WEEDWACKER ® LINE TRIMMER

For one year from the date of purchase, when this Craftsman Gas Powered

Weedwacker Line Trimmer is maintained, lubricated, and tuned up according to

the operating and maintenance instructions in this manual, Sears will repair, free

of charge, any defect in materials or workmanship.

This warranty excludes nylon line, spark plug, and air filter, which are expendable

parts and become worn during normal use.

If this Weedwacker line trimmer is used for commercial purposes, this warranty ap-

plies for only 90 days from the date of purchase. If this Weedwacker line trimmer is

used for rental purposes, this warranty applies for only 30 days from the date of pur-

chase. This warranty applies only while this product is in use in the United States.

MANUAL ON THE UNIT

for line trimmer use only. Use of any

other accessories or attachments will

increase the risk of injury.

OPERATOR SAFETY

• Dress properly. Always wear safety

glasses or similar eye protection

when operating, or performing main-

tenance, on your unit (safety

glasses are available). Eye protec-

tion should be marked Z87.

• Always wear face or dust mask if op-

eration is dusty.

• Always wear heavy, long pants, long

sleeves, boots, and gloves. Wear-

ing safety leg guards is recom-

mended.

• Always wear foot protection. Do not

go barefoot or wear sandals. Stay

clear of spinning line.

• Secure hair above shoulder length.

Secure or remove loose clothing or

clothing with loosely hanging ties,

straps, tassels, etc. They can be

caught in moving parts.

• Being fully covered also helps pro-

tect you from debris and pieces of

toxic plants thrown by spinning line.

• Stay Alert. Do not operate this unit

when you are tired, ill, upset or un-

der the influence of alcohol, drugs,

or medication. Watch what you are

doing; use common sense.

• Wear hearing protection.

• Never start or run inside a closed

room or building. Breathing exhaust

fumes can kill.

• Keep handles free of oil and fuel.

UNIT / MAINTENANCE SAFETY

• Disconnect the spark plug before

performing maintenance except car-

buretor adjustments.

• Look for and replace damaged or

loose parts before each use. Look

for and repair fuel leaks before use.

Keep in good working condition.

• Replace trimmer head parts that are

chipped, cracked, broken, or dam-

aged in any other way before using

the unit.

• Maintain unit according to recom-

mended procedures. Keep cutting

line at proper length.

• Use only 0.080 inch (2 mm) diame-

ter Craftsman@ brand line. Never

use wire, rope, string, etc.

• Install required shield properly be-

fore using the unit. Use only speci-

fied trimmer head; make sure it is

properly installed and securely fas-

tened.

• Make sure unit is assembled cor-

rectly as shown in this manual.

• Make carburetor adjustments with

lower end supported to prevent line

from contacting any object.

• Keep others away when making car-

buretor adjustments.

• Use only recommended Craftsman®

accessories and replacement parts.

• Have all maintenance and service

not explained in this manual per-

formed by a Sears Service Center.

FUEL SAFETY

• Mix and pour fuel outdoors.

• Keep away from sparks or flames.

• Use a container approved for fuel.

• Do not smoke or allow smoking near

fuel or the unit.

• Avoid spilling fuel or oil. Wipe up all

fuel spills.

• Move at least 10 feet (3 meters)

away from fueling site before start-

ing engine.

• Stop engine and allow to cool before

removing fuel cap.

• Always store gasoline in a container

approved for flammable liquids.

CUTTING SAFETY

II_ WARNING: Inspect the area be-

fore each use. Remove objects

(rocks, broken glass, nails, wire, etc.)

which can be thrown by or become

entangled in line. Hard objects can

damage the trimmer head and be

thrown causing serious injury.

• Use only for trimming, edging, scalp-

ing, mowing and sweeping. Do not

use for pruning or hedge trimming.

• Keep firm footing and balance. Do

not overreach.

• Keep all parts of your body away

from muffler and spinning line. Keep

engine below waist level. A hot muf-

tier can cause serious burns.

• Cut from your right to your left. Cut-

ting on left side of the shield will

throw debris away from the operator.

• Use only in daylight or good artificial

light,

• Use only for jobs explained in this

manual.

TRANSPORTING AND STORAGE

• Allow engine to cool; secure unit be-

fore storing or transporting in vehicle.

• Empty the fuel tank before storing or

transporting the unit. Use up fuel left

in the carburetor by starting the en-

gine and letting it run until it stops.

• Store unit and fuel in area where

fuel vapors cannot reach sparks or

open flames from water heaters,

electric motors or switches, fur-

naces, etc.

• Store unit so line limiter blade can-

not accidentally cause injury. The

unit can be hung by the tube.

• Store unit out of reach of children.

SAFETY NOTICE: Exposure to vibra-

tions through prolonged use of gaso-

line powered hand tools could cause

blood vessel or nerve damage in the

fingers, hands, and joints of people

prone to circulation disorders or ab-

normal swellings. Prolonged use in

cold weather has been linked to blood

vessel damage in otherwise healthy

people. If symptoms occur such as

numbness, pain, loss of strength,

change in skin color or texture, or loss

of feeling in the fingers, hands, or

joints, discontinue the use of this tool

and seek medical attention. An anti-

vibration system does not guarantee

the avoidance of these problems. Us-

ers who operate power tools on a con-

tinual and regular basis must monitor

closely their physical condition and

the condition of this tool.

