Safety Precautions
Thank you for purchasing this printer.
Be sure to read the “Safety Precautions” before using this product to ensure
that you use it correctly.

Battery Precautions
Should fluid leaking from a battery get on your skin or clothing,
immediately rinse it off with clean water.
Battery fluid getting into the eyes creates the risk of eyesight loss, etc.
Rinse the eyes and then immediately contact a physician.

Do not touch the plug with wet hands.
Doing so creates the risk of electric shock.
If the AC adaptor or power cord becomes damaged, contact your

Before leaving the product unattended, unplug the AC adaptor from
the power outlet, and move the product to a location away from
animals and pets.
Pet chewing or urine can cause shorting, which creates the risk of fire.
AC Adaptor
Observe the precautions below in order to avoid AC adaptor fire
and electric shock.
•
Use only the specified type of AC adaptor.
•
Use the AC adaptor only with the device specified for it.
•
Do not plug the power cord into an outlet with the wrong voltage rating.
•
Do not plug into an overloaded extension cord or power outlet.
•
Do not cover the power cord with a blanket or other material during use,
and keep it away from heating devices.
•
Do not place heavy objects on the power cord and do not leave it
bundled during use.
•
Do not subject a power cord to heat or attempt to modify it, and avoid
damaging it.
•
Do not subject the power cord to excessive bending, twisting, or pulling.

Storage and Operation Locations
Do not store or use the product in any of the locations described
below.
Doing so creates the risk of fire and electric shock.
•
Areas subjected to large amounts of moisture and dust
•
Food preparation areas, near a humidifier, or in areas where the product
is exposed to oil smoke or water vapor
•
Near a heating device, on an electric carpet, in a location exposed to
direct sunlight, in a car parked outside, or any other area where the
product is subjected to high temperatures.
Do not place the product on an unsteady platform, on a high shelf,
or in any other unstable location.
Dropping and tipping over create the risk of personal injury.
Do not place heavy objects on the product.

Abnormalities (Smoke, Odor, Heat Generation, etc.)
Do not use the product if it is emitting smoke, odor, heat, or
exhibiting any other abnormality. Do not use the product after it has
been dropped or otherwise damaged.

the steps below.
1. Turn off power.
2. If you are using an AC adaptor, unplug its power plug from the
power outlet.
3. Contact your original retailer or a CASIO Service Center.
Disassembly and Modification
Do not attempt any disassembly or modification. For any internal
inspection, adjustment, or repair, contact your original retailer or a
CASIO Service Center.
Doing so creates the risk of electric shock, burn injury, and personal injury.
Suffocation and Choking Risks
Do not place any plastic bag that comes with the product over your
head or in your mouth.
Plastic bags create the risk of suffocation when placed over the head,
when swallowed, etc.
Particular care is required in areas where young children are present.

Avoiding Water and Foreign Matter
Do not allow water, other liquids (sports drinks, seawater, animal
or pet urine, etc.), or foreign objects (metal fragments, etc.) to get
into the product or the AC adaptor. Should any such matter get into
the product, immediately perform the steps below.
Continued use creates the risk of fire and electric shock.
1. Turn off power.
2. If you are using an AC adaptor, unplug its power plug from the
power outlet.
3. Contact your original retailer or a CASIO Service Center.
Do not locate a flower vase or other liquid container on top of or
next to the product or AC adaptor.
Liquid spilling from a container creates the risk of fire and electric shock.
In the case of a lightning storm, do not touch the device plugged
into the power outlet.
Lightning creates the risk of electric shock.
Effect on Other Electronic Devices
When using the product in a medical facility or aircraft, follow the
instructions of local personnel and crew concerning use of such
devices.
Do not use the product in an area where use of such devices is
prohibited.
Electromagnetic waves and other signals emitted by this product may
affect measuring instruments and create the risk of accident.
Do not use the product in the vicinity of high-precision electronic
equipment or any electronic equipment that handles weak signals.
Doing so can cause misoperation and other problems in the electronic
equipment, and creates the risk of accident.
Keep this product away from the chest area of any individual fitted
with a cardiac pacemaker.
Cardiac pacemakers and similar devices can be affected by
electromagnetism. Should anyone fitted with a cardiac pacemaker or
other medical device ever experience any abnormality, move the product
away and contact a physician.

