INSTALLATIONS IN AREAS WHERE FLAMMABLE LIQ-

UIDS (VAPORS) ARE LIKELY TO BE PRESENT OR

STORED (GARAGES, STORAGE, AND UTILITY AREAS

ETC): F ammable liquids (such as gasoline, solvents,

propane (LP) or butane, etc.), all of which emit flammable

vapors, may be improperly stored or used in such areas.

The gaswater heater pilot light or main bumer can ignite

such vapors. The resulting flashback and fire can cause

death or serious burns to anyone in the area, as well as

property damage.

If installation in such areas is your only option, then the

installation must be accomplished in a way that the pilot

flame and main burner flame are elevated from the floor

at least 18 inches. While this may reduce the chances of

flammable vapors from a floor spill being ignited, gasoline

and other flammable substancesshould never be stored or

used in the same room or area containing a gas water

heater or other open flame or spark producingappliance.

NOTE: Flammable vapors may be drawn by air current

from other areas ofthe structure to the appliance.

AWARNING

If this water heater will be used in beauty shops,barber

shops, cleaning establishments, or self-servica laundries

with dry cleaning equipment, it is imperative that the

water heater or water heaters be installed so that com-

bustion and ventilation air be taken from outside these

areas. Refer to the "Facts to Consider About the

Location" section of this manual and also the latest edi-

tion of the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1, also

referred to as NFPA 54 for specifics provided concerning

air required.

AWARNING

At the time of manufacture this water heater was provid-

ed with a combination temperature-pressures relief valve

certified by _nationally recognized testing laboratory

that maintains periodic inspection of production of listed

equipment ol"materials, as meeting the requirements for

Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot

Water Supply Systems, and the atest edition of ANSI

Z21.22 end the code requirements of ASME. If replaced,

the valve must meet the requirements of local codes, hut

not less than a combination temperature and pressure

relief valve certified as meeting the requirements for

Relief Valves and Automatic Gas Shutoff Devices for Hot

Water Supply Systems, ANSI Z21.22 by a nationally rec-

ognized testing laboratory that maintains periodic

inspection of production of listed equipment or

materials.

The valve must be marked with a maximum set pressure

not to exceed the marked hydrostatic working pressure

of the water heater (150 Ibs./sq. in.) and a discharge

capacity not less than the water heater input rate as

shown on the model rating plate. (Electric heaters -

watts divided by 1000 x 3415 equal BTU/Hr. rate.)

Your local jurisdictional authority, while mandating the

use of a tempereture.pressure relief valve complying

with ANSI Z21.22 and ASME, may require a valve mode]

different from the one furnished with the water heater.

Compliance with such local requirements must be satis-

fied by the installer or end user oftbe water heater with

a locally prescribed temperature-pressure relief valve

installed in the designated opening in the water heater in

_lece ofthe factory fumished valve.

For safe operation of the water heater, the relief valve

must not be removed from it's designated opening or

plugged.

The temperature-pressure relief valve must be installed

directly into the fitting of the water heater designated for

the relief valve. Position the valve downward and provide

tubing sothat any discharge will exit only within 6 inches

above, or at any distance below the structural floor. Be

certain that no contact is made with any live electrical

tort. The discharge opening must not be blocked or

reduced in size under any circumstances. Excessive

length, over 30 feet, or useof more than four elbows can

cause restriction and reduce the discharge capacity of

the valve.

No valve or other obstruction is to be placed between

the relief valve and the tank. Do not connect tubing

directly to discharge drain unlessa 6 air gap isprovided.

To prevent bodily injury, hazard to life, or property dam-

age, the relief valve must be allowed to discharge water

in quantities should circumstances demand. If the dis-

charge pipe is not connected to a drain or other suitable

means, the water flow may cause property damage.

The Discharge Pipe:

• Must not be smaller in size than the outlet pipe size of

the valve, or have any reducing couplings or other

restrictions.

Must not be plugged or blocked.

Must be of material listed for hot water distribution.

Must be installed so as to allow complete drainage of

both the temperature-pressure relief valve, and the dis-

charge pipe.

Must terminate at an adequate drain.