SPECIAL NOTICE: This unit is

equipped with a temperature limiting

muffler and spark arresting screen

which meets the requirements of Cali-

fornia Codes 4442 and 4443. All U.S.

forest land and the states of California,

Idaho, Maine, Minnesota, New Jersey,

Oregon, and Washington require by

law that many internal combustion em

gines be equipped with a spark arrest-

ing screen. If you operate in a locale

where such regulations exist, you are

legally responsible for maintaining the

operating condition of these parts.

Failure to do so is a violation of the

law. For normal homeowner use, the

muffler and spark arresting screen will

not require any service. After 50

hours of use, we recommend that your

muffler be serviced or replaced by

your Sears Service Center.

It is normal for the fuel filter to rattle in

the empty fuel tank.

Finding fuel or oil residue on muffler is

normal due to carburetor adjustments

and testing done by the manufacturer.

ASSEMBLY

_WARNING: If received as-

sembled, repeat all steps to ensure

your unit is properly assembled and all

fasteners are secure.

Be sure to attach the assist handle to

the unit before you attach the shield.

ATTACHING THE HANDLE

(some units are already assembled)

1. Assemble handle to the unit as

shown; make sure bottom of ham

die is seated in the groove in the

trigger housing.

NOTE: Knob must be assembled on

the right hand side of the unit as

shown in the illustration.

2. Make sure the bolt is seated in the

hex-shaped hole in the handle.

3. Pivot the handle to a comfortable

position.

4. Tighten knob securely.

ATTACHING SHIELD

_WARNING: The shield must be

properly installed. The shield provides

partial protection from the risk of thrown

objects to the operator and others and

is equipped with a line limiter blade

which cuts excess line to the proper

length, The line limiter blade (on under-

side of shield) is sharp and can cut you.

For proper orientation of shield, see

KNOWYOURTRIMMER illustration in OP-

ERATIONsection.

1. Remove wing nut from shield.

2. Insert bracket into slot as shown.

3. Pivot shield until bolt passes

through hole in bracket.

4. Securely tighten wing nut onto bolt.

ON/OFF SWITCH

The ON/OFF switch is used tostop em

gine. Tostop the engine, move switch

to the OFF position.

PRIMER BULB

The PRIMER BULB removes air from

the carburetor and fuel lines and fills

them with fuel. This allows you to start

the engine with fewer pulls on the

starter rope. Activate the primer bulb

by pressing it and allowing it to return

to its original form.

CHOKE

The CHOKEhelps to supply fuel to the

engine to aid in cold starting. Activate

the choke by moving the choke lever to

the FULLCHOKE position, After the em

gine attempts to start, move the choke

lever to the HALF CHOKE position. Once

engine has started, move the choke le_

vet to the OFF CHOKEposition.

EDGE GUIDE

The EDGE GUIDE protects the unit

from contacting the ground during

edging.

BEFORE STARTING ENGINE

FUELING ENGINE

_J_ WARNING: Remove fuel cap

slowly when refueling.

This engine is certified to operate on

unleaded gasoline. Before operation,

gasoline must be mixed with a good

quality synthetic 2-cycle air-cooled

engine oil. We recommend Craftsman

brand synthetic oil. Mix gasoline and oil

at a ratio of 40:1. A 40:1 ratio is

obtained by mixing 3.2 ounces of oil

with 1 gallon of unleaded gasoline.

Included with this trimmer is a 3.2

ounce container of oil. Pour the entire

contents of this container into 1gallon

of gasoline to achieve the proper fuel

mixture. DO NOT USE automotive oil or

boat oil. These oils will cause engine

damage. When mixing fuel, follow

instructions printed on container.

Once oil is added to gasoline, shake

container momentarily to assure that the

fuel is thoroughly mixed. Always read

and follow the safety rules relating to

fuel before fueling your unit.

IMPORTANT

Experience indicates that alcohol

blended fuels (called gasohol or using

ethanol or methanol) can attract mois-

ture which leads to separation and

formation of acids during storage.

Acidic gas can damage the fuel sys-

tem of an engine while in storage.

To avoid engine problems, empty the

fuel system before storage for 30 days

or longer. Drain the gas tank, start the

engine and let it run until the fuel lines

and carburetor are empty. Use fresh

fuel next season.

Never use engine or carburetor clean-

er products in the fuel tank or perma*

nent damage may occur.

See the STORAGE section for addition-

al information.

HOW TO STOP YOUR UNIT

• To stop the engine, move the ON/

OFF switch to the OFF position.

• If engine does not stop, move choke

to the FULL CHOKE position.

_1_WARNING: The trimmer head

will turn while starting the engine.

Avoid any contact with the muffler. A

hot muffler can cause serious burns.

STARTING A COLD ENGINE (or a

warm engine after running out of

fuel)

1. Set unit on a flat surface.

2. Move ON/OFFswitch to the ON posi-

tion.

3. Slowly press the primer bulb 6

times.

4. Move choke lever to FULLCHOKE

position.

5. Squeeze the throttle trigger fully and

hold through all remaining steps.

6. Pull starter rope handle sharply until

engine sounds as it if is trying to

start, but do not pull rope more than

6 times.

7. As soon as engine sounds as if it is

trying to start, move choke lever to

the HALFCHOKEposition.

8. Pull starter rope sharply until engine

runs, but no more than 6 pulls.

