There should be 2 power switches on right back side of machine. One is for power of machine and the other is for the brush.

The canister is washable and once you remove the filter the insert that makes it a tunnel is washable. I have used a shop vac or air hose from an air compressor to clean the filter because I don't know how well it would work once it was actually soaked in water. The filter is easily removed from the canister. I was more concerned with cleaning the plastic "funnel" shaped insert because that area holds a lot of the dust. This is a strong vacuum cleaner and we laugh here at our house because the vinyl floor is a little tough to vacuum because it is so powerful. We mostly have wood floors so it is awesome with only vinyl in bathrooms and laundry room. Once you learn to use the handle and on board extension hose as well as the tools you will be amazed at this vacuum cleaner, especially at the price
