Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment is to
be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire, bones, toys and
other foreign objects which could be tripped over or
picked up and thrown by the blade. Thrown objects can
cause serious personal injury. Plan your mowing pattern
to avoid discharge of material toward roads, sidewalks,
bystanders and the like. Also, avoid discharging material
against a wall or obstruction which may cause
discharged material to ricochet back toward the operator.
5. To help avoid blade contact or a thrown object injury, stay
in the operator zone behind the handles and keep
bystanders, helpers, children and pets at least 75 feet
from the machine while it is in operation. Stop machine if
anyone enters the area.
6. Always wear safety glasses or safety goggles during
operation and while performing an adjustment or repair to
protect your eyes. Thrown objects which ricochet can
cause serious injury to the eyes.
7. Wear sturdy, rough-soled work shoes and close-fitting
slacks and shirts. Shirts and pants that cover the arms
and legs and steel-toed shoes are recommended. Never
operate this machine in bare feet, sandals, slippery or
light weight (e.g. canvas) shoes.
8. Do not put hands or feet near rotating parts or under the
cutting deck. Contact with the blade can amputate hands
and feet.
9. A missing or damaged discharge cover can cause blade
contact or thrown object injuries.
10. Many injuries occur as a result of the mower being pulled
over the foot during a fall caused by slipping or tripping.
Do not hold on to the mower if you are falling; release the
handle immediately.
11. Never pull the mower back toward you while you are
walking. If you must back the mower away from a wall or
obstruction first look down and behind to avoid tripping
and then follow these steps:
a. Step back from the mower to fully extend your
arms.
b. Be sure you are well balanced with sure footing.
c. Pull the mower back slowly, no more than half way
toward you.
d. Repeat these steps as needed.
12. Do not operate the mower while under the influence of
alcohol or drugs.
13. Do not engage the self-propelled mechanism on units so
equipped while starting engine.
14. The blade control handle is a safety device. Never
attempt to bypass its operation. Doing so makes the
safety device inoperative and may result in personal
injury through contact with the rotating blade. The blade
control handle must operate easily in both directions and
automatically return to the disengaged position when
released.
15. Never operate the mower in wet grass. Always be sure of
your footing. A slip and fall can cause serious personal
injury. If you feel you are losing your footing, release the
blade control handle immediately and the blade will stop
rotating within three seconds.
16. Mow only in daylight or in good artificial light. Walk, never
run.
17. Stop the blade when crossing gravel drives, walks or
roads.
18. If the equipment should start to vibrate abnormally, stop
the engine and check immediately for the cause.
Vibration is generally a warning of trouble.
19. Shut the engine off and wait until the blade comes to a
complete stop before removing the grass catcher or
unclogging the chute. The cutting blade continues to
rotate for a few seconds after the engine is shut off.
Never place any part of the body in the blade area until
you are sure the blade has stopped rotating.

