1.3. PERSONAL PRECAUTIONS
9 Ensurethereisanotherpersonwithinhearingrangeofyourvoiceandcloseenoughtocometoyouraid,shouldaproblemarise
when working near a lead-acid battery.
9 Wearsafetyeyeprotectionandprotectiveclothing.Avoidtouchingeyeswhileworkingnearbattery.
9 Havefreshwaterandsoapnearbyincasebatteryacidcontactsskin,clothingoreyes.
9 Washimmediatelywithsoapandwaterifbatteryacidcontactsskinorclothing.Ifacidenterseye,usheyeimmediatelywithcool,
clean running water for at least 15 minutes and seek immediate medical attention.
9 Removepersonalmetallicitemssuchasrings,bracelets,necklacesandwatches.Alead-acidbatterycanproduceashort-circuit
currentwhichishighenoughtoweldaringortheliketometal,whichwouldcausesevereburns.
9 Ensurehands,clothing(especiallybelts)areclearoffanbladesandothermovingorhotpartsofengine,removetiesandcontain
long hair.
8 DO NOTsmokeorallowasparkorameinthevicinityofbatteryorengine.
1.4. CHARGING SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
9 Familiarise yourself with the application and limitations of the charger as well as the potential hazards.
Alsorefertothevehiclemanufacturer’shandbook.IFINANYDOUBTCONSULTAQUALIFIEDELECTRICIAN.
9 Ensure the charger is in good order and condition before use. If in any doubt DO NOT use the unit, contact your Sealey stockist.
9 Usethestarter/chargerintheuprightpositiononlyandensureitisplacedonastablesurfacewhichwilladequatelysupportits
weight.
9 Ensure the charger is disconnected from the mains supply before attaching/detaching the power clamps to/from the battery.
9 Keep tools and other items away from the engine and ensure you can see the battery and working parts of engine clearly.
9 Ensuretheoutputofthechargeristhesamevoltageasthebattery.
9 Ifbatteryhascapstoaccessthebatteryuid,removethecapsandchecktheuidlevelbeforeconnectingthepowerclamps.
9 Ifnecessarytop-upthebatterywithdistilledwaterbyreferringtothebatterymanufacturer’sinstructions(Applythepersonalsafety
precautionsdescribedinpart1.3).
9 Ifthechargerreceivesasharpknockorblowtheunitmustbecheckedbyaqualiedserviceagentbeforeusing.

9 Anextensioncordshouldnotbeusedunlessabsolutelynecessary.Useofanimproperextensioncordcouldresultinariskofre
andelectricshock.Ifanextensioncordmustbeused,makesure:
•Thatthepinsontheplugoftheextensioncordarethesamenumber,sizeandshapeasthoseoftheplugonthecharger.
•Thattheextensioncordisproperlywiredandingoodelectricalcondition.
•ThatthewiresizeislargeenoughfortheACampereratingofthechargerasspecied.
9 Toreducetheriskofelectricshock,unplugthechargerfromtheoutletbeforeattemptinganymaintenanceorcleaning.Simply
turningothecontrolswillnotreducethisrisk.
9 Amarine(boat)batterymustberemovedandchargedonshore.Tochargeiton-boardrequiresequipmentspeciallydesignedfor
marine use.
CAUTION:Onlyallowchildrenatleast8yearsoldtousethebatterycharger.Givesucientinstructionsothatthechildisabletousethe
batterychargerinasafewayandexplainthatitisnotatoyandmustnotbeplayedwith.
Instruct the child not to try and recharge non-rechargeable batteries because of the risk of eruption.
Examinethebatterychargerregularlyfordamage,itmustnotbeuseduntilithasbeenrepaired.
Thisappliancecanbeusedbychildrenagedfrom8yearsandaboveandpersonswithreducedphysical,sensoryormental
capabilitiesorlackofexperienceandknowledgeiftheyhavebeengivensupervisionorinstructionconcerninguseofthe

2. INTRODUCTION

leadacidandcalciumbatterieswithautochemistryselection.Additionalfunctiontochargelithiumbatteriesviaselectionbutton
onfrontofunit.Zerovoltbatterycharging,enablingrecoveryandchargingofacompletelydischargedbattery(providinganyload
removedfromtherechargeablebattery).Oldbatterysulfationrepairfunction.13.5VDCpowersupplyforbatterysupportfunction
providingsupportforthebatteryduringprolongedelectronicdiagnosticchecks.Reversepolarity,shortcircuit,overtemperature
andoverchargingprotection.Built-incoolingfanthatonlyoperateswhenrequired.IntuitiveLEDscreendisplayschargingvoltage,