NOTE: If the engine doesn't start

after 6 pulls (at the HALFCHOKE

position), move the choke lever to

the FULLCHOKE position and press

the primer bulb 6 times. Squeeze

and hold the throttle trigger and pull

the starter rope 2 more times. Move

the choke lever to the HALFCHOKE

position and pull the starter rope un-

til the engine runs, but no more than

6 pulls. Ifthe engine still doesn't

start, it is probably flooded. Proceed

to STARTINGA FLOODEDENGINE.

9. Once the engine starts, allow it to

run 10 seconds, then move the

choke lever to the OFF CHOKE

position. Allow the unit to run for

30 more seconds at OFF CHOKE

before releasing the throttle trigger.

NOTE: If engine dies with the

choke lever in the OFF CHOKE

position, move the choke lever to

the HALF CHOKE position and pull

the rope until engine runs, but no

more than 6 pulls.

STARTING A WARM ENGINE

1. Move ON/OFF switch to the ON posi-

tion.

2. Move the choke lever to the HALF

CHOKEposition.

3. Squeeze and hold the throttle trig-

ger. Keep throttle trigger fully

squeezed until the engine runs

smoothly.

4. Pull starter rope sharply until engine

runs, but no more than 5 pulls.

5. Allow engine to run 15 seconds,

then move the choke lever to the

OFF CHOKEposition.

NOTE: If engine has not started, pull

starter rope 5 more pulls. If engine still

does not run, it is probably flooded.

STARTING A FLOODED ENGINE

Flooded engines can be started by

placing the choke lever in the OFF

CHOKE position; then, pull the rope to

clear the engine of excess fuel. This

could require pulling the starter handle

many times depending on how badly

the unit is flooded.

If the unit still doesn't start, refer to

TROUBLESHOOTING TABLE or call

1-800-235-5878.

protection. Never lean over the trimmer

head. Rocks or debris can ricochet or

be thrown into eyes and face and

cause blindness or other serious injury.

When operating unit, stand as shown

and check for the following:

• Wear eye protection and heavy

clothing,

• Hold trigger handle with right hand

and assist handle with left hand.

• Keep unit below waist level.

• Cut only from your right to your left to

ensure debris is thrown away from

you. Without bending over, keep line

near and parallel to the ground and

not crowded into material being cut.

Do not run the engine at a higher

speed than necessary. The cutting

line will cut efficiently when the engine

is run at less than full throttle. At lower

speeds, there is less engine noise and

vibration. The cutting line will last

longer and will be less likely to "weld"

onto the spool.

Always release the throttle trigger and

allow the engine to return to idle

speed when not cutting.

To stop engine:

• Release the throttle trigger.

• Move the ON/OFF switch to the OFF

position.

TWIST AND EDGE

The Twist and Edge feature allows for

easy edging of sidewalks, patios,

driveways, etc.

1. Pull the tab toward the engine.

2. Twist the tube to the edging posi-

tion; release tab.

TRIMMER LINE ADVANCE

The cutting head advances line au-

tomatically. Do not tap head on the

gbroundto advance line. This may

reak parts and cause cutting head to

malfunction.

Upon unit start up, the line will advance

automatically to the correct cutting path

length.

Always keep the shield in place when

the tool is being operated.

CUTTING METHODS

and do not crowd the line when cutting

around hard objects (rock, gravel, fence

posts, etc.), which can damage the trim-

mer head, become entangled in the

line, or be thrown causing a serious

hazard.

Right Wrong

• The line will easily remove grass

and weeds from around walls,

fences, trees and flower beds, but it

also can cut the tender bark of trees

or shrubs and scar fences.

• For trimming or scalping, use less

than full throttle to increase line life

and decrease head wear, especially:

• During light duty cutting.

• Near objects around which the line

can wrap such as small posts,

trees or fence wire.

• For mowing or sweeping, use full

throttle for a good clean job.

TRIMMING - Hold the bottom of the

trimmer head about 3 in, (8 cm) above

the ground and at an angle. Allow only

the tip of the line to make contact, Do

not force trimmer line into work area.

SCALPING - The scalping technique

removes unwanted vegetation. Hold

the bottom of the trimmer head about

3 in. (8 cm) above the ground and at

an angle. Allow the tip of the line to

strike the ground around trees, posts,

monuments, etc. This technique in-

creases line wear.

MOWING - Your trimmer is ideal for

mowing in places conventional lawn

mowers cannot reach. In the mowing

position, keep the line parallel to the

ground. Avoid pressing the head into

the ground as this can scalp the

ground and damage the tool.

SWEEPING - The fanning action of

rotating line can be used for a quick

and easy clean up. Keep line parallel

to and above the surfaces being

swept and move the tool from side to

side.

EDGING - Adjust trimmer to the edg-

ing position (see TWIST AND EDGE

section). Allow only the tip of the line

to make contact. Do not force trimmer

line into work area.

to operator abuse or negligence, To

receive full value from the warranty,

the operator must maintain unit as

instructed in this manual, Various ad-

CHECK FOR DAMAGED OR

WORN PARTS

Contact Sears Service Center for re-

placement of damaged or worn parts.

• ON/OFF Switch - Ensure ON/OFF

switch functions properly by moving

the switch to the OFF position. Make

sure engine stops; then restart en-

gine and continue.

• Fuel Tank - Discontinue use of unit

if fuel tank shows signs of damage

or leaks.

• Debris Shield - Discontinue use of

unit if debris shield is damaged.

INSPECT AND CLEAN UNIT AND

DECALS

• After each use, inspect complete

unit for loose or damaged parts.

Clean the unit and decals using a

damp cloth with a mild detergent.

• Wipe off unit with a clean dry cloth.

