8.1 ASH REMOVAL PROCEDURES
!
WARNING
IMPROPER DISPOSAL OF ASHES RESULT IN FIRES. DO NOT DISCARD ASHES IN CARDBOARD
BOXES, DUMP IN BACKYARDS, OR STORE IN GARAGES.
IF USING A VACUUM TO CLEAN UP ASHES, BE SURE THE ASHES ARE ENTIRE COOLED. USING A
VACUUM TO CLEAN UP WARM ASHES COULD CAUSE A FIRE INSIDE THE VACUUM.
NEVER OPERATE YOUR APPLIANCE WITH THE ASH PLUG (IF APPLICABLE) REMOVED.
FAILURE TO ACHIEVE A GOOD SEAL BETWEEN THE ASH OPENING, ASH PLUG OR ASH WELL DOOR
WILL RESULT IN AN OVER FIRE CONDITION THAT COULD CAUSE DAMAGE TO THE APPLIANCE.
8.2 CREOSOTE FORMATION AND REMOVAL
84.1A
When wood is burned slowly, it produces tar and other organic vapors, which combine with expelled moisture
to form creosote. The creosote vapors condense in the relatively cooler chimney ue of a slow-burning re. As
a result, creosote residue accumulates on the ue lining. When ignited this creosote makes an extremely hot
re.
The chimney connector and chimney should be inspected at least once every two months during the heating
season to determine if a creosote buildup has occurred.
If creosote has accumulated it should be removed to reduce the risk of a chimney re.
Whenever the ashes in your fi rebox accumulate to a depth of 3 or 4
inches (76-102mm); they tend to burn themselves up. When the fi re has
burned down and cooled, remove any excess ashes but leave an ash bed
approximately 1 inch (25mm) deep on the fi rebox bottom to help maintain
a hot charcoal bed.
To use your ash pan, pull the ash dump handle forward, rotate
approximately 90° counterclockwise to the open position. Rake the excess
ashes into the ash pan. Close the ash well making sure that no coals or
foreign objects are preventing the ash plug or well door from closing. To
ensure that the ash well is fully closed, allow the door to snap shut.
This creates a fi re hazard that may result in a house/chimney fi re, internal damage to the appliance or
discoloration to the gold plated door (plated fi nishes are not covered by the warranty).
NOTE: ALWAYS ENSURE THE ASH PAN IS COMPLETELY COOL PRIOR TO REMOVING IT FROM THE
ASH DRAWER.
Remove the ash pan by lifting it up and to the left or right side of the ash drawer. Temporarily place the ash pan
on a non-combustible surface and close the ash pan lid. Remove the ash pan and safely dispose of the ashes.
Before reinstalling the ash pan ensure that the ash pan lid is OPEN. Place the ash pan into the pedestal.
NEVER OPERATE YOUR APPLIANCE WITH THE ASH WELL IN AN OPEN OR AJAR POSITION.