4. OPERATION
WARNING! Thechargerdoeshaveanon/oswitch.Theonandocommandsarecontrolledbytheon/oswitchonthebackof
theunitwhichisonlyoperationaloncetheacplugofthespbc30&spbc40hasbeenpluggedintotheacelectricalwallsocket.
4.1. BATTERY CHARGER PROTECTION SYSTEMS
4.1.1. Over-charging protection
Thebatterychargercontainsanadvancedmicrochipmonitoringandcontrollingsystemtoensurethatthebatterydoesnotbecome
overchargedwhichcanresultinthelossofelectrolyteorininternalshortcircuitwhichcancausedamagetothebattery.
4.1.2. Overload protection
Overloadprotectionwillactivatewhenthecurrentexceeds120%ofthemaximumworkingcurrent.
4.1.3. High temperature protection
Hightemperatureprotectionwillactivatewhentheinternaltemperatureofthechargerrisesabove50°C.Ifthisoccurs,thecharger
outputisautomaticallyreduced.Oncethetemperatureisbelowapproximately35°C,thechargeroutputwillreturntonormal.This
featureisdesignedtoprotectthebatteryandthebatterychargerwhentheyarebeingusedinenvironmentswithveryhighambient
temperatures.
4.1.4. Even charging function
Byslowlyraisingthevoltage,thebatteriescellswithalowervoltagearenotchargedtooquicklywhichcanoverheatindividualbattery
cells,comparedtobatterycellswithahighervoltage.
4.1.5. Reverse polarity protection
Whenreverseconnected,thescreenLEDwillashandtheoutputpowerwillbecuto.Thisprotectionwillprotectboththecharger
andthebatteryfromdamage.Ifyouhaveaccidentallymadeareversepolarityconnection,pleaseswitchbatterychargerofromAC
power, and correct the battery clamp connections to the correct polarities.
4.1.6. Short circuit protection
Nooutputwhenclampsareconnectedtogether,poweroutputonlyoccurswhenconnectedtoabattery.Thispreventscharger
malfunction if clamps accidentally come in contact with each other.
4.2. BATTERY CHARGING INSTRUCTIONS
4.2.1. Step 1. Connect battery charger cables to battery charger, using the supplied nuts to the correct polarity terminals on the front of the
charger–(Red+Positive)/(Black–Negative).PleaseDO NOTover-tightennutsonfrontpanel.
4.2.2. Step 2.ElectrolyteLevelCheck(whereapplicable).Forsealedmaintenancefreebatteriescheckthestateofchargeindicator.

4.2.3. Step 3. Connect battery charger to battery.

Ensurethebatteryisinasafelocationonastablesurfacewithadequateventilation.
EnsurethecorrectPersonalProtectiveEquipmentisbeingworni.e.GlovesandEyeWear.
Plug the battery charger into the mains power source ensuring that the power is OFF.
ConnecttheREDlead(BatteryClamp)tothePositiveTerminal(+/positive)onthebattery.
ConnecttheBLACKlead(BatteryClamp)totheNegativeTerminal(-/negative)onthebatteryortoametalgroundednon-movingpart
ofthevehicle.
TurnthemainspowersourceON,andswitchthepowerswitchontherearoftheunittoONtocommencecharging.
4.3. LITHIUM BATTERY ONLY – Press and hold MODE button for 3 seconds until LITHIUM LED indicator lights up. Lithium Mode
willautomaticallyturnowhenchargerpowerisdisconnected.
Thebatterychargerwillcommenceworkingautomaticallywithouttheneedforanyfurtheruserinput.Oncethebatteryisfullycharged
turn the power switch on the rear of the unit OFF, and disconnect the mains power source.
DisconnecttheBLACKlead(BatteryClip)fromtheNegativeTerminal(-/negative).
DisconnecttheREDlead(BatteryClip)fromthePositiveTerminal(+/positive).
Retbatteryintovehicleandcorrectlyreconnectusingthevehiclemanufacturer’srecommendations,orIfrequired,replaceortighten
theventcapsonthebattery
4.3.1. Step 4. Charging Sequence