CLEAN AIR FILTER

A dirty air filter decreases engine per-

formance and increases fuel con-

sumption and harmful emissions. Al-

ways clean after every 5 hours of

operation.

1. Clean the cover and the area

around it to keep dirt from falling into

the carburetor chamber when the

cover is removed.

2. Remove parts as illustrated.

NOTE: To avoid creating a fire hazard

or producing harmful evaporative

emissions, do not clean filter in gaso-

line or other flammable solvent.

3. Wash the filter in soap and water.

4. Allow filter to dry.

5. Add a few drops of oil to the filter;

squeeze the filter to distribute oil.

6. Replace parts.

REPLACE SPARK PLUG

Replace the spark plug each year to

ensure the engine starts easier and

runs better. Set spark plug gap at

0.025 inch. Ignition timing is fixed and

nonadjustable.

1. Twist, then pull off spark plug boot.

2. Remove spark plug from cylinder

and discard.

3. Replace with Champion RCJ-6Y

spark plug and tighten securely with

a 3/4 inch socket wrench.

4. Reinstall the spark plug boot.

LINE REPLACEMENT

Pre-wound spools offer the most con-

venient method for replacing line and

ensuring optimum performance.

• Replacement spools are color-

coded to ensure use of the correct

spool with your unit. Be sure to use

the same color spool as the existing

spool.

NOTE: Always clear dirt and debris

from cutting head components when

performing any type of maintenance.

• Hold spool and unscrew cap by turn-

ing in the direction shown on top of

the cap.

• Remove line guide ring and spool.

2. Insert one end of line into center

cavity of empty spool. Ensure line

will feed into spool in the direction

shown on the spool (counterclock-

wise).

3. Continue feeding line into spool,

leaving 4 - 6 inches (10 - 15 cm)

unwound from center of spool.

INSTALLING SPOOL WITH LINE

1. Install replacement spool.

2. Thread line through line guide ring.

Use a pre-wound spool or refill spool

with line. If using a pre-wound spool,

remove tape strip from line and spool.

REFILLING THE SPOOL WITH LINE

3. Rest guide ring on spool and place

line through slot, Allow line to ex-

tend 4 - 6 inches (10 - 15 cm) from

center of spool,

4. Ensure line remains in slot while

screwing cap on to the shaft. Only

tighten cap hand tight!

CARBURETOR ADJUSTMENT

_I_WARNING: Keep others away

when making idle speed adjustments.

The trimmer head will be spinning dur-

ing this procedure, Wear your protec-

tive equipment and observe all safety

precautions.

The carburetor has been carefully set

at the factory, Adjustments may be

necessary if you notice any of the fol-

lowing conditions:

• Engine will not idle when the throttle is

released.

Make adjustments with the unit sup-

ported so the cutting attachment is off

the ground and will not make contact

with any object, Hold the unit by hand

while running and making ad ust-

ments. Keep a parts of your body

away from the cutting attachment and

muffler.

SEASONAL STORAGE

Prepare unit for storage at end of sea*

son or if it will not be used for 30 days

or more.

If your unit is to be stored for a period

of time:

• Clean the entire unit before lengthy

storage.

• Store in a clean dry area.

• Lightly oil external metal surfaces.

FUEL SYSTEM

Under FUELING ENGINE in the OPERA-

TION section of this manual, see mes-

sage labeled IMPORTANT regarding

the use of gasohol in your engine.

Fuel stabilizer is an acceptable alter-

native in minimizing the formation of

fuel gum deposits during storage. Add

stabilizer to the gasoline in the fuel

tank or fuel storage container. Follow

the mix instructions found on stabilizer

container. Run engine at least 5 min-

utes after adding stabilizer.

Craftsman 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air

cooled) is already blended with fuel

stabilizer. If you do not use this Sears

oil, you can add a fuel stabilizer to

your fuel tank.

INTERNAL ENGINE

• Remove spark plug and pour 1 tea-

spoon of 40:1, 2-cycle engine oil (air

cooled) through the spark plug

opening. Slowly pull the starter rope

8 to 10 times to distribute oil.

• Replace spark plug with new one of

recommended type and heat range.

• Clean air filter.

• Check entire unit for loose screws,

nuts, and bolts. Replace any dam*

aged, broken, or worn parts.

• At the beginning of the next season,

use only fresh fuel having the proper

gasoline to oil ratio.

OTHER

• Do not store gasoline from one sea-

son to another.

• Replace your gasoline can if it starts

to rust.

time listed below provided there has

been no abuse, neglect, or improper

maintenance of your small off-road en-

the ignition system. Where a warrant-

able condition exists, Sears will repair

your small off-road engine at no cost to

solely for the lack of receipts or for your

failure to ensure the performance of all

scheduled maintenance. As the small

off-road engine owner, you should be

TRANSPORTE Y ALMACENAMIENTO

• Espere que el motor se enfrie y fije

bien el aparate antes de quardarlo e

de transpertarlo en un vehiculo.

• Vacie el tanque de combustible antes

de guardar el aparato o de transpor-

ratio. Consuma tedo el combustible

restante en el carburador poniende el

motor en marcha y dej&ndolo en mar-

cha hasta que le motor se pare solo.

• Guarde el aparato y el combustible

en un lugar dende los vaperes del

combustible no puedan alcanzar

chispas ni llamas prevenientes de

los termotanques, los motores e in-

terruptores el6ctricos, los calefac-

tores centrales, etc.

