Use

Power cord

Unwind the cord completely to aid the vacuum in dissipating heat.

Do not pull or carry by the cord, use the cord as a handle, close a door on the cord, or pull the cord around sharp edges or corners. Do not run the appliance over the cord. Keep the cord away from heated surfaces.

Do not unplug by pulling the cord. To unplug grasp the plug, not the cord.

This appliance is equipped with a power cord reel. Hold the plug when rewinding onto cord reel. Do not allow plug to whip when rewinding.

Unwinding (see fig. 17)

  • Pull the cord out to the required length.
  • Plug the power plug into the electrical outlet.

Depending on the model, the lighting of the Park-System on both sides of the vacuum cleaner switches on.

The first time the vacuum cleaner is used, the lighting turns on after approx. two minutes.

If you intend to use the vacuum cleaner for more than 30 minutes, you will need to pull the cord all the way out. This is to help prevent overheating and damage to the appliance.

Rewinding (see fig. 18)

  • Unplug the power plug from the electrical outlet.

If your vacuum cleaner is equipped with an illuminated Park-System, the lighting switches off again automatically approx. 30 seconds after disconnecting the power.

  • Tap the rewind foot switch and the power cord will rewind automatically.

Turn the vacuum cleaner on and off see fig. 19)

  • Press the On/Off foot switch

The Standby indicator on the display panel of the vacuum cleaner and the LED on the Comfort handpiece light yellow.

  • By pressing the Standby button on the Comfort handpiece (see fig. 21) the next time the vacuum is used it will turn on to the last selected power level.

Selecting the suction power

You can adjust the suction power to suit the situation. When you reduce the suction power, the floorhead can be moved with less effort.

On the Comfort handpiece you will see various symbols that show examples of which power level is recommended for which purpose.

The selected power level lights yellow.

curtains, lightweight fabrics
upholstery, pillows
thick pile carpets, rugs and runners
Automatic adjustment of the suction power to the floor covering

Energy-efficient everyday vacuuming, low noise
Low pile carpets
Hard flooring and intensive cleaning of carpets
  • To select a higher power setting, press the + button on the Comfort handpiece (see fig. 20).
  • To select a lower power setting, press the - button on the Comfort handpiece.

While vacuuming (see fig. 22)

The vacuum cleaner can also stand on its end for vacuuming stairs, drapes etc.

To prevent static electricity your hand must touch the metal inlay on the underside of the vacuum handpiece. Be certain to continuously touch this inlay when vacuuming fine dust, flour or sawdust as these materials are more likely to create a static electricity. To further prevent static discharge while vacuuming, pull the vacuum along by the hose with one hand while continuing to hold the handpiece in the other hand.

Turning the Powerbrush ON and OFF see fig. 23)

The Powerbrush is turned on and off separately from the vacuum cleaner

  • by pressing the On/Off button on the Comfort handpiece.

You can interrupt operation for short pauses during vacuuming

  • by pressing the Standby button on the Comfort handpiece.

The LED on the Comfort handpiece lights.

Do not leave the vacuum cleaner in Standby mode, only use it for short pauses during vacuuming.

This is to help prevent overheating and damage to the appliance.

Parking, transport and storage

Park-System (see fig. 24)

(not for use with the Powerbrushes SEB 228 / EB03 or SEB 236 / EB01)

The Park-System allows you to park the telescopic wand and the suction unit on the vacuum cleaner during brief pauses.

  • Insert the parking clip attachment on the suction unit into the parking slot from above.

If the vacuum cleaner is on an incline, e.g. a ramp, slide the tube into the telescopic wand all the way.

Turning on and off with the Park-System

The vacuum cleaner is automatically turned off if you insert the suction unit with the parking slot into the Park-System.

Park-System for storage (see fig. 25)

Turn the vacuum cleaner off after use. Remove the plug from the electrical outlet.

After approx. 30 seconds the parking system lighting turns off if your vacuum cleaner is equipped with an illuminated Park-System.

  • Stand the vacuum cleaner vertically.

It is helpful to completely insert the tubes into the telescopic wand.

  • Insert the parking clip attachment on the suction unit into either side of the

Park-System from above (cannot be used with Powerbrush SEB 228 / EB03 or SEB 236 / EB01).

This makes the vacuum cleaner easier to carry and store.

Maintenance and care

Turn off and unplug the vacuum cleaner before performing any maintenance work.