Must not have any valve between the relief valve and

tan_

Safety Precautions

AWARNING

A gas water heater cannot operate properly without the

correct amount of air for combustion. Do not install in a

confined area such a closet, unless you provide air as

shown in the "Facts to Consider About the Location" sec-

tion. Never obstruct the flow of ventilation air. If you have

any doubts or questions at all, call your gas company.

Failure to provide the proper amount of combustion air

can result in a fire or explosion and can cause DEATH

SERIOUS BODILY INJURY,OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

AWARNING

This water heater must not be installed directly on car-

peting. Carpeting must be protected by a metal or wood

panel beneath the appliance extending beyond the full

width and depth of the appliance by at least 3 inches

(76.2mm) in any direction, or if the appliance is installed

in an alcove or closet, the entire floor must be covered by

the panel. Failure to heed this warning may result in a

fire hazard.

AWARNING

HOTTER WATER CAN SCALD: Water heaters are

intended to produce hot water. Water heated to a tem-

perature which will satisfy clothes washing, dish washing,

and other sanitizing needs can scald and permanently

injure you upon contact. Some people are more likely to

be permanently injured by hot water than others. These

include the elderly, children, the infirm, or physically/men-

tally handicapped. If anyone using hot water in your home

fits into one of these groups or if there is a local code or

state law requiring a certain temperature water at the hot

water tap, then you must take specialprecautions. In addi-

tion to using the lowest possibletemperature setting that

satisfiesyour hot water needs, a means such as a mixing

valve, should be usedat the hot water taps used by these

people or at the water heater. Mixing valves are available

at plumbing supply or hardware stores. Follow manufac-

turers instructions for installation of the valves. Before

changingthe factory setting on the thermostat, read the

"Temperature Regulation" section in this manual.

AWARNING

Soot build-up indicates a problem that requires corroc-

tion before further use. Turn "OFF" gasto water heater

and leave "OFF" until repairs are made, because failure

to correct the cause of the sooting can result in a fire or

explosion causing DEATH, SERIOUS BODILY INJURY,

OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

AWARNING

VENT DAMPERS - Any vent damper, whether it isoperat-

ed thermally or otherwise must be removed if its use

inhibitsproper drafting of the water heater.

Thermally Operated Vent Dampers: Gas-fired water

heaters having thermal efficiency in excess of 80% may

troduce a relatively low flue gas temperature. Such tem-

mraturas may nut be high enough to properly open ther-

mally operated vent dampers. This would cause spillageof

flue gasesand may causecarbon monoxide poisoning.

Vent dampers must bear evidence of certification as com-

plying with the latest edition of American National

Standard ANSI Z21.68 (ANSI Z21.66 & 67, respectively,

cover electrically and mechanically actuated vent

dampers). Before installation of any vent damper, consult

tour local Sears Service Center or the gasutility for fur-

ther information.

,_WARNING

• The appliance and its individual shutoff"valve must be dis-

connected from the gas supply piping system during any

pressure testing of the gas system at test pressures in

excessof ½ pound per square inch(3.SkPa).

•The appliance must be isolated from the gassupply pip-

ing system by closing its individual manual shutoff valve

during any pressure testing of the gas supply piping sys--

tom at test pressures equal or lessthan ½ pound per

square inch (3.SkPa).

AWARNING

BEFORE LIGHTING [PROPANE (L.P.) GAS WATER

HEATERS]: Propane (L.R) gas is heavier than air. Should

there be a leak in the system, the gaswill settle near the

ground. Basements, crawl spaces, skirted areas under

mobile homes (even when ventilated), closets and areas

below ground levelwill serve as pockets for the accumula-

tion of this gas. Before attempting to light or relight the

water heater's pilot or turning on a nearby electrical light

switch, be absolutely sure there is no accumulated gas in

the area. Search for odor of gas by sniffingat ground level

in the vicinity of the appliance. If odor is detected, follow

steps indicated at "For Your Safety" on the cover pageof

this manual then leave the premises.

h, WARNING

Chemical vapor corrosion of the flue and vent system

may occur if air for combustion contains certain chemical

vapors. Spray can propellants, cleaning solvents,refrigera-

tor and air conditioner refrigerants, swimming pool

chemicals, calcium and sodium chloride, waxes, bleach,

and process chemicals are typical compounds which are

potentially corrosive.