• Guarde el aparato de modo que el

limitador de linea no pueda causer

heridas accidentales. Se puede col-

gar el aparate por la caja el eje de

prepulsi6n.

• Guarde el aparato fuera del alcance

de los nifios.

AVlSO DE SEGURIDAD: El estar ex-

de user esta maquina inmediatamente y

de anti-vibraci6n no garantizan que se

eviten tales problemas. Los usuarios

que hacen uso continuo y prolongando

de las herramientas de fuerza deben

fiscalizar atentamente su estado fisico y

el estado del aparato.

AVISO ESPECIAL: Su aparato viene

equipada con silenciador limitador de

temperatura y con rejilla antichispa que

Es normal escuchar que el filtro de com-

bustible golpetee en el tanque vacio.

Es normal encontrar residuos de aceite

o de gasolina en el silenciador, debido a

los ajustes al carburador y alas pruebas

MONTAJE

_ADVERTENCIA: Si recibi6 el

aparato ya armado, repita todos los

INSTALACION DE LA PROTECTOR

_ADVERTENClA: El protector

deber_ ser instalado correctamente. El

CEBADOR

El CEBADOR ayuda a suministrar com-

bustible al motor para facilitar el arran-

que cuando el motor est& frio. Acione

el cebador colocando la palanca en la

posici6n FULL CHOKE. Despu6s que el

motor intente arrancar, mueva la pa-

lanca del cebador a la posici6n HALF

La GUIA PARA BORDES impedir9 que el

aparato toque el suelo durante el pro-

cedimiento de bordear.

ANTES DE PONER EN MARCHA EL

MOTOR

_II, ADVERTENCIA: Lea atenta-

mente la informaci6n sobre el combus-

tible en laas reglas de seguridad antes

de comenzar. Si no comprende las re-

glas de seguridad, no intente abastec-

er el aparato de combustible. Llame al

nt_mero 1-800-235-5878.

ABASTEClMIENTO DEL MOTOR

_ADVERTENCIA: Remueva la

tapa del tanque de combustible lenta-

mente al reabastecer combustible.

Este motor est& habilitado para funcio-

nat con gasolina sin plomo. Antes de

comenzar con el uso, se debera mez-

clar la gasolina con un aceite de sint6-

rico de buena calidad para motores de

2 tiempos enfriados a aire, Recomen-

damos el aceite de sint6tico de la mar-

ca Craftsman, Mezcle la gasolina con

el aceite en la proporci6n 40:1. Se ob-

tiene una proporci6n de 40:1 mezclan-

do 3,2 onzas de aceite con cada gal6n

de gasolina sin plomo. Se incluye con

esta aparato un recipiente de 3,2 on-

zas de aceite, Adiera el contenido en-

tero de este recipiente en 1 gal6n de

gasolina para alcanzar la mezcla apro-

piada del combustible. NO USE aceite

para autom6viles ni para barcas. Es-

tos aceites dafiaran el motor. AI mez-

clar el combustible, siga las instruc-

clones impresas en el recipiente. Una

vez haya a_adido el aceite a la gasoli-

na, agite al recipiente brevemente

para asegurar que el combustible est6

completamente mezclado. Siempre

lea y siga las instrucciones de seguri-

dad que tienen que ver con el com-

bustible antes de abastecer el aparato.

IMPORTANTE

La experiencia indica que los combus-

tible mezclados con alcohol (los llama-

dos gasohol o los que contienen eta-

nolo metanol) pueden atraer la

humedad, Io que puede causar la se-

paraci6n y la formaci6n de _cidos du-

rante el almacenaje. La gasolina _cida

puede dafiar el sistema de combus-

tible del motor durante el almacenaje.

Para evitar problemas con el motor,

deber_ vaciarse el sistema de com-

bustible antes de almacenar el aparato

por 30 dias o m_s. Vacie el tanque de

combustible, ponga el motor en mar-

cha y dejelo en marcha hasta que las

lineas de combustible y el carburador

queden vacios. Use combustible fres-

co para la proxima temporada.

Nunca use productos de limpieza de

motor o carburador en el tanque de

combustible ya que de hacerla puede

provocar daSos permanentes.

PARA DETENER EL MOTOR

• Para detener el motor, ponga el in-

terruptor ON/OFF en la posici6n OFF.

• Si el motor no se detiene, mueva el

cebador en ]a posici6n FULL CHOKE

(estrangulamiento total de aire).

PAPA ARPANCAR CON MOTOR

FRIO (o motor caliente despu_s de

quedar sin combustible)

1. Ponga el aparato en una superficie

plana.

2. Mueva el interruptor ON/OFF a la

posici6n ON.

3. Optima lentamente el bombeador

6 veces.

4. Mueva la palanca del cebador a la

posici6n FULL CHOKE.

5. Apriete y sujete el gatillo durante

todos los pasos siguientes.

motor suene como si est6 intentan-

do arrancar, pero no tire de la

7. Tan pronto como el motor suene

como si fuera a arrancar, mueva la

HALF CHOKE.

8. Tire flrmemente del mango de la

cuerda de arranque hasta que el

motor arranque, pero no mas de 6

tirones. AVISO: Si el motor no ar-

ranca despu6s del sexto tiron de la

cuerda de arranque (con la palam

ca del cebador en la posici6n HALF

CHOKE), mueva la palanca del ce-

bador a la posici6n FULL CHOKE y

oprima el bombeador 6 veces.