20. Never operate mower without proper trail shield,
discharge cover, grass catcher, blade control handle or
other safety protective devices in place and working.
Never operate mower with damaged safety devices.
Failure to do so, can result in personal injury.
21. Muffler and engine become hot and can cause a burn. Do
not touch.
22. Only use parts and accessories made for this machine by
the manufacturer. Failure to do so, can result in personal
injury.
23. If situations occur which are not covered in this manual,
use care and good judgment. Contact your dealer for
assistance or call 1-800-528-1009 for the name of your
nearest dealer.
Slope Operation
Slopes are a major factor related to slip and fall accidents
which can result in severe injury. Operation on slopes
requires extra caution. If you feel uneasy on a slope, do not
mow it. For your safety, use the slope gauge included as part
of this manual to measure slopes before operating this unit on
a sloped or hilly area. If the slope is greater than 15 degrees,
do not mow it.
Do:
1. Mow across the face of slopes; never up and down.
Exercise extreme caution when changing direction on
slopes.
2. Watch for holes, ruts, rocks, hidden objects, or bumps
which can cause you to slip or trip. Tall grass can hide
obstacles.
3. Always be sure of your footing. A slip and fall can cause
serious personal injury. If you feel you are losing your
balance, release the blade control handle immediately,
and the blade will stop rotating within 3 seconds.
Do Not:
1. Do not mow near drop-offs, ditches or embankments,
you could lose your footing or balance.
2. Do not mow slopes greater than 15 degrees as shown on
the slope gauge.
3. Do not mow on wet grass. Unstable footing could cause
slipping.
Children
Tragic accidents can occur if the operator is not alert to the
presence of children. Children are often attracted to the
mower and the mowing activity. They do not understand the
dangers. Never assume that children will remain where you
last saw them.
1. Keep children out of the mowing area and under the
watchful care of a responsible adult other than the
operator.
2. Be alert and turn mower off if a child enters the area.
3. Before and while moving backwards, look behind and
down for small children.
4. Use extreme care when approaching blind corners,
doorways, shrubs, trees, or other objects that may
obscure your vision of a child who may run into the
mower.
5. Keep children away from hot or running engines. They
can suffer burns from a hot muffler.
6. Never allow children under 14 years old to operate a
power mower. Children 14 years old and over should
read and understand the operation instructions and
safety rules in this manual and should be trained and
supervised by a parent.
Service
Safe Handling Of Gasoline:
1. To avoid personal injury or property damage use extreme
care in handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely
flammable and the vapors are explosive. Serious
personal injury can occur when gasoline is spilled on
yourself or your clothes which can ignite.
2. Wash your skin and change clothes immediately.
3. Use only an approved gasoline container.
4. Never fill containers inside a vehicle or on a truck or
trailer bed with a plastic liner. Always place containers on
the ground away from your vehicle before filling.
5. When practical, remove gas-powered equipment from
the truck or trailer and refuel it on the ground. If this is not
possible, then refuel such equipment on a trailer with a
portable container, rather than from a gasoline dispenser
nozzle.
6. Keep the nozzle in contact with the rim of the fuel tank or
container opening at all times until fueling is complete. Do
not use a nozzle lock-open device.
7. Extinguish all cigarettes, cigars, pipes and other sources
of ignition.
8. Never fuel machine indoors because flammable vapors
will accumulate in the area.
9. Never remove gas cap or add fuel while the engine is hot
or running. Allow engine to cool at least two minutes
before refueling.
10. Never over fill fuel tank. Fill tank to no more than ½ inch
below bottom of filler neck to provide space for fuel
expansion.
11. Replace gasoline cap and tighten securely.
12. If gasoline is spilled, wipe it off the engine and
equipment. Move unit to another area. Wait 5 minutes
before starting the engine.
13. Never store the machine or fuel container inside where
there is an open flame, spark or pilot light as on a water
heater, space heater, furnace, clothes dryer or other gas
appliances.
14. To reduce fire hazard, keep mower free of grass, leaves,
or other debris build-up. Clean up oil or fuel spillage and
remove any fuel soaked debris.
15. Allow a mower to cool at least 5 minutes before storing.
General Service:
1. Never run an engine indoors or in a poorly ventilated
area. Engine exhaust contains carbon monoxide, an
odorless and deadly gas.
2. Before cleaning, repairing, or inspecting, make certain
the blade and all moving parts have stopped. Disconnect
the spark plug wire and ground against the engine to
prevent unintended starting.

3. Check the blade and engine mounting bolts at frequent
intervals for proper tightness. Also, visually inspect blade
for damage (e.g., bent, cracked, worn) Replace blade
with the original equipment manufacture’s (O.E.M.) blade
only, listed in this manual. “Use of parts which do not
meet the original equipment specifications may lead to
improper performance and compromise safety!”
4. Mower blades are sharp and can cut. Wrap the blade or
wear gloves, and use extra caution when servicing them.
5. Keep all nuts, bolts, and screws tight to be sure the
equipment is in safe working condition.
6. Never tamper with safety devices. Check their proper
operation regularly.
7. After striking a foreign object, stop the engine, disconnect
the spark plug wire and de-energize the starter. Refer to
“To De-Energize SwiftStart™” section on page 11.
Thoroughly inspect the mower for any damage. Repair
the damage before starting and operating the mower.
8. Never attempt to make a wheel or cutting height
adjustment while the engine is running.
9. Grass catcher components, discharge cover, and trail
shield are subject to wear and damage which could
expose moving parts or allow objects to be thrown.
For safety protection, frequently check components and
replace immediately with original equipment
manufacturer’s (O.E.M.) parts only, listed in this manual.
“Use of parts which do not meet the original equipment
specifications may lead to improper performance and
compromise safety!”
10. Do not change the engine governor setting or overspeed
the engine. The governor controls the maximum safe
operating speed of the engine.
11. Maintain or replace safety and instruction labels, as
necessary.
12. Observe proper disposal laws and regulations. Improper
disposal of fluids and materials can harm the
environment.
13. ALWAYS de-energize SwiftStart
™ prior to performing
any maintenance or service to the engine and/or mower.
Follow instructions in the owner’s manual and on the
engine and/or the machine to de-energize starter.
Your Responsibility
• Restrict the use of this power machine to persons who read, understand and follow the warnings and instructions in
this manual and on the machine.