AWARNING

Obstructed or deteriorated vent systems may present a

serious health Hskor asphyxiaton.

AWARNING I

The water heater with draft hood installed must be prop. I

erly vented to a chimney which terminates outdoors.

Never operate the water heater unlessit isvented to the I

outdoors and has adequate air supply to avoid risks of

improper operation, explosion or asphyxiation.

_WARNING

Minimum clearances between the water heater and com-

bustible or non-combustible construction are I" at the

sidesand rear, 4" at the front, and 6" from the vent pipe.

Clearance from the top of the jacket is 18" on most mod-

els. Note that a lesser dimension may be allowed on some

models. Refer to the labe| on the water heater adjaceot to

the gascontrol valve for all clearances,

A CAUTION

WATER HEATERS EVENTUALLY LEAK: Installation of

the water heater must be accomplished in sucha manner

that if the tank or any connections should leak, the flow of

water will not causedamage to the structure. When such

locations cannot be avoided, a suitable drain pan should

be installed under the water heater. Drain pans are avail-

able at your local Sears store. Such a drain pan must be

not greater than 1%inches deep, have a minimum length

and width of at least 2 inches greater than the water

heater dimensions and must be piped to an adequate

drain. The pan must not restrict combustion air flow,

Under no circumstances is the manufacturer or Sears to

be held liable for any water damage in connection with

this water heater.

A WARNING

Do not use this appliance if any part of it has been under I

water. Immediately call a Sears Service Technician to I

_spect the applianceand to replace the gas control or any

_rt of the burner systemwhich hasbeen under water. I

_,WARNING

HYDROGEN GAS: Hydrogen gascanbe produced in ahot

water system that has not been used for a leng period of

time (generally two weeks or more). Hydrogen gas is

extremely flammable and explosive. To prevent the possi-

bility of injury under these conditions, we recommend the

hot water faucet be opened for several minutes at the

kitchen sink before any electrical appliances which are

connected to the hot water system are used(such asa dis-

hwather or washing machine). If hydrogen gas is present,

there will probably be an unusual sound similar to air

escaping through the pipe as the hot water faucet is

opened. There must be no smoking or open flame near

the faucet at the time it isopen.

AWARNING

INSULATING JACKETS: When installing an external

water heater insulation jacket on a gaswater heater:

• DO NOT cover the temperature-pressure relief valve.

• DO Nor put insulation over any part of the top of the

gaswater heater.

• DO NOT put insulation over the gas control valve or gas

control valvelbumer cover, or any access areas to the

burner.

• DO NOT let insulation around the gas water heater to

get within 8 inches of the floor (air must get to the

burner).

• DO NOT cover or remove operating instructions, and

safety related warning labels and materials affixed to the

water heater.

Failure to heed this will result in the possibility of a fire or

explosion.

Installation Instructions

Removing the Old Water Heater

Turn "OFF" the supply the heater.

I If the main gas line shutoff serving all gas appliances is/

used, also shut "OFF" the gasat each appliance. Lea_e alJ|

QTurn "OFF" the water to the water

heater. Some installations require that

the water be turned off to the entire

house,

Check a_mn to make sure the gas supply

is _OFF to the vcater heater. Then dis-

connect the gas supply connection from

the gas control valve.

Attach a hose to the water heater drain

valve and put the other end in a floor

drain or outdoors. Open the water heater

drain valve. Open a nearby hot water

faucet which will relieve pressure in the

water heater and speed draining.

Disconnect the vent pipe from the draft hood where

they connect to the water heater. In most installations

the vent pipe canhe Liftedoff after any screw or other

attached devices are removed. Dispose of the draft

hood. The new water heater has the draft hood which

must be used for proper operation.

a. If you have copper piping to the water

heater, the two copper water pipes can be

cut with a hacksaw approximately 4"

away from where they connect to the

water heater. This will avoid cutting off

the pipes too short. Additional cuts can

be made later if necessary. Disconnect

the temperature-pressure relief valve

drain line. When the water heater is

drained, disconnect the hose from the

drain valve. Close the drain valve. The

water heater is now completely discon-

nected and ready to be removed.