Microwave Ovens
Do not affix labels to any container that will be used for heating in
a microwave oven.
The label material includes metal fragments. Heating in a microwave oven
creates the risk of fire and burn injury. It can also cause deformation of the
container to which the label is affixed.
Battery Precautions
Observe the precautions below. Failure to do so can cause a battery
to rupture, creating the risk of fire, personal injury, and soiling of
nearby objects by leaking fluid.
•
Do not try to take a battery apart and never allow a battery to become
shorted.
•
Do not charge a non-rechargeable battery.
•
Do not mix old and new batteries.
•
Do not mix different battery types.
•
Do not expose a battery to heat or throw it into fire.
•
Use only the specified type of battery.
•
Load a battery with its poles (plus (+) and minus (-)) facing correctly.
•
If you do not plan to use the product for a long time, remove the battery.
•
Replace the battery as soon as possible after it goes dead.
•
Do not use a battery whose covering has been removed.
Do not use a leaking battery.
Doing so creates the risk of fire and electric shock. Immediately stop using
the product and contact your original retailer or a CASIO Service Center.
Connections
Connect only specified devices and items to connectors.
Connecting to other devices and items creates the risk of fire and electric
shock.

AC Adaptor
Observe the precautions below in order to avoid AC adaptor fire
and electric shock.
•
Insert the power plug into the outlet as far as it will go.
•
After use, unplug the power plug from the power outlet.
•
When unplugging the power plug, do not pull on the power cord. Grasp
the plug.
•
If you do not plan to use the product for a long time, unplug from the
power outlet.
•
At least once a year, unplug the power plug from the power outlet and
use a dry cloth to wipe away any dust buildup from the area between
the prongs of the plug.
•
Do not use detergent when cleaning the power cord, especially the
power plug and jack parts.
High Temperature Warning
Avoid touching the print head and the metal parts around it, all of
which can become very hot.
Doing so creates the risk of burn injury.
Battery Precautions
•
Observe the precautions below. Failure to do so can cause the battery
to explode or leak flammable liquid or gas.
•
Use only the type of battery that is specified for this product.
•
Do not burn a battery or dispose of it in an incinerator, or by mechanical
crushing or cutting.
•
Do not subject a battery to excessively high or low temperatures during use,
storage, or transport.
•
Do not subject a battery to excessively low barometric pressure during use,
storage, or transport.

Precautions During Use
To ensure that your printer provides you with the many years of operation for
which it is designed, be sure to note the important precautions described
below.
•
Avoid using the printer in any location where any of the following is present:
exposure to direct sunlight, high humidity, static electric charge, extreme
temperature fluctuations, extreme temperatures. The operating temperature
range of the printer is: 10°C to 35°C (50°F to 95°F).
•
Do not subject the printer to strong impact.
•
Do not allow paper clips or pins to get into the printer.
•
Do not forcibly pull tape out of or push it back into the printer.
•
Do not allow cut tape to accumulate around the tape outlet. Tape blocking
the tape outlet may cause the tape to jam. Such conditions can cause errors,
interfere with proper tape cutting, or other malfunctions. Use tweezers or a
cotton swab to remove tape cuttings as required.
•
Dirt or other foreign matter adhering to the printer head can cause horizontal
stripes with missing dots on printed tapes. If this happens, clean the print
head and the rubber roller as described in “Cleaning” (Page 32).
•
Using the printer in a location exposed to strong direct sunlight can cause
malfunction of the printer’s internal light sensor, resulting in display of error
messages.
•
In order to ensure best printer function and stability, always use only genuine
CASIO tape cartridges. Use of a non-CASIO tape cartridge can harm your
printer, result in poor printing quality, and cause other problems that can
permanently affect the printer’s ability to perform at the level for which it was
designed. Also note that problems caused by use of a non-CASIO tape
cartridge are not covered by the printer’s warranty, so any charges required
for servicing and repair must be borne by you.
■ Precautions When Using Bluetooth Functions
•
Because this printer uses wireless communication, it may affect or be
affected by nearby equipment.
Frequencies used
This printer uses frequencies in the 2.4 GHz band that may also be used by
other wireless equipment.
To prevent radio interference with other wireless equipment, note the following
when using this printer.