SECTION 2: SLOPE GAUGE
Use this page as a guide to determine slopes where you may not operate safely. Do not operate your lawn mower
on such slopes.

WARNING
Do not mow on inclines with a slope in excess of 15 degrees (a rise of approximately 2-1/2 feet every 10 feet). A riding mower could
overturn and cause serious injury. If operating a walk-behind mower on such a slope, it is extremely difficult to maintain your footing
and you could slip, resulting in serious injury.
Operate RIDING mowers up and down slopes, never across the face of slopes.
Operate WALK-BEHIND mowers across the face of slopes, never up and down slopes.

SECTION 3: ASSEMBLING YOUR LAWN MOWER
Removing Unit From Carton
• Remove staples, break glue on top flaps, or cute
tape at carton end and peel along top flap to open
carton.
• Remove loose parts if included with unit (i.e.
operator’s manual, oil, etc.)
• Cut along corners, lay carton down flat, and remove
packing material.
• Roll or slide unit out of carton and check carton
thoroughly for loose parts.
Hardware Pack
1. Carriage Bolt 1/4-20 x .75” (2)
2. Wing Nut with Bell Washer (2)
IMPORTANT:
This unit is shipped without gasoline or oil
in the engine. Be certain to service engine with gasoline
and oil as instructed in the separate engine manual
before operating your mower.
NOTE: Reference to right or left hand side of the mower
is observed from the operating position.
Before Assembly
WARNING: Disconnect the spark plug
wire and ground against the engine to
prevent unintended starting. Leave safety
key in locked position.
Assembling Mower
• Remove grass bag from unit and set it aside.
• Lift up and pull back on the upper handle to raise
the handle into the operating position. Make certain
the lower handle is seated securely into the handle
mounting brackets. Tighten the wing nuts on each
side of the handle (carriage bolts must be seated
properly into the handles) See Figure 1.

NOTE: Your mower is shipped with the handle in the
higher height position. If you wish to lower the height of
the handle, refer to the Adjustment Section at this time.
• Remove the hairpin clip from the outer hole in the
weld pin on the handle mounting bracket. Using a
pair of pliers, squeeze one leg of the lower handle
against the handle mounting bracket. Insert the
hairpin clip into the inner hole on the weld pin.
Repeat on the other side. See Figure 2.

• Place each carriage bolt (found in the hardware
pack included with your unit) in the upper hole of
the handle mounting bracket from the inside out.
Secure with the plastic wing nut. See Figure 3.
Repeat on the other side.

NOTE: Make certain the drive cable is routed around
the outside and above the lower handle so that it does
not interfere with attaching the grass bag.
• Fasten the cables to the lower handle with the two
cable ties found on the lower handle. Be sure to
insert the post on the cables ties into the holes
provided on the lower handle. These holes may be
found on either the inside or outside of the handle.
Pull the cable ties tight and trim off the excess. See
Figure 4.

• The rope guide, connected to the support rod, is
located on the right side of the lower handle. See
Figure 5.

• With the spark plug wire disconnected and
grounded, and with the safety key in the locked
position, pull the starter rope out of the engine. Slip
the starter rope into the rope guide. Tighten the
wing nut to secure.