If you have galvanized pipe to the water

heater, loosen the twogalvanized pipes

with a pipe wrench at the union in each

line. Also disconnect the piping remain-

ing to the water heater. These pieces

should be saved since they may be need-

ed when reconnecting the new water

heater. Disconnect the temperature-pres-

sure relief valve drain line. When the

water heater is drained, disconnect the

hose from the drain valve. Close the

drain valve. The water heater is now

completely disconnected and ready to be

removed.

AWARNING

The water passingout of the drain valve may be extremely

hot. To avoid being scalded,make sure all connectionsare

tight and that the water flow is directed away from any

pelTton.

ACAUTION ]

I Mineral buildup or sediment may have accumulated in the|

[ old water heater. This causesthe water heater to be much|

[ heavier than normal and this residue, if spilled out, could}

I cause staining. ]

Facts to Consider About the

Location

You should carefully choose an indoor location for the new

water heater, because the placement is a very important consid-

eration for the safety of the occupants in the building and for

the most economical use of the appliance. This water heater is

not for use in mobile homes or outdoor installation.

Whether replacing an old water heater or putting the water

directly with the space in which the appliances are installed,

through openings not furnished with doors, are considered a

part of the unconfined space.

In unconfined spaces in buildings, infiltration may be adequate

to provide air for combustion, ventilation and dilution of"flue

gases. However, in buildings of tight construction (for example,

weather stripping, heavily insulated, caulked, vapor barrier,etc.),

additional air may need to be provided using the methods

The confined space shall be provided with two permanent

openings communicating directly with an additional room(s)

of sufficient volume so that the combined volume of all

spaces meets the criteria for an unconfined space. The total

input of all gas utilization equipment installed in the com-

bined space shall be considered in making this determination.

Each opening shall have a minimum flee area of one square

inch per 1,000 BTU per hour of the total input rating of all

gas utilization equipment in the confined space, but not less

th,an 100 square inches. One opening shall commence within

12 of the top and one commencing within 12 of the bot-

tom of the enclosure.

1.When directly communicating with the outdoors, each open-

ing shall havea minimum freearea of I squareinch per 4,000

BTU per hour of total input rating of all equipment in the

enclosure. (SeeFigure3.)

2. When communicating with the outdoors through vertical

ducts, each opening shall have a minimum free area of 1

square inch per 4,000 BTU per hour of total input rating of

all equipment in the enclosure. (SeeFigure4.)

4. When ducts are used, they shall be of the same cross-sectional

The minimum short side dimension of rectangular air ducts

shall not be less than 3". (See Figure 5.)

Louvers and Grilles: In calculating free area, consideration

shall be given to the blocking effect of louvers, grilles or

screens protecting openings. Screens used shall not be smaller

than ¼-mesh. If the free area through a design of louver or

grille is known, it should be used in calculating the size open-

ing required to provide the free area specified. If the design

and free area is not known, it may be assumed that wood lou-

vers will be 20-25 percent free area and metal louvers and

grilles will have 60-75 percent free area. Louvers and grilles

shall be f'Lxedin the open position or interlocked with the

equ!pment so that they are opened automatically during

equipment operation,

6. Special Conditions Created by Mechanical Exhaustingor

Fireplaces: Operation of exhaust fans, ventilation systems,

Filling the Water Heater

A CAUTION

Never usethis water heater unlessit iscompletelyfilledwith

water. To preventdamage to the tank,the tank must befilled

with water. Water must flow from the hot water faucet

beforeturning "ON" gasto the water heater,

To fill the water heater with water:

• Close the water heater drain valve by turning the handle to

the right (clockwise). The drain valve is on the lower front of

the water heater.

• Open the cold water supply valve to the water heater.

NOTE: The cold water supply valve must be left open

when the water heater is in use.

• To insure complete filling of the tank, allow air to exit by

opening the nearest hot water faucet. Allow water to run

until a constant flow is obtained. This will let air out of the

water heater and the piping.

