Whynter ARC-122DHP Questions and Answers

#1 Does this unit have a defrost for the heat pump mode?

This item does have a temperature sensor on the coil to sense
freezing and shut off the compressor until defrosted.

#2 Does this unit shut off at desired temp and restart when it gets
above desired temp?

When the set temperature is reached, the compressor shuts off
but the fan runs continuously on low speed to circulate the air
in the room to maintain the set temperature and prevent the
compressor from running too frequently.

#3 I have a security gate. How much space do I need for the two
hoses to go out the window? I can only cut out so much.

The two window tubes are approximately 4 inches and 5
inches in diameter. They both terminate in a thin plastic
plate which is about six inches high and expands in length
from between 15 to 24 inches (or so). The plate is designed
to fit in the slot space below the opened window to seal
between the window frame and the sliding window part.
The tubes do not extend past the plane of the
window intself.

#4 How tall is it with the vents on top open? Total height in
inches? And are their casters that can be removed to make it
under 29inches tall?

With the vent open mine stands at 32inches tall. Unsure about
the removability of the casters, as mine is somewhat
permanently positioned/placed.

#5 In heat pump mode, can it also manage/maintain indoor
humidity automatically, or do you have to manually switch it
back and forth between modes?

In heat pump mode, the upper coils get hot to keep the heat
in the room (and the lower section gets cold to send cold
air out the window). While in AC mode or "Dehumidify", the
upper coils get cold to cool the room air (with the cold
attracting the moisture to produce condensation and thus
"dehumidify") and the lower coils are hot. You
can't "Dehumidify" in heat mode since you're indirectly
saying "I want the upper coils hot (for heating) and cold (for
dehumidifying) at the same time" which is impossible. So if
you really must do both, you'll need to switch modes every
few hours or such.
Note, to do effective "Dehumidifying" you MUST drain water
from the top port constantly. If you don't drain it from the
top port, then water drains onto the hot coils below,
evaporates, and goes right back into the room (since you
don't vent hot air in "Dehumidify' mode).
So manually draining from the top port is the only way to
divert the water somewhere else besides the air.