• Remove wing nuts holding the mulching baffle or
side discharge chute in place and remove from unit.
• Replace with grass bag adapter, while making sure
the inner lip of attachment goes under the edge of
the deck. Secure with the wing nuts previously
removed. See Figure 6.
• Lift chute door on the grass bag adapter and slide
grass bag onto the adapter. See Figure 7.
NOTE: The chute door has been designed to move the
starter rope out of the way of the bag when the chute
door is opened.

Attaching Side-Discharge Chute
• Remove mulching baffle or grass bag adapter from
the unit by disconnecting the wing nuts.
• Attach side discharge chute to the unit and secure
with wing nuts. See Figure 8.

SECTION 4: KNOW YOUR LAWN MOWER
WARNING: Be familiar with the location and operation of all controls on the mower. Know how to stop
the machine and disengage these controls quickly.

Engine Controls
See the separate engine manual for the location and
function of the controls on the engine.
Blade Control Handle
The blade control handle is located on the upper handle
of the mower. The blade control handle and the starter
control button must be depressed in order to operate
the unit. Release blade control handle to stop the
engine and the blade and to energize the SwiftStart™.
See Figure 9.
WARNING: The blade control handle is a
safety device. Never attempt to bypass its
operations. Doing so, may result personal
injury through contact with the rotating blade.
The blade will rotate whenever the engine is
running and when self-starter is de-energized.
Cutting Height Adjustment Lever
The cutting height adjustment lever is located above
the left rear wheel. To adjust the cutting height, refer to
page 12 of this manual.
Drive Clutch Control
The drive clutch control is located on the upper handle.
Squeeze the drive clutch control to engage the drive
system; release to disengage. Release the clutch
control to slow down when approaching an obstacle,
making a turn, or stopping the mower. See Figure 9.
Shift Lever
The shift lever is located on the drive clutch control
housing on the upper handle. This lever is used to
select the forward speed of the mower. When changing
speed selection, release the drive clutch control. See
Figure 9.
NOTE: Slide the shift lever to a different speed position
only when the engine is running. Otherwise it may
cause damage to the mower.
Safety Key
The safety key is located on the engine. See Figure 9. It
is a safety device used to activate and deactivate the
SwiftStart™ system. The SwiftStart™ system will not
work without the key in its proper position. See the
engine manual for details on the safety key.
NOTE: The safety key must be in the “Run” position to
start the mower for either the SwiftStart™ or recoil
starter system.
Recoil Starter
The recoil starter is attached to the right lower handle. It
is used to start the engine when the SwiftStart™ is in
the de-energized mode. See Figure 9.
SwiftStart™ Control Button
This button is located on the upper left side of the upper
handle. See Figure 9. The start control button must be
depressed fully while pulling the blade control handle
toward upper handle for the engine to start. The starter
control button will automatically return to the off/up
position once the blade control handle is released.
NOTE: The SwiftStart™ control button must be
depressed to start the engine either with the
SwiftStart™ or recoil starter system.