This printer includes built-in wireless devices for a low-power data
communications system.
Other equipment that operates in the frequency band being used includes
industrial, scientific and medical equipment such as microwave ovens, along
with other wireless stations of the same type, in-plant wireless stations for
mobile object identification that require a permit and are used in facilities such
as factory production lines, specific low-power wireless stations that do not
require a permit, and amateur wireless stations (hereinafter referred to
collectively as “other wireless stations”).
•
Check that there are no other wireless stations operating nearby before
using the printer.
•
If any radio interference occurs between this printer and other wireless
stations, immediately move the printer to another location or stop using the
printer.
•
If any other difficulties arise, such as radio wave interference, contact your
original retailer or a CASIO Service Center.
Using This Printer as a Wireless Device
The wireless function in this product should be used within the limitations stated
in this User’s Guide.
CASIO COMPUTER CO., LTD. accepts no liability whatsoever for any
damages arising from other uses of this product.
Magnetism, electrostatic charge and radio interference
Do not use this product in locations exposed to magnetism, electrostatic
charge or radio interference, such as close to a microwave oven. In some
environments, it may not be possible to receive radio waves.
Also, using this product close to a device that uses radio waves in the 2.4 GHz
band may result in lower processing speeds in both devices.

Personal information is the name, address, phone number, and date of birth
information that can be used to identify a particular individual.
The label showing the ratings for this product is located under the cover.

Installing the App
This printer creates labels using the LABEL DESIGN MAKER label printing
app.
Follow the instructions on the page shown below to install LABEL DESIGN
MAKER on your smartphone.

Power Supply
When using the printer, you can use either the specified AC adaptor or third-
party alkaline batteries as the power source.
•
Be sure to read “Safety Precautions” (Page 4) before using the printer.
Operation Using the AC Adaptor
■ Connecting the AC Adaptor
1. Plug the AC adaptor plug into
the AC adaptor connection
terminal of the printer.
2. Connect the power cord to the
AC adaptor.
3. Plug the power cord into a
household power outlet.
Important!
•
Be sure to plug the AC adaptor into a normal household power outlet.
•
Do not use adaptors other than the specified AC adaptor.
■ Disconnecting the AC Adaptor
1. Press until the LED indicator turns off indicating that the
power is off.
2. Unplug the AC adaptor from the power outlet and the printer.
Important!
•
Do not disconnect the AC adaptor while printing. Doing so may cause a fault.
•
Do not touch the AC adaptor plug during communication. Factors such as
static electricity may interrupt communication.
•
When connecting or disconnecting the AC adaptor while the printer is in the
“batteries loaded” status, always turn the printer off first.

Operation Using Batteries
Important!
•
Always ensure that all 6 batteries are new AA-size alkaline batteries. The
use of batteries other than those specified or a combination of new and old
batteries could result in battery characteristics that do not match the printer’s
specifications. This may cause printer malfunctions or cause the batteries to
fail prematurely.
1. Remove the battery cover on
the bottom of the printer.
Do not apply undue force to the
battery cover (bend it backwards,
etc.). Doing so may cause a fault.
2. Load the batteries.
Note the battery polarity (⊕ and ⊖)
when loading the batteries.
3. Re-attach the battery cover.