• Checkall newwaterpipingforleaks. Repair asneeded.

Installation Checklist

BEFORE LIGHTING THE PILOT:

• Check the gaslines for leaks.

a. Use a soapy water solution. DO NOT test for gas leaks

usinga match or open flame.

b. Brush the soapy water solution on all gas pipes, joints and

fittings.

c. Check for bubbling soap. This means you have a leak.

Turn _OFF" gasandmake the necessary repairs.

d. Recheck for leaks.

e. Rinse off soapy solution and wipe dry.

CHECK FOR LEAKS

Be sure to check all your gas pipes for leaks before lighting your

water heater. Use a soapy water solution, not a match or open

flame. Check the factory gas _ttings after pilot is lit and gas con-

trol knob is still in PILOT pos!tion. Then, check the fittings

when the main burner is turned ON". Use a soapy water solu-

tion for this, too.

Temperature Regulation

Due to the nature of the typical gaswaterheater, the watertem-

_oeraturein certain situations may var_ up to 30°F higher or

wet at the point of usesuch as, bathtuns, showers,sink, etc.

This means that when the temperature adjustment dial is set at

the mark approximating 120°F,the actual watertemperature at

any hot water tap could beas high as 150°F or aslowas90°F.

Any waterheater's intendedpurpose is to heat water.Hot water

is needed for cleaning (bodies, dishes, clothing). Hot water will

present a scaldhazard. Depending on the time element, and the

people involved (norton[adults, children, toddlers, elderly,

infirm, etc.) scalding mayoccurat differenttemperatures.

The thermostat of this waterheater has been factory set at its

lowestposition, to reduce the riskofscald injury. It is adjustable

and must be reset to the desiredtemperature setting. The mark

(A) HOT indicative of approximately 120°F is the preferred

startin_ point. Some states have a requirementfor a lowerset-

ring. Iryou need hotter water, followdirectionsfor temperature

adjustment, but bewareof the warningsin this section.

Service and Adjustment

Tank (Sediment) Cleaning

Sediment build-up on the tank bottom may create varying

amounts of noise, and if left in the tank will cause premature

tank failure. In some water areas, you may not be able to drain

all sediment deposits by simply draining the tank. In these cases

Mag Erad (part no. 23600) can be used to help remove the sedi-

ment deposits. This m_ty be ordered from the ,Sears Service

Center. For ordering, refer to the "Parts Order List section.

Venting System Inspection

At least once a year a visual inspection should be made of the

venting system. You should look for:

• Obstructions which could cause improper venting. The com-

bustion and ventilation air flow must not be obstructed.

i Damage or deterioration which could cause improper vent-

ing or leakage of combustion products.

Burner Cleaning

In the event your burner needs cleaning, use the following

instructions:

If inspection of the burner shows that deauing is required,turn

the gascontrol knob clockwise(_"_) to the _OFT" position,

depressingslighdy.

NOTE: The knob cannot be turned fTom"PILOT" to "OFF"

unlessknob is depressedsfigfitly.DO NOT FORCE.

Loose deposits on or around the burner can be removed by care-

fully using the hose of a vacuum cleaner inserted through the

access door of the water heater. If the burner needs to be removed

for additional cleaning, call the Sears Service Center to remove

and dean the burner and correct the problem that required the

burner to be cleaned.

Draining

The water heater should be drained if being shut down during

freezing temperatures. Also periodic draining and cleaning of

sediment from the tank may be necessary.

Turn the gas control knob to the "OFF" position.

CLOSE the cold water inlet valve to the water heater.

OPEN a nearby hot water faucet and leave open to allow for

draining.

Connect a hose to the drain valve and terminate to an

adequate drain.

OPEN the water heater drain valve to allow for tank

draining.

NOTE: If the water heater is going to be shut down and

drained for an extended period, the drain valve should be

left open with hose connected allowing water to terminate

to an adeq*mte drain.

• Close thedrain valve.

• Follow instructions in the _Filling The Water Heater"

section.

• Follow the lighting instructions in the "Lighting" section to

restart the water heater.

Remove the washer and put the new one in place.