SECTION 5: OPERATING YOUR LAWN MOWER
Before Starting
WARNING: Read, understand, and follow
all instructions and warnings on the machine
and in this manual before operating.
• Attach spark plug wire to spark plug. Make certain the
metal cap on the end of the spark plug wire is fastened
securely over the metal tip on the spark plug.
• Check proper drive clutch operation using the
neutral adjustment test.
Neutral Adjustment Test
To perform the neutral adjustment test answer the
following questions.
• With the drive clutch control released, push mower
forward and pull it backward. Does it move freely?
• Squeeze the drive clutch control and pull the
mower backward. Do the rear wheel lock?
• If you answered “yes” to all three questions, you
can start your mower now.
• If you answered “no” to any of the three questions,
you will have to adjust the drive clutch control
following instructions on page 12.
Gas & OIl Fill-Up
Service the engine with gasoline and oil as instructed in
the engine manual. Read instructions carefully.
WARNING: Use extreme care when
handling gasoline. Gasoline is extremely
flammable and the vapors are explosive.
Never fuel machine indoors or while the
engine it hot or running. Extinguish cigarettes,
cigars, pipes, and other sources of ignition.
Starting Engine First Time
NOTE: Use recoil starter rope to start engine for the
very first time. The mower is shipped with the safety key
in the locked position and the SwiftStart™ in the de-
energized mode.
1. Place lawn mower on a level surface outdoors.
2. Remove plastic wrap under fuel cap.
3. Check oil level.
4. Add fuel.
5. Open shut off valve (if equipped) 1/4 turn.
6. Push spark plug wire firmly on spark plug.
7. Turn SwiftStart™ safety key 1/4 turn clockwise to
RUN position.
8. Firmly push primer bulb three times.
9. While standing at the operating position and behind
the upper handle, depress the starter control button
fully with your right thumb.
10. Using your left hand, pull the blade control handle
all the way toward the upper handle.
11. Release the button.
12. Grasp the recoil rope starter handle with your right
hand and slowly pull towards you until you feel a
slight resistance, then pull firmly until your arm is
fully extended.
13. If engine does not start by second pull, repeat steps
8, 9 10,11 and 12.
Starting Engine Second Time
NOTE: Follow these instructions if the SwiftStart™ is
already in the energized mode.
WARNING: NEVER assume starter is in the
de-energized mode, even if the key is in the
locked position and/or removed from the engine.
ALWAYS de-energize starter prior to performing
any maintenance or service to the engine and/or
mower. Follow instructions on the engine and/or
machine to de-energize starter.

1. Check oil lever and add fuel, if necessary.
2. Open shut-off valve (if equipped) 1/4 turn.
3. Turn safety key clockwise 1/4 turn to Run position.
4. If the engine is cold, firmly push primer bulb on the
engine three times.
5. While standing at the operating position and behind
the upper handle, depress the starter control button
fully with your right thumb.
6. Using your left hand, pull the blade control handle
all the way toward the upper handle. See Figure 10.
Starter will de-energize and engine will start.
(NOTE: If engine does not start, release blade
control handle and follow steps 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12
in the “First Time Starting Engine” instructions.)
NOTE: If any problems are encountered, refer to the
Trouble Shooting Guide for helpful information.

To Stop Engine and Blade
WARNING: The blade will continue to
rotate for three seconds after the blade
control lever is released.
1. Release safety blade control handle and the start
control button will automatically return to the off/up
position. The engine and the blade will stop within a
few seconds.
NOTE: Engine may stop with a ratcheting sound. This
sound is the SwiftStart™ control being reactivated/
energized for the next start.
2. Turn safety key 1/4 turn counterclockwise to “Lock”
position. Remove key and store in a safe place.
To De-Energize SwiftStart™
• Remove spark plug wire from spark plug. Turn
safety key to RUN position (1/4 turn clockwise).
• While standing in the operating position, depress
the starter control button fully with your right thumb.
• Using your left hand, pull the control handle all the
way toward the upper handle.
• Release the button and wait until the blade and the
SwiftStart™ stop rotating.
• Release safety blade control handle and the start
control button will automatically return to the off/up
position.
• Remove the key.
NOTE: Engine will crank upon actuating equipment-
starting controls, but will not spark if the spark plug wire
was removed from the spark plug as described above.
Once the engine has stopped cranking, the SwiftStart™
is de-energized.
WARNING: SwiftStart™ System: If the
instructions, listed below, are not followed,
amputation or severe laceration can result.
• ALWAYS disconnect spark plug, de-energize
starter, lock and remove safety key BEFORE
performing ANY service to the engine or mower.
• DO NOT attempt any maintenance or repairs to the
SwiftStart™.
• NEVER assume starter is de-energized, even if key
is in LOCK AND REMOVE position and/or removed