The Miele filter system consists of the following three components.

  • Filter bag
  • Exhaust filter
  • Dust compartment filter

Each of these components must be changed periodically to maintain the vacuum cleaner’s efficiency.

Only use Miele filter bags, filters and accessories with the "Original Miele" logo. Only then can the suction power of the vacuum cleaner reach its optimum potential creating the best possible cleaning results.

The use of filter bags made of paper or a similar material, or filter bags with a cardboard retaining plate can lead to serious damage to the vacuum cleaner and possibly voiding the warranty, just as with the use of filter bags without the Original Miele" logo.

Purchasing new filter bags and filters

Original Miele filter bags and filters can be purchased from an authorized Miele vacuum dealer or by visiting the Miele online store.

Which filter bags and filters are the right ones?

This vacuum cleaner uses Original

Miele filter bags Type G/N and an Original Miele filters, the "Original Miele" Logo will appear on the packaging or directly on the filter bag.

An "AirClean" exhaust filter and a dust compartment filter are supplied with every box of Miele filter bags.

If you would like to purchase additional Miele filters separately, contact your vacuum dealer or Miele, please quote the model number of your Miele vacuum cleaner to ensure correct parts are ordered. These parts are also available to order from the online Miele store.

The exhaust filter supplied with the vacuum cleaner can be exchanged with another type of Original Miele filter see "Exchanging exhaust filters").

When to change the filter bag (see fig. 26)

Change the filter bag when the colored marker in the airflow indicator completely fills the display in red.

Filter bags are disposable articles and made to be used only once.

Dispose of full filter bags. Do not attempt to reuse.

Clogged pores reduce the suction power of the vacuum cleaner.

Check the airflow indicator

  • Attach the reversible floorhead depending on model) to the vacuum cleaner. All other suction tools can affect the function of the airflow indicator.
  • Use the On/ Off foot switch to switch the vacuum cleaner on, then select the highest suction setting.
  • Slightly lift the reversible floorhead from the floor. If the color marker completely fills the indicator window, the filter bag needs to be changed.

How the airflow indicator works

The airflow indicator is designed to show when the bag is full of common household dust and measures the amount of air flow through the filter bag.

Normal household dust is a mixture of dust, hair, carpet fluff, threads, sand, etc.

However, if fine dust, such as drill dust, sand, plaster or flour is vacuumed, the pores of the filter bag may become blocked. The marker will indicate that the bag is "full" even when it is not. The filter bag should be changed as the suction power is greatly reduced.

If the bag is bulging with pet fur, hair, carpet fluff, etc. the indicator may not register "full". This is because the air flow of the filter bag may still be high enough not to activate the marker to show maximum. The filter bag should still be changed.

How to change the filter bag (see fig.

  • Lift the release button and open the dust compartment lid upwards until it clicks into place (see fig. 9).

The filter bag has a flap that automatically closes to prevent dust from escaping when the bag is removed.

  • Grasp the finger grip and pull the filter bag out of the holder.
  • Insert the new filter bag into the blue holder as far as it will go. Note: Do NOT unfold the filter bag when you first remove it from the box.
  • Wait until you have inserted the filter bag into the compartment before unfolding it.
  • Now close the dust compartment lid until it clicks into place, taking care not to catch the filter bag in the lid.

If you do not insert a replacement filter bag, the dust compartment lid is designed not to close. Do not use force!

When should I change the dust compartment filter?

Whenever you start a new box of Miele filter bag filters, you should change the dust compartment filter. A new dust compartment filter is included in every box of Miele filter bags.

Replacing the dust compartment filter (see fig. 29)

  • Open the dust compartment lid.
  • Grasp the finger grip and pull the filter bag out of the holder.
  • Open the blue filter frame until it clicks into place, use the clean corner to remove the dust compartment filter.
  • Insert a new dust compartment filter.
  • Close the filter frame.
  • Insert the new filter bag as far as it will go into the blue holder.
  • Close the dust compartment lid until it clicks into place.

When to change the exhaust filter?

Depending on the model, your vacuum cleaner will use one of the following standard exhaust filters (see fig. 8):

a AirClean Filter

Change the exhaust filter each time you open a new box of Miele filter bags.

A new AirClean exhaust filter is included in every box of Miele filter bags.

b Active AirClean 50 (black)

c HEPA AirClean 50 (white)

If the display of the exhaust filter change indicator has turned fully red see fig. 13).