Important!
•
Using batteries that are low on charge may cause the printer to shut down
during printing. It is recommended that you use the specified AC adaptor.
•
Due to the particular characteristics of the batteries, their capacity may
degrade when used at temperatures lower than 10°C. This may make it more
likely that the LED indicator will light to show that the batteries are low on
charge. If this occurs, move the printer to an environment that is within the
printer’s operating temperature range (10°C to 35°C) before using it.
•
When connecting or disconnecting the AC adaptor while the printer is in the
“batteries loaded” status, always turn the printer off first.
Battery Life
Under standard printing conditions, the printer will print approximately 4 rolls
of 18 mm tape cartridge.
•
The battery life will be shorter if you are printing images or text with large
areas of black, if you are printing at low temperatures, or if you loaded
batteries into the printer and left it unused for a long period.
•
When the printer is not in use, the batteries must be replaced at least once
every 2 years.

Turning the Power On and Off
This section describes how to turn the printer on and off.
■ Turning the printer on
Pressing on the top of the printer turns the printer on and the LED indicator
lights green.
•
To turn the printer on, you must first either connect the AC adaptor or load
third-party batteries. See “Power Supply” (Page 16) for details.
■ Turning the printer off
Press on the top of the printer until the LED indicator turns off indicating that
the printer is turned off.
Auto Power Off Function
If you leave the printer turned on without using it, it shuts down automatically
after approximately 60 minutes when the AC adaptor is used or after
approximately 6 minutes when batteries are used. This is referred to as the
Auto Power Off function.
To resume using the printer, press .

Installing/Removing Tape
Cartridges
To print labels, you need a tape cartridge.
Use either the tape cartridge supplied with the printer or one sold separately.
•
This printer supports the 6 mm, 9 mm, 12 mm and 18 mm tape widths.
Important!
•
To replace the tape cartridge, set the printer set down on its side.
Installing Tape Cartridges
1. Press until the LED indicator turns off indicating that the
power is off.
2. Set the printer down on its
side, press on the area on the
side marked “PUSH” and
raise the cover.
3. Remove the cover.

Important!
•
When removing the stopper, carefully and slowly raise it straight upwards. Pulling
on the stopper with strong force can cause the stopper to break and leave part of
it inside one of the tape wheels, which can cause tape rotation problems and faulty
printing.
5. Check the condition of the tape and the ink ribbon.
Important!
•
Tape once pulled out of the cartridge cannot be pushed back in.
•
Do not apply excessive force when pulling on the tape. Doing so can break or
otherwise damage the ink ribbon.
•
Loading a tape cartridge whose ink ribbon is slack can cause cutting of the ink
ribbon and other malfunctions.
Take up any slack in the ink ribbon.
•
If there is slack in the ink ribbon, insert a pencil or
similar object into the upper right wheel (“a” in the
nearby illustration) and rotate in the direction
indicated by the arrow. Rotate until the lower left
wheel (“b” in the illustration) starts to rotate. Note that
the tape does not move along with the ink ribbon at
this time.

6. Set the tape cartridge in place.
Taking care not to pull on the ink ribbon, pass the tape and ink ribbon between
the print head and the rubber roller (illustration below). Press down on the tape
cartridge until it clicks securely into place.
If the tape is not loaded correctly, a tape-related error message will appear and
you may not be able to print. If this occurs, load the tape again.

•
An improperly loaded tape cartridge can cause the ribbon to break.

7. Re-attach the cover.

Engage the cover hooks with the printer locations marked “a” and close the
cover. Close the cover until it clicks into place.
•
Once you have loaded the tape cartridge, do not pull the tape out or try to
push it back in.

Removing Tape Cartridges
1. Press until the LED indicator turns off indicating that the
power is off.
2. Remove the cover.

See steps 2-3 in “Installing Tape Cartridges” (Page 20) for details.
3. Remove the tape cartridge.

Because the printer head is hot just after printing, allow ample time before
removing the tape cartridge.