• ALWAYS de-energize SwiftStart™ BEFORE
removing grass or other debris from under mower
deck; BEFORE changing oil, air filter or spark plug;
BEFORE removing blade for servicing; BEFORE
performing any other service to engine or mower;
BEFORE transporting mower.
• ALWAYS lock and remove safety key and store in
a safe place until next use. The safety key is
designed and intended to be removed from engine
when not in use. Removing key will prevent
unsupervised or unexpected starting of mower by
children or unsuspecting adults. The safety key
must be in the locked position before it can be
removed.
Using Your Lawn Mower
• Thoroughly inspect the area where the equipment
is to be used. Remove all stones, sticks, wire,
bones, toys and other foreign objects which could
be tripped over or picked up and thrown by the
blade.
WARNING: Thrown objects can cause
serious personal injury.
• For best results, do not cut wet grass because it
tends to stick to the underside of the mower,
preventing proper discharge of grass clippings, and
could cause you to slip and fall. New grass, thick
grass or wet grass may require a narrower cut.
• When using side-discharge mower, the best
mowing pattern is one that allows the clippings to
discharge towards the uncut part of the lawn. This
permits recutting of the clippings to further pulverize
them. When cutting high weeds, discharge towards
cut portion, then recut at right angles to initial.
• For a healthier lawn, always cut off one-third or less
of the total length of the grass. Lawn should be cut
in the fall as long as there is growth.
WARNING: If you strike a foreign object
with your mower, stop the engine. Remove
wire from spark plug and de-energize starter,
thoroughly inspect the mower for any
damage, and repair the damage before
restarting and operating the mower.
Excessive vibration of the mower during
operation is an indication of damage. The unit
should be promptly inspected and repaired.
Mulching
• For effective mulching, do not cut wet grass
because it tends to stick to the underside of the
deck, preventing proper mulching of grass
clippings. New or thick grass may require a
narrower cut.
• Adjust the ground speed according to the condition
of the lawn.
• If mowing has been delayed and the grass has
been allowed to grow in excess of 4”, do not mulch
the grass. Mow using the grass bag to reduce the
grass height to 3 1/4” maximum before mulching.

Emptying Grass Bag
• While holding the grass bag by both the rear handle
and the lower handle, lift the grass bag from the
adapter. The chute door will move the rope out of
the way of the bag.
• Continue to hold the lower handle and raise the
rear of the grass bag up toward your chest. The
grass bag will open and the grass clippings will
disperse. See Figure 11.
• When replacing the grass bag, be sure the top of
the bag rests on the wire support between the two
lower handles.

SECTION 6: MAKING ADJUSTMENTS

ALWAYS de-energize starter prior to performing
any maintenance or service to the engine and/or
mower. Follow instructions on the engine and/or
the machine to de-energize the starter.
Cutting Height
Your mower is shipped with the cutting height in the
lowest position. The cutting height adjustment lever is
located above the left rear wheel. To adjust the cutting
height, pull the lever out and away from the mower and
choose a cutting height. Slide it into the new position.
See Figure 12.

NOTE: For rough or uneven lawns, move the height
adjustment lever to the highest position. This will help
stop scalping.
Handle Height Adjustment
Your mower is shipped with the handle in the higher
height position. To lower the height, proceed as follows:
• Remove the starter rope from the rope guide.
• Remove upper handle by removing the hand knobs
and carriage bolts. Lay the upper handle out of the
way, being careful not to bed or kink the cables.
• Remove the hairpin clips from the weld pins on the
handle brackets. Then remove carriage bolts and
wing nuts. Press out on the legs of the lower
handle. Remove lower handle from the mower.
• Turn lower handle around so the notch on the
bottom of the lower handle is facing forward. See
Figure 13. Reassemble, placing the bottom holes in
the handle over the weld pins in the handle
mounting bracket. Refer to Figure 3. Replace wing
nuts and carriage bolts.

The drive clutch control adjustment wheel is located in
the drive clutch control handle housing and is used to

tighten or loosen the drive belt. You will have to adjust
the drive clutch control if any of the following happens:
• The mower does not propel itself with the drive
clutch engaged.
• The mower’s drive wheels hesitate with the drive
clutch engaged.

• To resolve above problem, rotate the adjustment
wheel with your fingers: clockwise to tighten the
cable and counter-clockwise to loosen the cable.
See Figure 14.
NOTE: For some people, the drive clutch control may
not be in a comfortable position. If you are one of them,
adjust the handle out by tightening adjustment wheel.
Shift Lever Cable Adjustment
Periodic adjustment of the six-speed shift cable may be
required due to normal wear on the cable. Adjustment
is needed if all six speeds do not work.
The adjustable cable bracket is located on the left side
of the mower beside the engine.
• Start engine and place speed control lever in the
sixth speed position. See Figure 15.