The indicator light will come on after approx. 50 hours of operation, which is equivalent to one year of average use.

The vacuum cleaner can still be used however, the filter performance and suction power will be reduced.

Instead of the Active AirClean 50 b or HEPA AirClean 50 c exhaust filter installed as standard, an AirClean a exhaust filter can also be used (see section Maintenance and care - Exchanging exhaust filters").

How to replace the AirClean exhaust filter? (see fig. 30 + 31)

Make sure that only one exhaust filter is inserted in the frame.

  • Open the dust compartment lid.
  • Squeeze the release for the filter frame and open until it clicks.
  • Grasp one of the two clean corners see arrow) to remove the used AirClean exhaust filter.
  • Insert a new AirClean exhaust filter.

But if you want to install an Active AirClean 50 filter or HEPA AirClean 50 filter, you must heed the section Maintenance and care - Exchanging exhaust filters".

  • Close the filter frame.
  • Close the dust compartment lid until it clicks into place.

How do I change the Active AirClean or the HEPA AirClean 50 exhaust filter? (see fig. 32 + 33)

Make sure that only one exhaust filter is inserted in the frame.

  • Open the dust compartment lid.
  • Lift the Active AirClean 50 or HEPA
  • AirClean 50 exhaust filter and remove it.
  • Install the new Active AirClean 50 or HEPA AirClean 50 exhaust filter and press it downwards.
  • Press the exhaust filter change indicator (see fig. 11).
  • After about 10-15 seconds, a small red marker will appear in the left-hand side of the display (see fig. 12).

If you want to install an AirClean exhaust filter, you must adhere to the section "Maintenance and care - Exchanging exhaust filters".

  • Close the dust compartment lid until it clicks into place.

Important

  1. If you replace exhaust filter a with exhaust filter b or c, you must be sure to remove the filter frame before inserting the new filter type. The exhaust filter change indicator must also be activated (see fig. 11).
  2. If you replace exhaust filter b or c with exhaust filter a, you must be sure to place the new filter in the filter frame
    • (see fig. 31).
    • Filter frame - see section on "Optional accessories"

Service indicator with reset button see fig. 34)

The indicator light will come on after approx. 50 hours of operation, which is equivalent to one year of average use.

Check if the motor protection filter and the exhaust filters need to be replaced as well. You will need to reset the indicator after replacing any of these components.

To do this, the vacuum cleaner must be turned on.

  • Press the reset button.

The service indicator will go out and be reset to its original position.

The reset feature only works properly if the indicator light has already come on, but not if the reset button is pressed in between filter changes.

When to change the thread catcher of the reversible floorhead depending on model)

The thread catcher on the floorhead can be replaced when the pile is worn out.

Replacing the thread catchers (see fig. 36)

  • Use a screwdriver or similar object to remove the thread catchers from the slots.
  • Insert the new thread catchers.

New thread catcher pads can be purchased from any authorized Miele vacuum dealer or Miele.

Cleaning and care

Turn off the vacuum and unplug it from the outlet before performing any maintenance work.

Vacuum cleaner and accessories

The vacuum cleaner and other plastic accessories can be cleaned with a damp cloth or a cleaner suitable for plastics.

Do not use abrasive, oil-based, glass or all purpose cleaners!

Dust compartment

The dust compartment can, if necessary, be cleaned using a dry cloth, dusting brush or a second vacuum to remove any dust.

Monitor the filter bag change indicator and inspect all filters regularly. Clean or replace them when necessary according to these Operating Instructions.

Do not submerge the vacuum in water. If moisture gets into the appliance there is the risk of an electric shock.

Frequently asked questions

The vacuum cleaner shuts off automatically.

A warning light comes on to indicate overheating.

A temperature sensor will turn off the vacuum cleaner if it becomes too warm.

This is indicated by a thermal protection indicator on the display panel of the vacuum.

This problem can occur if, for example, an object is blocking the suction hose or the filter bag pores have become clogged with fine dust. The cause could also be a heavily soiled exhaust or dust compartment filter. If this happens, turn off the vacuum cleaner press the On/Off foot switch ) and unplug the power plug from the electrical outlet.

Once the cause has been addressed, allow the vacuum cleaner to cool for approx. 20 - 30 minutes before resuming vacuuming.