Apriete y sostenga el gatillo aceler-

ador y tire de la cuerda de arram

que otras 2 veces. Mueva la palam

ca del cebador a la posici6n HALF

CHOKE y tire de la cuerda de arran-

que hasta que el motor se ponga

en marcha, pero no mas de 6

veces. Si el motor no arranca, pro-

bablemente se encuentre ahoga-

do. Proceda con la secci6n AR-

RANQUE DE MOTOR AHQGADO.

Una vez que el motor arranca, per-

mita que el motor marche por 10

segundos, luego mueva la palan-

3. Oprima y sostenga el gatillo aceler-

ador. Mantenga el gatillo total-

mente oprimido hasta que el motor

marche sin problemas.

4. Tire firmemente del mango de la

cuerda de arranque hasta que el

motor se ponga en marcha, pero no

m_s de 5 tirones.

5. Permita que el motor marche por 15

segundos, entonces mueva la pa-

lanca del cebador a la posici6n OFF

CHOKE.

AVlSO: Si el motor no arranca, tire de

la cuerda otras 5 veces. Si el motor no

arranca, probablemente est6 ahogado.

ARRANQUE DE MOTOR AHOGADO

Lors motores ahogados pueden pore

erse en marcha moviendo la palanca

del cebador a la posici6n OFF CHOKE;

luego, tire de la cuerda para aclarar el

exceso de combustible. Esto podr& re-

querir que se tire del mango de la

cuerda muchas veces dependiendo

cuan ahogado se encuentre el motor.

protecci6n para los ojos, Nunca se in-

cline pot encima del cabezal, La linea

puede arrojar o hacer rebotar piedras

o desechos hacia los ojos y la cara,

pudiendo causar la p6rdida de la vista

u otras graves heridas.

Cuando aparato de funcionamiento,

p_rese como se vea en la figura y veri-

fique Io siguiente:

• Usando anteojos de seguridad y ropa

gruesa como protecci6n.

• Sostenga la manija del gatillo acelera-

dor con la mano derecha y manija

auxiliar con la mano izquierda,

• Mantenga el aparato debajo del nivel

de la cintura,

• Corte siempre desde la derecha ha-

cia la izquierda para que los escom-

bros sean arrojados en direcci6n

contraria a donde est9 parado. Sin

tener que inclinarse, mantenga la

linea cerca del suelo y paralela al

mismo, sin meterla dentro del materi-

al que se est& cortando.

No haga marchar el motor a revolu-

clones mas altas que las necesarias.

La linea de corte cortara de una forma

m_s eficiente sin que el motor este acel-

erado a fondo. A revoluciones m&s ba-

jas, habr_ menos ruido y menor vibra-

ci6n del motor. La linea de corte durara

m_s tiempo y tendr9 menor probabilidad

de "fundirse" en la bobina.

Siempre que no se halle cortando,

suelte el gatillo acelerador y permita

que el motor vuelva a marcha lenta.

Para detener el motor:

• Suelte el gatillo acelerador.

• Ponga el interruptor ON/OFF en la

posici6n OFF,

TWIST AND EDGE (GIRE Y BORDE)

Su aparato puede set usado para bor-

dear en aceras, patios, caminos de

entrada, etc,

1, Hale la lengQeta hacia el motor.

2. Tuerza el tubo en la posici6n de

corte; entonces, suelte la lengL)eta.

AVANCE DE LA LiNEA DE CORTE

El cabezal de corte hace mover au-

tom&ticamente la linea hacia ade-

lante. Para que la linea de corte se

mueva bacia adelante, no as nece-

sario dar golpes contra el suelo al

cabezal de corte. De Io contrario,

esta acci6n podria tener como resulta-

do piezas rotas y el funcionamiento

defectuoso del cabezal.

Despu6s de que el aparato se haya

puesto en marcha, la linea progresara

el largo correcto para efectuar el corte

de manera automatica.

Mantenga siempre el protector en su

lugar cuando la herramienta se en-

cuentre en funcionamiento.

_h_ADVERTENCIA: Utilice exclu-

sivamente linea redonda de 2 mm

(0,080 de pulgada) de di_metro. Otro

tipo de tamafios y formas har_n que la

linea no gire de forma apropiada Io que

resultar9 en el funcionamiento inadecua-

do del cabezal de corte o en accidentes

de seria gravedad. No utilice otro tipo

de materiales tales como alambre, hilo,

soga, etc, El alambre puede romperse

durante el corte y convertirse en un misil

peligroso Io que puede causar lesiones

de seria gravedad.

METODOS DE CORTE

Use la velocidad minima y no acerque

el aparato demasiado al cortar cerca

de objetos s61idos (piedra, gravilla,

postes, etc.): estos pueden daSar el

cabezal, pueden enredarse en la linea

o la linea los puede arrojar violem

tamente al aire, causando serio peli-

gro.

• La punta de la linea es la que corta.

Se conseguira mejor rendimiento y

el minimo desgaste si no se mete la

linea dentro del material que se est_

cortando, La ilustraci6n a continua-

ci6n muestra la forma correcta e in-

correcta de cortar.

las malas hierbas de alrededor de pa-

redes, cercados, arboles y macizos de

flores; pero tambi6n es capaz de cor-

rato sin acelerar a fondo, para incre-

mentar la vida t_til de la linea y dismi-

nuir el desgaste del cabezal,

los postes o &rboles de poco di&me-

troy el alambre de las cercas.