Lubrication
Blade Control Handle
Lubricate the pivot points on the blade control handle at
least once a season with light oil. The blade control
must operate freely in both directions. See Figure 17.
Wheels
Lubricate the wheels at least once a season with light
oil (or motor oil). If the wheels are removed for any
reason, lubricate the surface of the axle bolt and inner
surface of the wheel with light oil. See Figure 17.

NOTE: When tipping the unit, empty the fuel tank and
keep the spark plug side of the engine up. Never tip the
mower more than 90 degrees and do not leave the
mower tipped for any length of time. Oil can drain into
the upper part of the engine causing a starting problem.
Engine
Refer to the accompanying engine manual for all
engine maintenance instructions. A list of general
recommendations are given below.
• Maintain engine oil as instructed in the separate
engine manual packed with your unit.
• Service air cleaner every 25 hours under normal
conditions. Poor engine performance and flooding
usually indicate that the air cleaner should be
serviced. To service the air cleaner, refer to the
separate engine manual packed with your unit.
• The spark plug should be cleaned and the gap
reset once a season. Spark plug replacement is
recommended at the start of each mowing season.
• Clean the engine regularly with a cloth or brush.
Keep the cooling system (blower housing area)
clean to permit proper air circulation. Remove all
grass, dirt, and debris from muffler area.
Cutting Deck
• The underside of the mower deck should be
cleaned after each use to prevent build-up of grass
clippings, leaves, dirt, or other matter. If this debris
is allowed to accumulate, it will invite rust and
corrosion, and hinder performance. Disconnect the
spark plug, tilt the mower and scrape clean with a
suitable tool.
IMPORTANT:
We do not recommend the use of a
pressure washer or garden hose to clean your unit. The
use of water will shorten life of the mower and reduce
serviceability.
Blade Replacement & Sharpening
WARNING: When removing the cutting
blade for sharpening or replacement, protect
your hands by using heavy gloves or a rag to
grasp the cutting blade.
• Remove the bolt and the blade bell support which
hold the blade and the blade adapter to the engine
crankshaft. See Figure 18.
• Remove the blade and the adapter from the
crankshaft.
WARNING: Periodically inspect the blade
adapter for cracks, especially if you strike a
foreign object. Replace when necessary.

• When sharpening the blade, follow the original
angle of grind as a guide. It is extremely important
that each cutting edge receives an equal amount of
g r i n d i n g t o p r e v e n t a n u n b a l a n c e d b l a d e .
IMPORTANT:
An unbalanced blade will cause excessive
vibration when rotating at high speeds. It may cause
damage to the mower, and could break causing
personal injury.
• The blade can be tested by balancing it on a round
shaft screwdriver. Remove metal from the heavy
side until it balances evenly. It is recommended that
the blade always be removed from the adapter
when testing for balance.
• Before reinstalling the blade and the blade adapter
to the unit, lubricate the engine crankshaft and the
inner surface of the blade adapter with light oil.
• Be sure to install the blade with the side of the
blade marked “bottom” (or with part number) facing
the ground when the mower is in the operating
position.
• Slide the blade adapter onto the engine crankshaft.
• Place the blade on the adapter. Be certain the
blade is aligned and seated on the blade adapter
flanges.
• Place blade bell support on blade. Make sure the
notches on the blade bell support are aligned with
small holes in the blade.

• Replace hex bolt and tighten hex bolt to torque: 450
in. lbs. min., 600 in. lbs. max.
NOTE: To ensure safe operation of your mower, the
blade bolt must be checked periodically for correct
torque.
Drive Belt Removal & Replacement
WARNING: Disconnect the spark plug wire
and ground it against the engine to prevent
unintended starting. Drain fuel into an
approved container or place a piece of plastic
film underneath the gas cap to prevent
gasoline from leaking.
• Disconnect the spark plug wire and ground it
against the engine.
• Drain the fuel tank or place a piece of plastic
beneath the cap to prevent gasoline leakage.
• Place shift lever in the first position and tip the
mower on its side.
• Remove the center bolt which secures the blade to
the crankshaft followed by blade bell support,
blade, and blade adapter.
• Move the cutting height adjustment to the highest
position.
• Remove the three hex screws holding the baffle to
the deck and pivot baffle towards the rear of the
mower. See Figure 19.

