Using Copilot in Microsoft Edge as an AI Assistant for Reading Manuals and Documents

- By David

Quick summary

  • Edge ships with Copilot in the sidebar — no extension required, just sign in with a Microsoft account.
  • Turn on Copilot Vision in Settings so Copilot can "see" the manual page you have open and answer using its actual context.
  • Find your manual on ManualsFile using brand + model number, open the document, then ask Copilot directly: installation steps, specifications, troubleshooting, replacement parts…

1. What is Edge? What is Copilot? How to install Edge and enable Copilot

What is Microsoft Edge?

Microsoft Edge is a web browser developed by Microsoft. It comes preinstalled on Windows 10/11 and is also available on macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. Built on the Chromium engine, Edge is compatible with almost every website and includes handy built-in tools: read aloud, page translation, reading mode, a PDF viewer, and — most importantly — Copilot right inside the interface.

What is Copilot?

Copilot is Microsoft's AI assistant (built on GPT models). It can read and understand text, summarize, translate, explain, and answer questions. Inside Edge, Copilot works as a sidebar next to the page you're viewing — so you don't have to copy content into another tool.

With Copilot Vision, Copilot can "see" the content of the open page (including PDFs and long manual pages) and answer based on that exact content. That's why using Edge Copilot for document lookup is such an effective workflow for technical docs, user manuals, and datasheets.

How to install Edge

  1. Go to Microsoft's official download page and get the version for your operating system.
  2. Install it → open Edge → sign in with a Microsoft account (required for full Copilot features).
  3. Open the … menu → Help and feedback → About Microsoft Edge to update to the latest version.

How to enable Copilot in Edge

  • Click the Copilot icon on the right side of the toolbar, or press Ctrl + Shift + . (period).
  • If you don't see the icon: go to Settings → Sidebar → Copilot and turn it on.
  • Sign in with your Microsoft account to use the full version (free).

Note: Menus and labels may vary by Edge version and region. If you can't find a setting as described, update Edge to the latest version first.

2. How to use Copilot on ManualsFile

Step 1 – Adjust Copilot settings: enable Copilot Vision

This is the most important step — it determines whether Copilot can actually read the document you have open.

  1. Open the Copilot sidebar in Edge (Ctrl + Shift + .).
  2. Click the Settings icon (or the … / More options menu) inside the Copilot panel.
  3. Select Vision.
  4. Turn on "Allow Copilot Vision to see your webpages."
  5. Confirm the page permission when Copilot prompts you.

Once enabled, every time you open a manual page, Copilot can read that page's content to answer instead of giving generic replies.

Tip: If Vision doesn't appear, check that you're signed in with a Microsoft account, that Edge is up to date, and try closing and reopening the Copilot sidebar.

Step 2 – Go to ManualsFile.com

Open a new tab and head to ManualsFile.com — a library of user manuals covering a huge range of brands and product lines: home appliances, electronics, machinery, industrial equipment, vehicles, toys, and more.

Here's a sample document page you can use to practice right away: https://manualsfile.com/product/k6b32203cb9b.html

Step 3 – Find the manual using brand + model number

This is the fastest and most accurate way to search:

  1. Find the model number on the product label, the box, or the old manual (usually on the back or bottom of the device).
  2. Enter it in the search box using this format: [brand] + [model].

Example searches:

  • Panasonic NN-ST34NB
  • Sharp KC-G50
  • Roborock S7 MaxV

Quick search tips:

  • The model number alone is often precise enough — no need to type the full product name.
  • If you get no results, try removing extra characters like / or -, or search by brand + product line.
  • For older products, add the manufacturing year to filter the correct manual version.

Step 4 – Open the document and scroll through it

Click a result to open the document page. Manuals are usually displayed as an embedded PDF/page viewer right on the website.