• Para cortar c6sped y barrer, acelere

el motor a fondo para Iograr un buen

trabajo de limpieza.

bezal unos 8 cm (3 pulgadas) del suelo

PARA ESCALPAR - La t6cnica del as-

calpado retira la vegetaci6n no desea-

da. Sostenga el cabezal unos 8 cm (3

pulgadas) del suelo yen 9ngulo. Deje

que la punta de la linea golpee contra

el suelo cerca de los &rboles, los post*

es, los monumentos, etc. Esta t6cnica

incrementa el desgaste de la linea.

acci6n ventiladora de la linea girante

para barrer rapida y f_cilmente un _rea

CRONOGRAMA DE MANTENIMIENTO

PARA BORDEAR - Ajuste el aparato

a la posici6n del bordeando (vea la

secci6n TWIST AND EDGE). Mientras

se encuentre bordeando, permita que

sea la punta de la linea la que haga el

contacto con el material a bordear. No

fuerce la linea. Mantenga m_xima pre-

cauci6n al bordear ya que objetos

pueden ser arrojados al aire por la

INSPECCIONE Y LIMPIE EL APARA-

LIMPIE EL FILTRO DEL AIRE

Los filtros de aire sucios disminuyen la

vida _til y el rendimiento del motor e

incrementan el consumo de combus-

tible y de emiciones nocivas. Limpie

siempre el filtro de aire despu6s de

cada 5 horas de uso.

1. Limpie la tapa y el _rea alrededor

de la tapa para evitar que caiga su-

ciedad o desechos en el carbura-

dor cuando se saque la tap&

2. Retire las piezas como se ilustra.

AVlSO: Para evitar peligro de incen-

dio y de emiciones evaporativas noci-

vas, no limpie el filtro de aire con gaso-

lina ni cualquier otro solvente inflam-

able,

3, Limpie el filtro con agua y jab6n.

4. Permita que el filtro se seque.

5. Aplique varias gotas de aceite al fil-

tro; exprima el filtro para distribuir el

aceite.

CAMBIE LA BUJIA

Deber_ cambiarse la bujia anualmente

para asegurar que el motor arranque

fgcilmente y tenga un mejor rendimeim

to, Ajuste la separaclon de los electro-

dos a 0,025 de pulgada. El encendido

es fijo e inalterable.

1. Gire y saque la cubierta de la

bu ia,

2. Ret re a bu ia del cilindro y des6-

chela.

3. C_mbiela por una bujia Champion

RCJ-6Y y ajuste firmemente la

bujia nueva con una Ilave de cubo

de 3/4 de pulgada.

4. Instale nuevamente la cubierta de

la bujia.

REEMPLAZO DE LA LINEA

El uso de bobinas previamente enrol-

ladas es el m6todo mAs conveniente

para reemplazar la linea de corte y

asegurarse que el aparato rinda un

funcionamiento 6ptimo.

• Las bobinas de repuesto vienen con

codificadas en colores para asegu-

rarnos el uso correcto de la bobina

con el aparato correspondiente.

AsegOrese de usar el mismo color

de bobina de repuesto qu el de la

bobina existente.

AVlSO: Mantenga siempre el cabezal

de corte limpio de escombros y sucie-

dad al efectuar cualquier tipo de man-

tenimiento.

• Sujete el bobina y desenrosque la

tapa girando en la direcci6nilustrada

en la parte superior de la misma.

• Retire el aro que guia la linea y la

bobina.

Utilice una bobina previamente enrol-

lada o vuelva a enroscar linea nueva

en la bobina existente. Si utiliza una

bobina pre-enrollada, retire la tira ad-

hesiva de la linea y la bobina.

COMO REBOBINAR LA BOBINA

2. Intreduzca un extremo de la linea

dentre de la cavidad central de la

bobina vacia. Aseg_rese de que la

linea enrelle en la bobina en la di-

reccibn que se ilustra en la misma

(en sentido contrario al de las agu-

3. ContinUe enrellando la linea en la

bobina, dejande sin enrellar de 10

a 15 cm (4 a 6 pulgadas) desde el

centro de la bebina.

COMO INSTALAR LA BOBINA CON

LA LINEA DE CORTE

1, Instale la bebina de repuesto.

2. Enrolle la linea a trav6s del are guia.

3. Coloque el aro guia en la bobina y

pase la linea por la ranura. Permi-

ta que la linea se extienda de 10 a

15 cm (4 a 6 pulgadas) desde el

centro de la bobina.

4. Asegure de que la linea permanez-

ca dentro de la ranura mientras en-

rosca la la tapa en la eje. Ajuste

la tapa manualmente,

AJUSTE AL CARBURADOR

_ADVERTENCIA: Mantenga a

otras personas alejadas de la zena en

donde se encuentre haciendo ajustes

de marcha [enta, El cabezal de corte

se mantendra girando durante este

precedimiento, Use su equipe protec-

tor y observe todas las precauciones

de seguridad.

El carburador ha side ajustado cuida-

dosamente en la f&brica. Posible-

mente sea necesarie hacer ajustes si

se neta cualquiera de las siguientes

cendicienes:

• El motor no funciona en marcha len-

ta cuando se suelta el acelerador.

Haga los ajustes sosteniendo el equipo

de manera que el accesorio de corte se

encuentre alejado del suelo y no haga

contacto con ningQn objeto. Sostenga

el aparato manualmente mientras el mo-

tor se encuentre encendido y mientras

usted se encuentre haciendo los

ajustes. Mantenga todas las partes de

su cuerpo alejadas de los accesorios de

corte y del silenciador.

