Poor indoor air quality and
its causes.
Air pollution particles can be solid, liquid droplets, or gases. Excess particles can build
up indoors due to inadequate ventilation, high temperature, and humidity levels.
Ventilation can be challenging, because indoor pollutant levels can increase if not
enough outdoor air is brought in to dilute indoor air, but can also be increased by
outdoor pollutants traveling indoors and getting trapped.
Standards and certification
The maximum room size recommendation is based on the air purifier being able to make
5 air changes per hour (ACH) in the room where it is placed. This guiding principle is set
by the Association of Home Appliances Manufacturers (AHAM) and is the only
endorsed and accepted measurement for determining room size and the capacity of an
air purifier.

Why CADR is
important
An air purifier’s eectiveness against dierent pollutants is an indication of its
performance, but not the only one. It is even more important to look at how much
clean air the air purifier actually produces and how fast. This is called CADR (Clean Air
Deliverty Rate), and it gives you a way to compare the eectiveness of dierent air
purifiers.
There are dierent methods and standards for measuring the CADR value of an air
purifier. Some methods focus on particle removal and some on removal of gaseous
pollutants, while some measure both. The dierent methods may result in dierent
CADR values. However, the CADR value will make it easier to compare the performance
of air purifiers tested according to the same method.
Blueair products are tested according to various globally and locally used CADR
standards. In China, tests on formaldehyde, VOC’s and tobacco smoke are used to
determine the CADR values. Potassium chloride (PM0.3) is measured in Korea. Dust and
tobacco smoke is tested in Japan, and the Association of Home Appliances
Manufacturers (AHAM) use tobacco smoke, dust and pollen to determine the CADR for
dierent sizes of pollutants.
CADR: Why air changes per hour matters
If an air purifier is placed in a larger room than it is recommended for, the number of
air changes per hour and the improvement in air quality will be reduced, and
vice-versa. The steepest drop in pollutants occurs with air changes between 1 and 5
times per hour.