• Tilt the transmission forward and loosen the idler
pulley bolt and lock nut half a turn. See Figure 21.
• Using a pair of pliers, pull back and rotate belt
keeper bracket from the slot on the idler pulley.
• Slide the belt out from between the belt keeper
bracket and the idler pulley.
• Squeeze the belt together and push it forward,
while pressing the control arm inward towards the
deck and remove the six speed cable from the slot.
See Figure 21.
• Pivot the control arm down away from the pulley
and belt.
• Lift off the lower pulley assembly and remove the
old belt from around the crankshaft. See Figure 21.

• Place the new belt over the transmission pulley.
Start the belt in the pulley groove and rotate the
pulley until the belt is seated in transmission pulley.
• Place the belt between the idler pulley and the belt
keeper bracket.
• Using a pliers, rotate the belt keeper bracket so that
is snaps into slot on the idler bracket.
• Tighten the idler pulley bolt and lock nut half a turn.
• Place the belt between the two pulleys halves on
the crankshaft. Make sure to route the belt inside
the belt guard pins. See Figure 22.

IMPORTANT:
When replacing the belt, do not
disassemble the lower pulley assembly.
• Pinch both sides of the belt together so that the belt
is not in the pulley groove, and the lower pulley can
be pushed towards the engine. See Figure 23.

• Pivot the control arm back to its original position
and reinstall the six-speed cable into the slot. See
Figure 24.

• Check and make sure the belt is routed inside the
pulley halves and the belt guard pin.
• Reinstall the bolt securing transmission to rear
mower housing.
• Pivot the baffle back to its original position and
secure with three hex screws earlier removed.
• Lightly lubricate the inside of the blade adapter and
reinstall the spacer, wave washer, blade adapter
assembly, and blade in the correct order.
• Tighten the hex bolt to secure the blade to torque:
450-600 in. lbs.
SECTION 8: OFF SEASON STORAGE
The following steps should be taken to prepare your
lawn mower for storage.

WARNING: Never store the machine or the
fuel container indoors where there is an open
flame, spark or pilot light such as on water
heater, furnace, clothes dryer or other gas
appliance.
• Clean and lubricate the mower thoroughly as
described in the lubrication instructions.

poorly ventilated or metal storage shed, care should be
taken to rust-proof the equipment. Using a light oil or
silicone, coat the equipment, especially cables and all
moving parts.

Proper maintenance of your Cub Cadet equipment is the owner’s responsibility. Follow the instructions in your
operator’s manual for correct lubricants and maintenance schedule. Your Cub Cadet dealer carries a
complete line of quality lubricants and filters for your equipment’s engine, transmission, chassis and
attachments.
Riding mowers, lawn tractors, garden tractors, Cub Cadet
attachments and home maintenance products
This limited warranty for residential users, covers any defect in materials or workmanship in your Cub Cadet
equipment for two years from the date of purchase for the first user purchaser. We will replace or repair any
part or parts without charge through your authorized Cub Cadet dealer.
Batteries have a one-year prorated limited warranty with 100% replacement during the first three months.
V-belts for either the traction drive or any attachments are covered for one year only.
Cub Cadet equipment used commercially is warranted for one year only.
(Commercial use is defined as either having hired operators or used for income producing purposes.)
Items not covered
The warranty does not cover routine maintenance items such as lubricants, filters (oil, fuel, air and hydraulic),
cleaning, tune-ups, brake and/or clutch inspection, adjustments made as part of normal maintenance, blade
sharpening, set-up, abuse, accidents and normal wear. It does not cover incidental costs such as transporting
your equipment to and from the dealer, telephone charges or renting a product temporarily to replace a
warranted product.
There is no other express warranty.

Contact your authorized Cub Cadet servicing dealer who sold you your Cub Cadet equipment. If this dealer is
not available, see the Consumer Yellow Pages under “lawn mowers” for the name of a dealer near you.