Deje el motor en marcha lenta. Ajuste

las revelucienes hasta que el motor se

mantenga en marcha sin calarse ([a

marcha lenta es demasiado lenta),

• Gire el ternillo de marcha lenta hacia

la derecha para aumentar las revelu-

cienes si el motor se ahoga e se para.

• Gire el terni[Io de marcha lenta hacia

la izquierda para reducir las revolu-

ciones.

ESTAClONAL ALMACENAJE

Prepare el aparato para almacenarlo

al final de la temporada o si no Io va a

usar per m_s de 30 dias.

Siva a almacenar el aparato durante

un periodo largo de tiempo:

• Limpie el aparato per complete antes

del almacenaje.

• Almacene en un _rea limpia y seca.

• Aplique una pequefia cantidad de

aceite alas superficies externas

SlSTEMA DE COMBUSTIBLE

Vea el mensaje marcado come

IMPORTANTE, que se refiere al use

de combustibles con mezcla de alco-

hol en su aparato, en la secci6n de

USO, bajo ABASTECIMIENTO DEL MO-

TOR.

Los estabilizadores de combustible

son una alternativa aceptable para

minimizar la formaci6n de dep6sitos

de goma durante el almacenaje, A_a-

da estabilizador a la gasolina en el

tanque de combustible o en el reci-

piente para almacenar el mismo. Siga

las instrucciones de mezcla que seem

cuentran impresas en el envase, Pen*

ga el motor en marcha y d6jelo en

marcha par unos 5 minutes despu6s

de haberle puesto estabilizador.

El aceite Craftsman 40:1 para motores

a 2 tiempos (enfriados a aire) viene

mezclado con estabilizador de com-

bustible. Si no usa este aceite de

Sears, usted podr9 a_adir estabiliza-

dor al tanque de combustible.

INTERIOR DEL MOTOR

• Retire la bujia y vierta una cucharad-

ita de aceite 40:1 para motores a 2

tiempos (enfriados a aire) por la ab-

ertura para la bujia, Lentamente, tire

de la cuerda de arranque de 8 a 10

veces para distribuir el aceite.

• Cambie la bujia por una nueva del

tipo y de la gama de calor recomen-

dados,

• Limpie el filtro de aire.

• Examine todo el aparato para verificar

que no haya tornillos, tuercas ni per-

nos sueltos, Cambie todas la piezas

dafiadas, quebradas o gastadas.

• AI principio de la proxima temporada,

use exclusivamente combustible

fresco con la proporci6n correcta de

gasolina a aceite.

OTROS

• No guarde la gasolina de una tempo-

rada a la pr6xima,

• Cambie el recipiente de gasolina si

se empieza a oxidar.

fuera de carretera. Sears deber_ ga-

rantizar el sistema de control de emi-

si6n en su m_quina de motor pequefio

para uso fuera de carretera por los

pcriodos de ticmpo que explicamos a

continuaci6n y con la condici6n de que

su m_quina de motor pequeSo para

uso fuera de carretera no haya sufrido

ning_n tipo de abuso, negligencia o

mantenimiento inapropiado. Su siste-

ma de control de emisi6n incluye pie-

zas tales como el carburador y €l sis-

tema de ignici6n. Donde exista una

condici6n que requiera reparaci6n

bajo garantia, Sears reparar_ gratis su

motor pequefio para uso fuera de car-

retera. Los gatos cubiertos bajo la ga-

rantia incluyen el diagn6stico, las pie-

zas y labor. CUBIERTA DE GARAN-

TIA DEL FABRICANTE: Si cualquier

picza relacionada con el sistema de

emisi6n de su motor (como hemos en-

umerado en la lista de piezas de con*

trol de emisi6n bajo garantia) se en-

contrara defectuosa o defectos en el

material o cn la labor del motor causa-

ran que tal picza comenzara a fallar, la

pieza ser_ reparada o reemplazada

por Sears. GARANTIA DE RE-

SPONSABILIDAD DE DEL DUENO:

Como duefio de una m_quina de mo-

tor pcqueSo para uso fuera de carrct-

era, usted scra rcsponsable por el

mantenimiento adecuado en los perio-

dos previamente programados y cn-

umerados en su manual de instruc-

ciones. Sears recomicnda que guarde

todos los recibos que indiquen que se

ha desempcfiado mantenimiento en

su m_quina de motor pequefio para

uso fuera de carretera, pero Sears no

podr_ negar el servicio bajo garantia

t]nicamente a causa de la falta de reci-

bos o por el incumplimiento de su

parte en asegurarse que el mantenimi-

ento programado haya sido de-

sempeSado. Como dueSo de una

m_quina de motor pequeSo para uso

fuera de carretera, usted deber_ con-

tar con el conocimiento de que Sears

puede negar la cubierta bajo garantia

si su m_quina de motor pcquefio para

uso fuera de carrctera o alguna pieza

de la misma ha dejado de funcionar

debido al abuso, negligencia, manten-

imiento inapropiado, modiflcaciones

no aprobadas o el uso de piezas que

no hayan sido fabricadas o aprobadas

por el fabricante original del equipo.

Es responsabilidad suya el Ilevar su

m_quina de motor pequefio para uso

fuera de carretera a un centro de repa-

raci6n autorizado Sears tan pronto

como se presente el problema, Las

reparaciones bajo garantia deberan

ser completadas en un periodo de

tiempo razonable, que no exceda los

30 dias. Si cuenta usted con alguna