Connecting to a Smartphone
Connect the printer to a smartphone using Bluetooth. This offers a simple way
to connect with no need for pairing.
Before connecting, you must first either connect the AC adaptor to the printer
or load third-party batteries. See “Power Supply” (Page 16) for details.
Launching the App for the First Time
1. Press to turn the printer on.
•
The LED indicator on the printer turns on.
2. Activate Bluetooth on your smartphone.
3. Launch LABEL DESIGN MAKER on the smartphone.
•
If you are launching the app for the first time, the “End User Software License
Agreement” appears.
4. Read the End User Software License Agreement carefully and
then tap “Agree”.
•
The printer model selection screen appears.
5. Select “KL-BT1” and tap “Finish”.
•
“First, connect to the label printer.” appears.
•
If you are asked to allow the use of Bluetooth, tap “OK” to allow it.
6. Tap “Connect now”.
•
To connect later, tap “Connect later”.
•
“Found printers.” appears, along with the “KL-BT1_******” printer name.
•
If the location information setting is required, tap “Settings” and enable
location information.
•
If access to location information is requested, allow it.
•
If “Printer not found.” appears, tap the “Retry” button and search for the printer
again.

7. Tap the “KL-BT1_******” printer name to select this printer.
•
The printer name is displayed in the “product name” + “product-specific 6-
digit alphanumeric code”.
•
When this printer is selected, the LED indicator on the printer flashes several
times.
•
When the connection is completed, “Printer connection established.”

Launching the App Subsequently
1. Press to turn the printer on.
•
The LED indicator on the printer turns on.
2. Launch LABEL DESIGN MAKER on the smartphone.
•
The home screen appears.
3. Tap ( ) in the Settings tab.
•
The “Settings” screen appears.
4. Tap “Model”.
•
The printer model selection screen appears.
5. Select “KL-BT1” and tap “Back”.
•
If you are asked to allow the use of Bluetooth, tap “OK” to allow it.
6. Tap “Print Settings”.
•
The “Print Settings” screen appears.
7. Tap the printer icon ( ).
•
“Found printers.” appears, along with the “KL-BT1_******” printer name.
•
If the location information setting is required, tap “Settings” and enable
location information.
•
If access to location information is requested, allow it.
•
If “Printer not found.” appears, tap the “Retry” button and search for the printer
again.

Tap the “KL-BT1_******” printer name to select this printer.

Printing
This printer creates files for printing using the LABEL DESIGN MAKER label
printing app and prints those files.
All the steps in this process are performed in the app.
Printing Precautions
•
Tape fed out during printing should not be touched until printing is completed.
•
When printing long labels or consecutive print jobs, use a tape cartridge with
plenty of remaining tape to ensure that the tape does not run out during
printing.
When a cartridge has run out of tape, replace it with a new cartridge rather
than leaving the empty cartridge in the printer.
•
Do not allow cut tape to accumulate around the tape outlet. Tape blocking
the tape outlet may cause the tape to jam. Such blockages may cause faults
such as printer errors or incorrect tape cutting, so tape scraps should be
removed using tweezers or cotton buds.
•
Names and addresses created in the app are personal information and
should be handled with appropriate care.
Printing
1. Launch the app and display the label to be printed.
2. Tap the printer icon ( ).
•
The “Print list” screen appears.
3. Tap “Start printing”.
•
Printing begins.
4.
Once printing is completed, press the tape cutting button.
•
Depending on the terminals using the communications system, printing may
take some time.
•
If the LED indicator continuously flashes red, check the tape cartridge.
•
If large amounts of black text are printed at a time, it may not be printed clearly.
Reduce the number of labels printed or wait some time before printing. You
can also try reducing the density.
•
Do not press the tape cutting button during printing. Doing so may cause a
tape jam.

Changing the Settings
■ Changing the Print Density
1. Tap the Settings tab ( ) in the app’s top screen.
•
To change the setting while editing labels, tap the Settings icon ( ) in the
app screen. The “Print Settings” screen appears. Proceed to step 3.
•
The “Settings” screen appears.
2. Tap “Print Settings”.

