Check Engine Oil
Checkoil levelbeforeeachoperation.Besureoil levelis maintained.
1. Checkthe oil withthe enginestoppedand level.
2. Removethe oil fill dipstickandwipeit clean.
3. Insertand tightendipstick.Removeitto checkthe oil level.
4. Ifthe oil levelisnearor belowthe lowerlimitmarkon the dipstick,
removethe oil fillercap/dipstick,andfill withthe recommendedoil
to the upperlimitmark.Do not overfill.
5. Reinstallthe oilfill dipstick.
Change Engine Oil
Gasolineand its vaporsareextremelyflammableandexplosive.
Fireor explosioncancause severeburnsor death.
Changeengineoil after thefirst five hoursof operation,andeveryfifty
hoursor once a seasonthereafter.
lWhen drainthe oil from the oil fill the fuel tank mustbe
you top
tube,
emptyor fuel canleak outand resultin afire or explosion.Toempty
the fuel tank, runthe engineuntilitstopsfrom lack of fuel.
1. Withengineoff butstill warm,disconnectthe spark plugwireand
keepit awayfrom the sparkplug.
2. Placea suitablecontainernextto the engineto catchthe usedoil.
3. Removethe oil fill dipstickanddraintheoil intothecontainerby
tippingtheenginetowardthe oil fillerneck.See Figure17.
Usedoil isa hazardouswasteproduct.Disposeof usedoil properly.
IDonot discardwith householdwaste.Checkwith yourlocalauthori-
_tiesor SearsServiceCenterfor safedisposal/recyclingfacilities.
4. Withthe engineina levelposition,fill to the upperlimit markon
thedipstick withthe recommendedoil.
Runningthe enginewitha lowoil levelcan causeenginedamage.
5. Reinstallthe oilfill dipsticksecurely.
Clean Engine
Dailyor beforeevery use,cleangrass,chaffor accumulated
debrisfromengine.Keeplinkage,spring,and controlsclean.
Keepareaaroundand behindmufflerfreeof any combustible
debris.
Keepingenginecleanallowsair movementaroundengine.
Engineparts shouldbe keptcleanto reducethe riskof overheat-
ingand ignitionof accumulateddebris.

Lubricatepivotpointson the bladecontrolat leastoncea seasonwith
light oil.This controlmustoperatefreelyinbothdirections.See Figure
18.

system.Usea brushor dry cloth.