Screw the handle and cap assembly back into the drain valve

Follow the lighting instructions in the "Lighting" section to

restart the water heater.

ASSEMBLY

Housekeeping

Vacuum around base of water heater for dust, dirt, and lint on a

regular basis.

DISCHARGE PIPE

Failure to install and maintain a new properly listed tempera-

ture-pressure relief valve will release the manufacturer from any

claim which might result from excessive temperature or pressure.

AWARNING

If the temperature-pressure relief valve on the appliance

weeps or discharges periodically, this may be due to thermal

expansion. Your water heater may have a check valve

installed in the water line or a water meter with a check

valve. Consult the Sears Service Center for further informa-

tion. Do not plug the temperature-wessure relief valve.

AWARNING

When checkingthe tempereture-pressure relief valve opera-

don, make sure that (I) no one isin front of or around the

outlet ofthe temperature-pressure relief valvedischargeline,

and (2) that the water manuallydischargedwill not causeany

wopertydamagebecausethe water may be extremely hot.

If after manually operating the valve, it fails to completely

reset and continuesto release water, immediately closethe

cold water inlet to the water heater, follow the draining

instructions, and replace the temperature.pressure relief

valve with a now one.

Start Up Conditions

CONDENSATION

THERMAL EXPANSION

Whenever the water heater is filled with cold water, a certain

amount of condensation will form while the burner is on. A

water heater may appear to be leaklngwhen in fact the water is

condensation. This usually happens when:

• When a new water heater is filled with cold water for the

first time.

• When gas burns and water vapor isproduced in water

heaters, particularly high efficiency models where flue tem-

peratures are lower.

• When you use large amounts of hot water in a short time

and the refill water is very cold.

Moisture from the products of combustion condense on the

cooler tank surfaces and form drops of water which may fall

onto the burner or other hot surfaces to produce a "sizzling" or

"frying" noise.

Excessive condensation can cause pilot outage due to water run-

ning down the flue tube onto the main burner and putting out

the pilot.

Because of the suddenness and amount of water, condensation

water may be diagnosed as a "tank leak". After the water in the

tank warms up (about 1-2 hours), the condition should

disappear.

Do not assume the water heater is leaking until there has been

enough time for the water in the tank to warm up.

An undersized water heater will cause more condensation. The

water heater must be sized properly to meet the family's

demands for hot water including dishwashers, washing machir_es

and shower heads.

Excessive condensation may be noticed during the winter and

early spring months when incoming water temperatures are at

their lowest.

Good vendng is essential for a gas fired water heater to operate

properly as well as to carry away products of combustiohand

water vapor.

SMOKE/ODOR

It is not uncommon to experience a small amount of smoke and

odor during the initial start-up. This is due to burning off of oil

from metal parts, and will disappear in a short while.

Water suppl,_, systems may, because of high line pressure, fre-

quent cut-orrs, the effects of water hammer and others, have

installed devices such as pressure reducing valves, check valves,

back flow preventers, etc. to control these types of problems.

When these devices are not equipped with an internal by-pass,

and no other measures are taken, the devices cause the water sys-

tem to be dosed. As water is heated, it expands (thermal expan-

sion) and closed systems do not allow for the expansion of fieat-

ed water.

The water within the water heater tank expands as it is heated

and increases the pressure of the water system. If the relieving

point of the water heater's temperature-pressure relief valve is

reached, the valve will relieve the excess pressure. The tempera-

ture-pressure relief valve is not intended for the constant

relief of thermal e_tpansion. This is an unacceptable condition

and must be corrected.

It is recommended that any devicesinstalledwhich could create

a closedsystem have a by-passand/or the system havean expan-

sion tank to relieve the pressure built by thermal expansion in

the water system. Expansion tanks are available for ordering

through the Sears Service Center. Contact the local plumbing

inspector, water supplier, and/or the Sears Service Center for

assistancein controlling thesesituations.