• IfthebatteryleadsareplacedonthereversepolarityterminalsofthebatterytheScreenLEDwillash,indicatingthatthebattery
charger has been incorrectly connected to the battery. Immediately disconnect the battery charger from the battery terminals and
correctlytthebatterycablestothecorrectbatteryterminals.
4.4. CHARGING STAGES
4.4.1. Analysis / Desulphation
Asmallvoltagepulseisappliedtothebatterytoensureitcaneectivelyandsafelyacceptacharge.Desulphationusespulse
reconditioningtogentlyremoveanysulphationbuilduponthebatteryplatesandpreventsoxidization.Stabilizeselectrolyte
consistencyandminimisesthebatterytemperaturerisingwhilecharging,recoversbatterycapacityandcanhelpextendbatterylife.
Soft Start
Thesoftstartfunctionimprovesthebatterieschargingcapability,reducesgasandheatbuild-upandcanimproveelectrolyte
consistencywhichcanbecomeuneveninthebattery’scellsfromdaytodayuse.Asteadilyincreasingcurrentisappliedoveraset
timesoasnottoinitiallyoverloadthebattery.Thisstagepreparesthebatteryforthemoreintensechargingstagestofollow.
4.4.2. Bulk charge
Maximumchargecurrentisdeliveredtothebatterytominimizechargetimes.

4.4.3. Absorption
Reduces the current supplied to the battery and ensures that the battery has been completely charged without the risk of being
overcharged.
4.4.4. Analysis – Testing the battery while charging
Thechargershutsopowerandmeasuresvoltagedropoverasettime.Ifunacceptablereadingsaremeasuredthismayindicatean
internal short or other issue inside the battery.
If the battery has a fault the charger will stop charge, the charger will cut output and will not continue charging until it is either switched
o,orthebatteryisremoved.FaultyBatteryindicatorswillactivateifthebatterybeingchargediscompletelydeadandcannotbe
charged.Dependingonwhatbatteryisbeingcharged,6Vor12Vor24VLEDwillashifbatteryisfaulty.
4.4.5. Boost/ equalisation charge
Oncethebatteryisfullycharged,thechargerwillequalizeallofthebatterycellsbyprovidingasteadysetvoltageoveraprogrammed
period of time, at low current.
4.4.6. Float charge:
Aftertheboost/equalisationchargestage,thecurrentwilldroptolowamperagetomaintainthebatteryinafullychargedandreadyto
use state.
4.4.7. Maintenance charge
Aftertheoatchargestage,thevoltagewillmaintainataconstantlevelwithasmallpulsefrequency.Currentisdroppedtoaverylow
level.
4.4.8. Power Supply Mode:
ThisbatterychargeristtedwithaDCpowersupplymode.Thismodewilldeliveraconstant13.5Voltsat30/40Ampsandcanbe
usedforpowering12VDCappliances,lightingorusedfortesting12Vdevices.TheDCpowersupplyalsohasoverloadandshort
circuit protection.
4.4.8.1. To enter the DC power supply mode:
• Ensureunitisswitchedobeforemakinganyconnections.
• Switchthe240VACandthepowerswitchontheunitON.
• PresstheMODEbuttontwiceuntiltheDCSUPPLYLEDindicatorisilluminated.
• ConnecttheREDlead(BatteryClip)tothepositiveinputonthedevice.
• ConnecttheBlacklead(BatteryClip)tothenegativeinputonthedevice.
• Toswitchopowersupply;rstturnthepowerswitchonthebackoftheunito,thenturnoorunplugtheACpower.
• DisconnecttheDCpowerleadsfromthedevice.
• TheDCpowermodewillautomaticallyturnoandreverttoBatteryChargingwhenthechargeristurnedoandpoweredbackon.
4.4.8.2. WARNING: DO NOTENABLEDCPOWERSUPPLYMODEWHENCONNECTEDTOABATTERYINORDERTOPREVENT
SEVEREBATTERYFAILURE.
5. MAINTENANCE
WARNING!Afteruseandbeforeperformingmaintenance,unpluganddisconnectthebatterycharger.
5.1. Cleaning and user maintenance should be carried out by competent persons.
5.2. Useadryclothtowipeallbatterycorrosionandotherdirtoroilfromthebatteryconnectors,cords,andthechargercase.
5.3. Ensurethatallofthechargercomponentsareinplaceandingoodworkingcondition,forexample,theplasticbootsonthe
battery clips.
5.4. Servicingdoesnotrequireopeningtheunit,astherearenoserviceableparts.
5.5. Allotherservicingshouldbeperformedbyqualiedservicepersonnel.
5.6. If the mains cable is damaged, DO NOT use until repaired.
5.7. Storethechargerunplugged,inanuprightposition.Thecordwillstillconductelectricityuntilitisunpluggedfromthemains.
5.8. Store inside, in a cool, dry place.
8 DO NOTstoretheconnectorsclippedtogether,onoraroundmetal,orclippedtocables.Ifthechargerismovedaroundtheshopor
transportedtoanotherlocation,takecaretoavoid/preventdamagetothecables,connectorsandcharger.Failuretodosocouldresult
in personal injury or property damage.
