The removable plates ARE dishwasher safe. The rest of the appliance wipes clean very easily. In fact the plates are so easy to keep clean, I seldom put them in the dishwasher.

From the very start I've always just put the in hot soapy water in a dish pan. I use Dawn. Within 10 minutes even the worst burnt on stuff just slides off. You may have taken some of the protective coating cleaning them in the dishwasher. I know they are suppose to be dishwasher safe, but I looked at my son's plates and decided to hand wash mine. of course! I've cooked frozen fish filets too. As the griddler gets older, it loses its nonstick capacity, so it's important to spray with nonstick coating before cooking.

You can control the temperature setting of the plates with the temperature dial. The top & bottom plates cook at the same temperature.
