GAS AND OIL FILL=UP
Oil (one bottle shipped with unit)
FirstTimeUse
1. Removeoil fill dipstick.
2. Withthe lawnmoweron levelground,use afunnelto emptyentire
contentsof oil bottleprovidedintothe engine.
3. Replaceoil fill dipstickandtighten.
Subsequent Uses
Onlyuse highqualitydetergentoil ratedwithAPIserviceclassification
SE SG, SH,or SJ.Selectthe oil's SAEviscositygradeaccordingto
the expectedoperatingtemperature.Followthe chart below.

Althoughmulti-viscosityoils (5W20,10W30,etc.)improvestarting
incold weather,they will result in increasedoil consumptionwhen
usedabove32°R Checkyour engineoil levelmorefrequentlyto avoid
possibleenginedamagefrom runninglowon oil.See Figure9.
1. Checktheoil levelbeforeeach operationmakingcertainnot
to rubthe dipstickalongthe insidewalls of the oil fill tube and
withoutscrewingit in.This wouldresultina falsedipstick
reading.Refillto FULLmarkon dipstick,if necessary.Capacity
is approximately18oz.Overfillingwillcausetheengineto smoke
profuselyandwill resultin poorengine performance.
2. Replaceoil fill dipstickandtighten.
3. Keepoil levelat FULL.Runningthe enginewithtoo littleoil can
resultin permanentenginedamage.
Gasoline
Useextremecare whenhandlinggasoline.Gasolineis extremely
flammableandthe vaporsare explosive.Neverfuel machineindoors
or whilethe engineis hotor running.Extinguishcigarettes,cigars,
pipes,andothersourcesof ignition.
Removefuel cap from thefuel tank.
2. Makesurethe containerfromwhichyouwill pour thegasolineis
cleanandfreefromrust or foreignparticles.Neveruse gasoline
thatmay be stale from long periodsof storagein its container.
Gasolinethat hasbeen sittingfor anyperiodlongerthanfour
weeksshouldbe consideredstale.
3. Fill fueltankwithclean,fresh, unleadedregulargasolineonly.Do
not usegasolinecontainingMETHANOL.Replacefuel cap.
Useof alcoholblendedfuels(calledgasoholor usingethanolor
methanol)can attractmoisturewhichleadsto separationandforma-
tionof acidsduringstorage.Acidic gas candamagethe fuelsystem
[of anengnewh e n storage.

Toavoidengineproblems,thefuel systemshouldbeemptiedbefore
storagefor 30days or longer.Drainthe gas tank,start theengine
andlet it rununtilthe fuel linesandcarburetorare empty.Usefresh
fuel nextseason.See STORAGEInstructionsforadditionalinforma-
tion.
Neveruse engineorcarburetorcleanerproductsin the fuel tank or
permanentdamagemayoccur.
Be surenooneotherthan the operatoris standingnearthe lawn
mowerwhilestartingengineoroperatingmower.Neverrun engine
indoorsor inenclosed,poorlyventilatedareas.Engineexhaust
containscarbonmonoxide,an odorlessanddeadlygas.Keephands,
feet, hairand looseclothingaway fromany movingpartson engine
and lawnmower.
TO START ENGINE
1. Attachsparkplugwireandrubberboot to sparkplug.
2. Gastankshouldbeat least3/4 full beforestarting.
3. Pushprimerbuttononce.Do notprime onhot daysor to restarta
warmengineaftera shortshutdown.See Figure10.
4. Standingbehindthe mower,depressthe bladecontroland hold it
againstthe upperhandle.See Figure10.
5. This mowerhas twoseparatestartingsystems,electricand recoil.
Electric Start: Turnignitionkeyto the right to startthe engine.
Releasethe keyaftertheenginestarts.
Recoil Start: Graspstarterhandleandpull rope out slowly
untilenginereachesstartof compressioncycle(ropewillpull
slightlyharderat this point).Let the rope rewindslowly.Pull rope
witha rapid,continuous,full armstroke.Keepingafirm gripon
thestarter handle,let theroperewindslowly.
