Blade Care
_ ARNING:Whenremovingcuttingblade
for sharpeningor replacement,protectyour
handswith a pairof heavygloves or use a heavyrag
to holdblade.
1. Disconnectsparkplugwirefromsparkplug.Turn
moweron itsside makingsurethatthe airfilterand
the carburetorare up.
2. Removebolt,bellbladesupport,blade,and blade
adapterfrom the enginecrankshaft.See Figure5-3.
3. The bladecan be sharpenedwith a fileor on a
grindingwheel.Donot attemptto sharpenthe blade
while it is still on the mower.Whensharpeningblade,
followoriginalangleof grind. Removemetalfrom the
heavysideandgrindcuttingedgesequallyto keep
bladebalanced.Balancethe blade on a round shaft
screwdriverto checkfor balance.
_ ARNING:Anunbalanced bladewill cause
excessivevibrationwhen rotating at high
speeds.It may causedamageto mower,and could
break causingpersonal injury.
4. Lubricatetheenginecrankshaftandthe inner surface
of the blade adapterwith lightoil. Slide the blade
adapteronto the enginecrankshaft.Placethe blade
on theadaptersuch thatthe sideof the blademarked
"Bottom"(or with part number)facesthe groundwhen
the mowerisin the operatingposition.Makesurethat
bladeis alignedand seatedon bladeadapterflanges.
5. Placebladebell supporton the blade.Align notches
on the bladebell supportwith smallholesin blade.
Replacehex boltandtightenhex boltto torque:450
in.Ibs. rain.,600 in.Ibs.max.
Toensuresafeoperationof yourmower,periodically
checkthe bladeboltfor correcttorque.
Changing the Belt
1. Removetwoshoulderscrewssecuringfrontdrive
coverto mowerdeck.Referto Figure5-4. Press
inwardonsidesof frontdrivecoverand releasetabs
that secureitto the heightadjusterbrackets.Remove
drivecoverfrommower.

Loosenscrewholdingbelttensionspringto
transmission.SeeFigure5-4. Do not removescrew
completely.As youloosenit,tensionon the belt will be
released.
Pushtransmissionup a littleandslidebelt offthe
transmissionpulley.Lift mowerto accessbeltfrom
undersideof mower.Slide beltoff of enginepulleyand
aroundthe blade.SeeFigure5-5.
Replacewithnewbelt,workingaroundblade.Make
sure belt isfirmly seatedon enginepulleywhilepulling
fromthe othersideand slidingit aroundthetransmis-
sion pulley.Tightenscrewloosenedearlierto secure
belt tensionspringto the transmission.Reassemble
frontdrivecover.

WARNING
When removing
the cutting blade
for sharpening or
replacementor
when sliding the belt
around it, protect
your hands with a
pair of heavy gloves
or use a heavy rag to
hold the blade.
An unbalanced blade
will cause excessive
vibration when rotat=
ing at high speeds. It
may cause damage
to mower, and could
break causing per-
sonal injury.