  • Scroll down so the document fully loads — many viewers only render pages as you scroll.
  • Make sure you're looking at the correct version/model (check the cover page).
  • If the document has a table of contents, note the page numbers for the sections you need (Installation, Specifications, Troubleshooting).

Step 5 – Use Copilot to ask about the document

Keep the manual tab open, open the Copilot sidebar, and start asking. Below is a set of sample prompts by scenario:

a) Get a quick overview

"What product and model is this manual for? Summarize it in 5 bullet points."

"List the main table of contents of this document with page numbers."

b) Installation & usage

"Walk me through installing this device step by step based on the manual. Present it as a numbered list."

"What are the basic daily usage steps? Keep it short for a beginner."

"What spacing or installation specs does the manual require (voltage, ventilation clearance, temperature)?"

c) Specifications

"Extract the technical specifications table from the manual: power, voltage, dimensions, weight."

"What parts or components does this model use? List part numbers if they're in the manual."

d) Troubleshooting

"What does the manual recommend when the device won't power on? List the checks in order."

"What does error code E3 mean in this manual, and how do I fix it?"

e) Maintenance & cleaning

"What's the recommended maintenance schedule and cleaning procedure according to the manual?"

f) Translating a foreign-language manual

"Translate the 'Installation' section into English, keeping technical terms and page numbers intact."

Tips for effective prompts:

  • State the context + goal + desired format. Example: "I'm a regular user installing this for the first time. Summarize the 6 installation steps as a list, one sentence each."
  • Ask for citations: "Tell me which page/section this information comes from." — this makes it easy to verify.
  • Ask one thing at a time instead of one overly broad question; the answers will be more accurate.
  • Follow up to go deeper: "Explain step 3 in simpler terms, with an example."

Step 6 – Describe your problem and let Copilot find it in the manual

Instead of asking by section, you can describe the symptom or your real-world need and let Copilot hunt down the relevant part of the manual:

"The unit runs but doesn't cool — what does this manual say to check? Point me to the relevant troubleshooting section."

"I need to replace the filter cartridge. What part number does the manual mention, and what's the replacement procedure?"

"The device has been unusually loud after 2 years of use. Does the manual have a section on noise?"

"I want to connect the device to my phone. Does the manual cover this, and on which page?"

This approach is especially useful when you don't know the technical terms — just describe what's happening in plain language.

Step 7 – Verify and save the information

  • Cross-check the answer against the original document before acting on it, especially for anything involving electricity, gas, or water.
  • If Copilot's answer seems off, ask a more specific follow-up or request "quote the exact passage from the manual."
  • Save it: copy the answer into your notes, take a screenshot, or bookmark the manual page for next time.

3. Things to keep in mind when using Copilot for document lookup

  • AI can be wrong. Always verify against the original document, especially for safety specs and installation instructions.
  • Blurry or low-quality scanned documents, or handwritten pages, may cause Copilot to misread or miss content.
  • Some documents require login or access rights to view; Copilot can only read content visible on the page.
  • Copilot Vision must be enabled first — if you skip this, answers will be generic rather than grounded in the manual.
  • Don't share confidential or internal documents on public pages and then ask AI to process them.

4. Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

Can Copilot read PDF files?

Yes. If you open a PDF in Edge's built-in PDF viewer and enable Copilot Vision, Copilot can read the content of the displayed PDF pages. For PDFs downloaded to your device, just open them directly in Edge and ask Copilot.

Do I need a Microsoft account?

Yes. You need to sign in with a Microsoft account to use Copilot in Edge with full features.

Can Copilot translate an English manual into another language?

Yes. You can ask it to translate section by section, while keeping technical terms and page numbers intact for easy cross-referencing.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. Edge and Copilot both have mobile versions (iOS/Android), but reading long documents and enabling Copilot Vision is generally more convenient on a desktop or laptop.

What if I can't find the manual on ManualsFile?

Try again with just the model number, remove special characters, or search by brand + product line. If it's still missing, try model variants (with or without regional suffixes like -VN, -EU).
