Jump Starting Instructions
Safety Check List
AlwaysPerformthisStepBeforeUsetoEnsureSafeOperation.
1. Checktomakesurethattheclampsandcablesareingoodworkingorder. Signs
ofdamageinclude,butarenotlimitedtothefollowing:
-Burnmarksonthejaws
-Damagedclamphandles
-Damagedclampsprings
-Damagedcableswherecopperwiringmaybeexposed(insulationjacket
deteriorated,cutormissing)
VerifyingthesesimplecheckpointsbeforeeveryusewillkeepyourBoosterCablessafe
touseandincreaseitsservicelife.
Note: Both the battery to be jumped and the booster source must be of the same
voltage (6 or 12V, etc.).
Note: Power sources other than batteries should not exceed 15V for use with 12V
systems or 8V for use with a 6V system.
Note: Position the “host” vehicle, or other power source, adjacent to the “disabled”
vehicle with the discharged battery so that booster cables can be connected easily
between both vehicles. Make certain that the vehicles do not touch each other.
1.Turnoffallelectricalloadsandsettheparkingbrakeonallvehicles.Place
automatictransmissionvehiclesin“PARK”andmanualtransmissionvehiclesin
“NEUTRAL”.
2.Besurethattheventcapsaretightandlevelonbothbatteries.Placeadamp
clothoveranyventcapsoneachbattery,makingcertainitisclearoffanblades,
beltsandothermovingparts.
3.Determinewhetherthedischarged(dead)batteryhasthenegative(-)orthe
positive(+)terminalconnectedtotheground.Thegroundleadisconnectedto
theengineblock,thevehicleframe,orsomeothergoodmetallicground.The
batteryterminalconnectedtothestarteristheonethatisnotgrounded.(All
vehiclesmanufacturedintheU.S.A.after1955havethenegativebatteryterminal
grounded.AllEuropeanandAsianpassengervehiclesmanufacturedafter1971
havethenegativebatteryterminalgrounded.)
4.Onanegativegroundsystem,connectthepositive(POS,+)cabletothepositive
(pos,+)terminalsofbothvehiclebatteries(hostanddisabledvehicles).Donot
allowtheclampstotouchanyvehiclepartotherthanthebatterypositive(POS,
+)terminal.
5.Onanegativegroundsystem,connectoneendofthenegative(NEG,-)cableto
thenegative(NEG,-)terminalofthehostvehiclebattery.Connecttheotherend
ofthenegative(NEG,-)cabletoavehiclegroundonthedisabledvehicle(engine
block,vehicleframeorotherheavy-gauge,non-moving,unpaintedmetalpart–
neverconnecttocarburetor,fuellines,orsheetmetalbodyparts).Again,donot
allowtheclampstotoucheachotheroracommonconductor.
6.Startthehostvehicle’sengineandallowtoidle.
