Changing the Engine Oil
Ifthe enginehas beenrecentlyrun,the engine,mufflerandsur-
roundingmetalsurfaceswill be hotandcan causeburnsto the skin.
Exercisecautionto avoidburns.
NOTE:The oilfiltershouldbe changedat everyoil changeinterval.To
completeanoil change,proceedasfollows:
1. With engineOFF butstillwarm,disconnectspark plugwire and
keepit awayfromsparkplug.
2. Removetheoil fill cap/dipstickfromthe oil fill tube.See Figure20.

1. Removethe airfiltercover.
2. To removethe air filter,lift theendof the filter.SeeFigure21.

3. Disconnectthe oil drainhosefrom the side of theengine.
4. Turnand removethe oildraincap.Carefullylowerthe quick oil
drainintoanapprovedcontainer.
5. After theoil hasdrained,installthe oildrain cap. Attachthe oil
drainhoseto the sideof the engine.
Usedoil is a hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
Donotdiscardwith householdwaste.Checkwith yourlocalauthori-
tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities.
6. Reconnectsparkplug wire.
Air Cleaner
if filters, or coversarenot installedcorrectlyseriousinjuryor death
could resultfrom backfire.Do notattemptto startthe enginewith
them removed.
Do notuse pressurizedair or solventsto cleanthe aircleaner
cartridge.
3. Removethe pre-cleanerfrom the filter.
4. To loosendebris,gentlytap thefilter on a hardsurface.If thefilter
isexcessivelydirty, replacewitha newfilter.
5. Washthe pre-cleanerin liquiddetergentand water.Allowit to
thoroughlyair dry.Do not oil the pre-cleaner.
6. Assemblethe dry pre-cleanerto the filter.
7. Installthe filterintothe enginebaseand pushdownuntilthe filter
snapsinplace.
8. Installthe cover.
Spark Plug
1. Cleanarea aroundthe sparkplugbase. Donot sandblastspark
plug.Sparkplug shouldbecleanedby scrapingor wirebrushing
andwashingwith a commercialsolvent
2. Removeandinspectthe sparkplug.Checkgapto makesureit is
setat .030".SeeFigure22.