SMELLY WATER

In each glasslined water heater there is installed at least one

anode rod (see parts section) for corrosion protection of the

tank. Certain water conditions will cause a reaction between this

rod and the water, The most common complaint associated with

the anode rod is one ofa _rotten egg smell". This odor is derived

from hydrogen sulfide gas dissolved in the water. The smell is

the result of four factors which must all be present for the odor

to develop:

a. a concentration of sulfate in the supply water.

b. little or no dissolved oxygen in the water.

c. a sulfate reducing bacteria within the water heater. (This

harmless bacteria]s non-toxic to humans.)

d. an excess of active hydrogen in the tank. This is caused by

the corrosion protective action of the anode.

Smelly water may be eliminated or reduced in some water heater

models by replacing the anode(s) with one of less active material,

and then chlorinating the water heater tank and all hot water

parts during periods of heat-up and cool-down do not represent

HIGH TEMPERATURE SHUT OFF SYSTEM WATER IS TOO HOT

This water heater is equipped with an automatic gas shut offsys-

tern. The high temperature shut off is built into the gas control

valve. This system shuts off the gas supply to the water heater

burners when high water temperatures are present. It is non-

resettable. If the high temperature shut off activates, the gas con-

trol valve must be replaced. If this were to occur, turn "OFF" the

entire gas supply to the water heater. Contact the Sears Service

Center.

• The temperature adjustment dial may be set too high. See the

"Temperature Adjustment" section.

NOTE: A period of time is necessary after an adjustment

has been made for the water temperature to reach the new

temperature setting.

• If lower temperature settings will not lower the water tempera-

ture, call the Sears Service Center.

Check the pilot flame. It may have gone out. All models have

an opening behind the outer door for viewing the pilot.

If the pilot is not lit, follow the "Lighting" instructions in this

manual or located above the gas control valve on the water

heater to relight thepilot. If the water was extremely hot and is

now cold, the high limit safety temperature shut off may have

put out the burner and pilot. If the high temperature shut off

activates, the gas controlvalve must be replaced. Contact the

Sears Service Center.

The gas control knob must be turned to the "ON" position.

The temperature adjustment dial may be set too low. See the

"Temperature Regulation" section.

• The gas company can check the gas input to see if it is correct.

An underfired water heater will not heat water as quickly.

• Look for leaking or open hot water faucets. Make sure all are

closed.

• The cold water inlet temperature may be colder during the winter

months. It will take longer to heat the water and seem like

less hot water.

• If you cannot find what is wrong, call the Sears Service Center.

Due to the nature of the typical gas water heater, the

water temperature in certain situations may be hotter

than the thermostat setting.

Short, frequent draws of hot water - especially with very

cold incoming water - can shockthe thermostat into brief

operation multing in hotter and hotter layers of water

closerto the top of the tank.

Changes in hot water usage patterns or raising the tern-

perature differential between the cut-on of the the mlo-

stat and the cold water temperature will usuallyeliminate

the problem.

O Water at the draft hood is water vaporwhich has con-

densedoutof the combustion products. This is causedby

a problem in the vent. Contact the SearsServiceCenter.

O *Condensationmay be seen on pipesin humid weather or

pipe connections may be leaking.

Q'The primary anode rodfitting may be leaking.

O Small amounts of waterfrom temperature-pressure relief

valve may be due to thermal expansion or high water

pressurein your area.

O'The temperature-pressure relief valve may be leaking at

the tank fitting.

Q Water from a drain valve may be due to the valve opened

slightly.

Q'The drain valve may be leaking at the tank fitting.

O Combustion products contain water vapor which can

condense on the cooler surfaces of the tank. Droplets

form and drip into the fire or run on the floor. This is

common at the time of startup after installation and

when incoming wateris cold.

O Water in the water heater bottomor on the floor may be

from condensation, loose connections, or the reliefvalve.

DO NOT replacethe water heater until a full inspection

of all possiblewater sources is madeand necessarycorrec-

tive steps taken. Leakagefrom other appliances, water

lines, orgroundseepageshould alsobe checked.

NOTE: To check wherethreaded portion enterstank,

insert cotton swab betweenjacket opening and fitting.

If cotton is wet, follow "Draining' instructions in the

"Service and Adjustment" section and then remove

fitting. Put pipe dope or teflon tape on the threads

and replace. Then follow =Filling the Water Heater"

instructions in the "Installation Instructions" section.