3. Slide the “Print Density (Density)”

Higher numbers denote darker printing.
■ Setting Marks for Cutting Labels (Cut Marks)
This setting specifies whether cut marks are added when you plan to cut printed
labels with scissors.
•
The default setting when the app is installed is not to add cut marks.
•
Depending on the type of tape used, cut marks may not be printed clearly.
1. Tap the Settings tab ( ) in the app’s top screen.
•
To change the setting while editing labels, tap the Settings icon ( ) in the
app screen. The “Print Settings” screen appears. Proceed to step 3.
•
The “Settings” screen appears.
2. Tap “Print Settings”.
•
The “Print Settings” screen appears.
3. Tap the “Cut mark printing” switch.
•
Set this switch to ON to add cut marks and to OFF to print without cut marks.

Canceling Printing
To interrupt printing in progress, press on the printer during printing.
•
Once printing has stopped, feed the tape out and then manually cut the tape.
See “Advancing the Tape” (Page 29) for information on how to feed tape
out and “Cutting the Tape” (Page 30) for information on how to cut tape.
Advancing the Tape
You can feed out a margin of blank tape before and after printing.
This is performed in the app.
1. Tap the Settings tab ( ) in the app’s top screen.
•
To feed tape through while editing labels, tap the Settings icon ( ) in the app
screen. The “Print Settings” screen appears. Proceed to step 3.
•
The “Settings” screen appears.

Cutting the Tape
Important!
•
Check that all the printing has finished before cutting the tape. Pressing the tape
cutting button during printing could cause a tape jam or damage the printer.
Using iron-on fabric tape or heat-shrinkable tube
Iron-on fabric tape and heat-shrinkable tube are specially treated
tapes.
To cut such tapes, use scissors or a similar tool as described below. (For
iron-on fabric tape, always use sewing scissors designed for cutting
fabrics, etc.)
Note that cutting iron-on fabric tape or heat-shrinkable tube in the
printer will shorten the life of the cutter unit. Please bear this in mind.

Affixing a Label to a Surface
1. If required, use scissors or some other implement to trim the
label to the desired size or shape.
2. Peel off the backing of the label and affix the label to the desired
surface.

Bending a corner of the label makes the backing easier to peel off.

Removing a label from a surface where it was affixed may cause adhesive
residue to remain on the surface.
Important!
Do not try to affix a label to the objects or at the locations described below.

On a surface exposed to direct sunlight or rain
•
On the body of a person or animal
•
On a utility pole, on a fence or structure not owned by you, etc.
•
On a container used for heating in a microwave oven
Note that touching the adhesive surface of the label with fingers or hands that
are coated with hand cream or a similar material may make the label more likely
to peel off.

Special plastic (silicon, polypropylene, etc.) surfaces

Cleaning
Soiling on the printer head or rubber roller may result in impaired label printing
quality. Use the procedure below to clean the printer head and rubber roller.
Using Cotton Buds
Important!
•
Use a soft implement such as a cotton bud to clean the printer head and
rubber roller. We recommend using the slimmest available cotton buds.
1. Set the printer down on its side and remove the cover.
•
See steps 2-3 in “Installing Tape Cartridges” (Page 20) for information on
how to remove the cover.
•
If a tape cartridge is loaded in the printer, remove it.
Important!
•
Because the printer head is hot during and immediately after printing, wait
sufficient time before removing the tape cartridge.
2. Wipe the surfaces of the printer head and rubber roller clean
with a cotton bud moistened with alcohol.
Wipe the brown section of the printer head that makes contact with the rubber
roller (the area between the dotted lines) particularly firmly.

Cleaning the Exterior of the Printer
•
Use a soft cloth moistened with water to clean the exterior of the printer. Be
sure to completely wring out all excess liquid from the cloth before wiping.
Never use benzene, alcohol, thinners, or other volatile agents, which can
damage the printer.

experience problems with printer operation. If, for any reason, you cannot find
the solution to your problem here, contact your original retailer or a CASIO
